I liked the first Velvet trade, but somehow it didn't inspire me to get the next one. I do like Brubaker, but there's a certain.. I don't know... sameness to all his stuff (beyond genre) that just doesn't quite do it for me.
I was super disappointed in the Bond comic by Ellis, that should have been a slam dunk... I loved his early stuff, but since Transmet it's just too far out there for me.

Thinking i need to check out the 2nd trade at a comic shop for a glance through if there is anything there to convince me for continuing. True enough that Bond by Ellis should have been a knock out of the ballpark. But it was missing something for me. At least i have my Grell Bond!

You know, I'm not usually one of those 'Bendis is terrible' people, but god, he's terrible. Iron Man 11 ended with him seeing Riri Williams flying around in an Iron Man suit... Iron Man 12 spends 1/2 the issue having him find out about her, oh, and discussing a company that didn't exist until Bendis needed it to. I guess the idea is #12 takes place before the LAST PAGE of #11 (which had no purpose whatsoever other than so they could say the 'new Iron Man' was in the issue).. which is remarkably dumb. Also, Apparently in between issues Tony did alot of stuff in other books that aren't mentioned in any way.
Meanwhile, International Iron Man now is going to be a flashback about Tony's new parents, who are, of course, SHIELD agents. I'm pissed I fell for a damn Bait and Switch. If Bendis wanted to write a spy story set in the 80s, awesome... I'm in. Shoehorn it in to Iron Man for no reason? Forget it.

He went back to the well one too many times there. End Of Days was awful.

In tune with the days topic of diversive creators, I've just reread The Manhattan Projects by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra, and I unreservedly love it. Dont care what I read about Hickman, this is so clever you could pin a tale on it and call it a rat.
" $#@& your science Doctor... I've got a machine gun." (Issue 17) my favourite quote...today.

The only Hickman I've read that was beyond medicore was his FF, and even on that he failed to have an ending. Granted I haven't actually read Manhattan Projects, but East of West is terrible.
I did like Powers alot, though it went on a little too long IMO.

East Of West didn't click for me the first time I read vol 1, but I gave it another go and now I'm really digging it.

I'm enjoying East of West the most of all the Hickman's things I've read (and I generally like Hickman's work a lot).

Just read the fantasy series from Dark Horse and writer Dan Abnett, Dark Ages. I enjoyed the premise and setting quite a lot, and while the plot and action weren't too complex, the themes of faith and salvation were intriguing.

I liked it too.. there's definitely more that could have been done with it. Along that vein, you should check out Wilds End... also by Abnett. It's essentially a mix of Wind and the Willows and War of the Worlds, which somehow works really well. There are two minis, which I assume are out there in trades. I read Adventures of the Rifle Brigade last night... good stuff.. sort like the Section 8 of War Stories. The internet tells me Ezquerra did alot of Judge Dredd stuff... I really gotta get some of that older stuff at some point.
