Yeah, this was an improvement over his previous story(to which this one is kind of a sequel), in #335. I believe this was the last time he appeared in Pre-Crisis SUPERMAN, at least as the main 'bad guy'. He appeared one last time in Superman #421 (his last appearance before Whatever Happened). I read this story while I was reading the last Superman's stories before Byrne's reboot. Probably the best part of it is just the cover. Here Mxyzptlk decides to become "good" for some nebulous reasons and never to bother Superman again. If it was thought as a "last Mxyzptlk's story", well, it was quite disappointing. Mike's site says his next appearance was in DC Comics Presents #97, but I never read it. Aside from some great Curt Swan art there isn't much to recommend this issue. It is however, interesting to see the characters dressed in 1986 fashions when Mxyzptlk (or the other imp who Mxyzptlk is trying to stop) gives them extreme make overs. DC Comics Presents 97 was just a mean spirited close out to the Silver Age. I have a similar problem with Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, but that one, at least, was out of continuity. Steve Gerber's story was not. Mxyzptlk destroys a city as revenge for imprisoning him, uses a severed Bizarro head to announce his arrival in Metropolis, sends the remains of Argo City (which is now a giant meteor of kryptonite) hurtling towards Metropolis which results in thousands of corpses raining down on the city, and promises to never return to bother Superman again since his trimuph was so complete and devastating. What fun!
