Here's Ozymandias' proboards frontpage: spidermanforum.comIn addition to being an example of how to do a frontpage with proboards, I really like the overall look of his site. I'm not a webdesigner, so I'm always open to help with the look of this site as well. Back to the whole issue of whether to host the frontpage through proboards, one advantage of using a different site is that it essentially doubles our exposure to search engines. Also, if proboards goes down, we still have a frontpage that can update members on what's happening, and vice versa should the frontpage go down but the forum remain up. Thx, I guess you're right about the advantages of outsourcing the homepage, but I just went for the quick solution here. I'll keep an eye on how you sort that out.

I don't think having the site on two different servers necessarily helps with search results. What probably *would* help is getting a proper domain name. But you can have a domain name like just redirect to whatever front page (proboards or otherwise) you set up. The chief advantage of doing the front page through proboards would be that it could dynamically update the front page with content pulled from the forum threads, with no additional effort beyond simply posting something to the forum.

Of course, those domain names cost money, so unless someone has a brilliant ad revenue generating plan for the frontpage (and I'm really not sure I'd want to get involved in running this place like a business), domain name isn't really an option. PMed you.

Godaddy is selling domain names right now for .99 for the 1st year, if that helps

Godaddy is selling domain names right now for .99 for the 1st year, if that helps Godaddy is certainly easy, but I'd avoid them if possible. Maybe they've changed, but the stories I heard were that once they have your domain it's not easy to get it back. In theory, yes, in practice, not so much. Plus they were famous for domain parking (where if you search for a domain using their site they reserve it themselves so you cannot get it unless you go to them), and other crimes. More ethical hosts don't do that. If you already have webspace then a .com is only about ten dollars a year, and other URLs (e.g. .co.uk) are much less. I use Dreamhost and it's really easy to add another domain to my space.

Yeah, getting a domain name is something like 7-9$ a year, if they are not sought after (for example : avengers.com would be WAY more expensive than classiccomicsforum.com)

So what's the best service to go to that will both host a webpage and sell us a URL at less than $10 a year -- or are we better off doing this through two different channels?

Looks like web.com is the best value out there right now: 50 cents a month and Consumer Reports ranked them the second best webhost out there. Now I just need a frontpage to put there.

We only need webhosting if you want any additional content besides the forum. Otherwise we can just point to boards.net for $1-10/yr or whatever ($20?).

There's some fine print in that price Well they can't say .50 per month if that's only the price you're getting for the first month, and I doubt consumer reports would have made them the second best domain host if that's what they were doing. Still, if the price is going to change at some point, it would be nice to see this before you've completed checkout.
