I read the entire 33-issue series of Fairest over two days last week. As a companion to Fables, I enjoyed it, but I do regret not getting it while the main series was actively being published. The storylines in this series focused on various female characters, such as Cinderella and Rapunzel, who were not part of the core of the main title, and told subplot tales that would have proven more interesting and impactful had they been read in conjunction with the main book. Not bad overall, and certainly worth picking up if one is a fan of the primary title.

Read Descender Vol. 4. Great stuff, but arrggh cliffhanger endings and now the interminable wait for volume 5. The art in this volume was absolutely gorgeous. It's been phenomenal all along, but it feels like Nguyen kicked it up a notch this volume, and the story too kicked it up another notch in this volume. Can I just say I want the cover to #21 as a print minus the trade dress...  I just love that piece of art. -M |

Certainly the story where they claim the convertible ties in (that shows up in the main book).. and the Prince Charming stuff is quite relevant. I think maybe there's a Beauty one? The Rapunzel was kinda out of continuity, IIRC. |

The first two issues of Titan's new Robotech are out, story by Brian Wood with art by Marco Turini. If you're brand new to the franchise, then this is a decent introduction as Wood starts out with the re-telling of the Macross Saga portion. However, if you are a long-time fan, Wood introduces some changes into the story. Most characters have been re-designed which has been nice, these characters have always been seen in their anime versions so a change like this is interesting. Some relationship dynamics have been altered such as between Roy Fokker and Rick Hunter and even Rick and Lynn Minmei who here looks slightly older and whose personality and attitude are not as ditzy as before. These along with hints of new secrets and intrigue have me intrigued as to where this new re-telling is heading.
Invincible Iron Man...I continue my love/aggravation relationship with this title. Bendis has some good moments with Riri in #9-10 but they are covered by his usual irritating writing quirks, as if it's hard to see the good trees for the dark forest they are within. But reading the letters page softens this somewhat as many new young fans write to voice their love and appreciation for Riri (along with Miles and Sam Alexander). That's always a good thing but still, need to read Riri under another writer to see. She recently guest-starred in Champions so I want to see how well Waid handles her.

Finished the trade of Tom King's Omega Men series. Took me a few sittings to get through all 12 issues. I had my doubts as I read it, it started strong, kind of lulled a little bit in the middle, but it all came together in the end. I liked the use of Vandalized propaganda posters for the covers of each issue, thematically it fit and pulled each issue together. Some of the characters could have been more fully developed, some of the characterizations felt a little one note, kind of painted with a broad brush like the propaganda posters used for the covers, but others were much more nuanced and handled well. Overall I liked it (much better than I liked his Batman, but maybe not quite as much as I enjoyed his Grayson stuff), but I am not sure it quite lived up to all the hyperbole over it I saw when it was coming out-but then maybe the hyperbole just set unrealistic expectations for me, I'm not sure so it's a bit of a catch-22 or even chicken and egg thing. The art was very stylized. I liked it, bit those who don't like modern comic are are probably not going to groove to it. It's colored directly from the pencils for most of the run and the coloring plays an important part in setting the mood and driving home some of the thematic underpinnings of the series.
A few more things to get through this weekend before I go into output mode writing rather than input mode reading, but I am glad I got to this one.

Yeah, looks like it could be all inside Scott Free's mind or possibly a result of Darkseid's manipulation if he really has the Anti-Life equation. But the overall impression is that it doesn't take place in the usual "reality" of the characters. |

A few more things to get through this weekend before I go into output mode writing rather than input mode reading, but I am glad I got to this one. -M The middle was a bit uneven but over I thought it was a solid book, definitely one of my favorite books put out by DC recently; I also really liked the Deadman book that came out around the same time. As for my recent readings, I really loved the first issue of The Realm by Seth Peck over at Image. It's a great sci-fi/ high fantasy romp that looks like it has a lot of potential. |

As for my recent readings, I really loved the first issue of The Realm by Seth Peck over at Image. It's a great sci-fi/ high fantasy romp that looks like it has a lot of potential. I wanted to pick that up when I was at the shop yesterday, but some speculator dude came in and bought up every shelf copy they had as soon as they opened on Wednesday. -M That is so lame. You should track it down though as it was fun, the lead character immediately drew me in and I already love the world. As a tease for how fun the mash up is, the King that we see has the title seemingly because he controls {Spoiler: Click to show}

With Image stuff I usually check out the first issue then decide if I am going to get the trade, so I'll just wait for the trade now unless I stumble on a copy. I did it with Seven to Eternity and wound up flipping my #1 for a decent amount of trade credit, so I get why people are snagging copies, but yeah, it's disappointing to try to pick up a book a day after it comes out to find zero copies, especially when the shop ordered heavy on it too and Diamond is sold out (it's supposed to go back to press for a 2nd print available when #2 hits).

I recently got caught up with Francavilla's take on the Spirit and it's pretty great so far. The dialogue is a bit clunky at times but really the draw for me is the art and it's absolutely stunning. |

I read The Island #1, the first issue of Brandon Grahmam and Emma Rios' anthology mag from Image. There's some interesting stuff going on, but a lot of it is freeform almost stream of consciousness cartooning, but it is a fascinating read. Not sure if I like it, but it certainly challenges my norms and pushes boundaries. I really dug Emma Rios' piece in there, and the skateboarding saga was very well done and would have been more interesting to me if I were into skater culture at all. I will certainly check out more of the issues if I can find them, but no one seemed to carry shelf copies around here when it was coming out, so there hard to come by it seems.

Read Tales of Mister Rhee Vol. 1 last night. Good stuff. In the realm of a Hellblazer or Dresden Files, but with it's own voice and identity. The volume contains thirteen 8 page stories, each stands on its own, but when woven together they make a larger tapestry of a story, which takes a certain level or skill. No decompression here, that's for certain.
Dirk just previewed the cover to volume 4 today, with a Ben Templesmith cover, The kickstarter for it goes live on Friday Oct 13. I need to pick up volumes 2 and 3 before then.
