[I just noticed that Julie Shwartz is on the cover. I guess he's the only creator responsible for Superman before 1986. No, but those issues marked the end of his long tenure as editor of the Superman titles and were the last books he did before retiring from comics/DC, so they were honoring him in particular. -M Also, Julie Schwartz reputedly greased the wheels for the conclusion of the "Old Superman." Yet, since the story is a sendoff for that character and his mythology, the real architect was properly Mort Weisinger-- apparently a demon as an editor, though he got the best Superman stories out of Jerry Siegel, IMO. One of the best Mxyzptlk stories of the 1960s: Mxy gets supernatural lockjaw, so Superman must find some way to make him pronounce his name backward even though the imp literally cannot speak.

World's Finest 133 "Bat-Mite Meets Mr. Mxyzptlk!" There's something very Dali-esque about seeing Mxyzptlk transform dandelions, pussy willows, dogwood into giant flowers with their barking, growling, meowing animal counterparts serving as their heads. Superman uprooting them and taking them away but not stating where, makes me wonder if there isn't some giant cornfield in the DC Universe with all sorts of horrible Mxyzptlk creations roaming around. Plus, it's Bat-Mite vs Mxyzptlk getting Superman to mop up the syrup infested streets of Gotham with his hair while Batman and Robin have to cope with literally being tossed at a giant flame spewing, hairy Cyclops/Octopus.

Superman 150 "When the World Forgot Superman!" Mxyzptlk does what you'd think from reading the title - erases everyone's memory and knowledge of Superman. Forced to prove that he isn't some nut seeking attention, Superman attempts to use his powers in public only to have Mxzyptlk use his magic to come up with some rational explanation for what he's doing.

Superman 135 "The Trio of Steel!" Grinning and cackling like a maniac, Superman evaporates the water in a kid's swimming pond, melts the ice on a skating rink, shows up at a party honoring Perry White only to force him to dress up as a giant rabbit, clown, and hobo respectively as he photographs the event for posterity, and is on the verge of proposing to Lois Lane only to burst out laughing in her face. Arriving atop a secluded mountaintop at a predetermined time, Superman demands that Mxyzptlk explain what he's done to him. Revealing that he's been hypnotized in retaliation for all the times Superman's made a fool out of him, Mxyzptlk tells Superman that he'll voluntarily leave Earth only if Superman gives him one of his Superman robots. Superman agrees and offers him a choice of either a Superman, Superboy, or Superbaby robot. All three have however, been rigged to pester Mxyzptlk and it's the Superbaby robot that tricks him into saying his name backwards.

One of the best Mxyzptlk stories of the 1960s: Mxy gets supernatural lockjaw, so Superman must find some way to make him pronounce his name backward even though the imp literally cannot speak. That's the first one that popped into my mind when I started thinking of great Mxyzptlk stories. I think I have it reprinted in a 100-Page Super-Spectacular issue of Superman Family.
Also, that story in World's Finest where Superman loses his powers and Batman loses his fortune and they are living like bums in the Bat-Mobile (which has a flat tire) and it's all part of the Batgirl/Supergirl conspiracy!
And in the 1980s (or maybe the early 1990s) there was The Kase of the Krimson Kryptonite! I always liked that one.

I've never seen anyone happier to get lockjaw in their life. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Ah, glad someone mentioned this WF issue (which we discussed touched upon recently in the What Classic Comics Have You Purchased Lately thread). As I mentioend there, this is one of my fave issues from back then. Heck, as an adult I still think it's a fun issue!

Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. Also, the Gibert Gottfried-voiced Mxyzptlk in Superman: The Animated Series provided some great stories.
In the vain of Superman :TAS there is Superman Adventures #36 by Mark Millar which is really fun He's had several good stories in that series.

I am very fond of "The Turnabout Trap!" in Superman #349, although this is not revealed as a Mr Mxyzptlk tale until quite late in the story. Definitely a fun read.

Yeah, this was an improvement over his previous story(to which this one is kind of a sequel), in #335. I believe this was the last time he appeared in Pre-Crisis SUPERMAN, at least as the main 'bad guy'.

I picked up a copy of Action Comics 291 this weekend and while I can't really rank it as one of the "best" Mxyzptlk storylines out there, it did strike me as unusual in that it established that Mxyzptlk is capable of bringing the dead back to life. And no, there is no 11th hour revelation that these are merely facsimiles of her parents - they are Kara's real parents. It's a nice little story with its strength stemming from Supergirl's foster parents struggling with the fact that though they love their daughter, she must now go live with Zor-El and Allura who soon begin acting cold and strange to their daughter all as a ploy to get rid of Mxyzptlk even though their success results in the erasure of all the magic the imp performed while on Earth, including, yes, their return from the grave. The only reason I don't rate it higher is because it's more of a Supergirl tale than a Mxyzptlk one.

World's Funnest was a hoot, although I mainly dislike the character.
I will give a shout-out to the first Bizarro collection from DC, which had a framing story featuring Mxyzptlk. For the most part, I found the framing story unfunny and actually sort of insulting, but the opening page summarizes every single Superman/Mxyzptlk interaction as seen from Mxyzptlk's point of view in a way I found is completely brilliant.

Yeah, this was an improvement over his previous story(to which this one is kind of a sequel), in #335. I believe this was the last time he appeared in Pre-Crisis SUPERMAN, at least as the main 'bad guy'. He appeared one last time in Superman #421 (his last appearance before Whatever Happened). I read this story while I was reading the last Superman's stories before Byrne's reboot. Probably the best part of it is just the cover. Here Mxyzptlk decides to become "good" for some nebulous reasons and never to bother Superman again. If it was thought as a "last Mxyzptlk's story", well, it was quite disappointing. Mike's site says his next appearance was in DC Comics Presents #97, but I never read it.
