Moscow, The Soviet Union (Translated from Russian)
Leonid passed grimly through the doorway of his commanding officer. He placed a young woman’s lifeless body on the desk and saluted.
“You surprise me, Starfire,” said the officer. “You have finished your task much more quickly than expected.”
“Anything for the motherland,” replied the Soviet Union’s top assassin.
“You have done very well,” said Leonid’s superior with a slight smile. He stood as he proclaimed, “You have earned the title of ‘The Red Star.’”
“When may I leave?” asked the assassin coldly.
“Anytime you wish. Dismissed.”
The newly christened Red Star felt as if a great burden lifted was lifted from his back. He would leave for the States immediately. The Soviet Union had no challenges left for him and he wished to seek adventure and riches in the United States of America. His freedom to do so had come at a great price. Murdering his fiancé was not a pleasant thing to do. Nevertheless, he looked forward to “playing the field,” as they say in America.
Atlanta, Georgia
BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!
Hank and Don Hall gave one another a ‘high-five’ as they watched Atlanta’s Timex building burst into flames. The two Lords of Chaos were having the time of their lives. Traveling America had been a blast. The brothers were unlike other siblings in that they enjoyed a special relationship as best friends and partners in adventure and crime.
“Where to next, baby bro?” asked the Hawk.
“Wanna blow up the capital building?” answered Dove.
“DUDE! That sounds awesome!” exclaimed Hank Hall with a grin.
“Okay! Let’s go!” said his brother Don.
“Wait a minute…did you mean the capital of Georgia, or…” asked the tall and muscular Hawk.
“Well, we can do that too, but I was thinking of Washington, myself,” said Dove as he placed his hand firmly on his big brother’s shoulder in a gesture of camaraderie.
“Can we do New York after Atlanta and Washington?” asked the Hawk.
“Anything you want, buddy!” answered the younger brother cheerily.
Gotham City’s Innwood District: The Home of Christopher Martin
Have you ever had one of those days when you just knew you would have been better off if you had just stayed in bed? Helena was in the middle of one right now. The whole day had basically been one big confusing mess from the time she woke up in a garbage disposal bin, to the discovery that Christopher Martin, the Sportsmaster of all people, was residing in her private apartment, to the startling revelation that her father and uncle were still both bachelors and now she somehow no longer existed! Upon entering ‘her apartment’ Chris Martin acted as if shewere the intruder, and to top all of that off the two of them were now alone in a closet together in the Sportsmaster’s ‘heroic attempt to save the Huntress from an attack by Wonder Woman!
“You’d better have a good explanation for all of this,” said Helena Wayne as the young pair walked out of the closet.
“I’ll do my best,” said Chris Martin as he winced at the damage to his brownstone apartment. “As near as I can tell, you are one of several people who just popped into our universe today.”
“And you know this, because….” asked the Huntress as she tinkered with her Titans East communicator.
“I’m the world’s greatest hacker!” explained the young man with a smile. “The Super Fiends have amazing technology. Apparently your energy signature is somehow different from the energy signatures of people in this universe. Either that or there is just something about you that drives the Hall of Injustice’s radar crazy. In any case, I keep constant tabs on their activity.”
Christopher gazed deeply into her piercing steel colored eyes as she continued the interrogation, “And if their technology is so great, how do you do all this hacking without them catching you?”
“I’d like to take the credit, but Lex Luthor shared a lot of his genius with me,” he answered noticing how soft his visitor’s skin looked.
The raven haired beauty rubbed her temples, “You are involved with Lex Luthor?”
“Well, I was…until they killed him a few months back,” he said mournfully as he brushed back his curly auburn locks from his forehead. “He was earth’s last great hero…and now he’s gone. I…I have dedicated my life to picking up where he left off. It hasn’t been easy. They know I am out here somewhere. They couldn’t find me until today.”
“…Because of me?” asked the Huntress. Christopher Martin’s simple glance at Helena Wayne clearly answered the query affirmatively.
“ …I’m sorry.” The Huntress was having a difficult time accepting all of this. “What kind of place is this?” she thought as she noted family pictures displayed on the wall. “Everything is backwards.” The pictures showcased a happy family. Nicholas, Cindy, and Chris Martin were in most of the portraits. “Are your parents both still alive?” she inquired.
“Yeah, but they don’t know about my powers or that I am the Sportsmaster. I’m still trying to figure out how you knew,” he replied.
“Let’s just say that there is a Chris Martin Sportsmaster in my universe too, and leave it at that,” offered the fledgling lawyer. “How about your sister?”
“Sister? I don’t have a sister, or a brother for that matter,” said Chris as he grabbed some linens out of the closet. “Does your Chris have a sister?”
“Uhhhh…he’s not my Chris. Never mind him,” she said as she received the towels and bar of soap that her ‘host’ offered.
“You…uhm, you look like you might appreciate a chance to take a shower,” explained the young hero nervously. He didn’t want to offend the lady who was turning out to be the girl of his dreams.
“Well, you got that right,” remarked Helena, “but how can I be sure that I will be safe while I am in the shower. I just met you, and apparently Wonder Woman and her friends are out to get me.”
“Well, I am here to protect you,” he began shyly, “and if its me you are worried about you can put me to work. Is there anything I can do for you while you are in the bathroom?”
“Here,” she said as she took a very smelly Huntress uniform out of her bag, “this could use a good wash. And if you have time maybe you could work on this,” she added as she handed him her Titans of Justice communicator. “And afterwards? Hot tea and croissants would be nice if you happen to have any around.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Helena chuckled to herself as she thought of the difficulty the Sportsmaster would have fixing her communicator without the component she had secretly removed. The shower was wonderfully hot and refreshing. A hot shower followed by tea and croissants was the Huntresses’ constitutional routine when in the middle of a seemingly impossible case to solve. She had to get out of this place. “What is this place, anyway?” she thought as she smelled the soap. It reminded her of something her dad would use. “Guy’s soap. Yuck. I miss my dove. I wonder what dad would do if he were trapped alone in a strange universe where evil was good and good was…
…evil…
…the Universe of Evil…”
“THAT’S IT!” she exclaimed as she turned off the water and toweled herself. She was thoroughly familiar with all of her father’s case files. The lawyer in her insisted she memorize them forwards and backwards. The detective in her always sought for possible connections in current and past cases. One of her dad’s files from his early ‘Super Friends’ days was a case entitled ‘The Universe of Evil.’ Apparently Superman traded places with an evil Superman from another universe. This place…this place she was in now had to be it. The Huntress had somehow gotten transferred to the Universe of Evil! But how?
As she toweled herself dry and donned the spare costume in her hip purse she thought of Nucleus’s comments about the dangerous technology at S.T.A.R. Labs Tower. Then she thought about the three bombs the Titans East investigated as she, Junjie Quick, and Sonic Boom evacuated scientists to safety. She didn’t remember hearing an explosion, but if one of those bombs had exploded, perhaps that coupled with the experimental technology of S.T.A.R could account for how she got blown into another universe. She seemed to remember that Superman had transferred universes just in a simple volcanic eruption case.
“Wait a minute! What about the others? Chris said that the Hall of Injustice radar had detected several new people in this universe. The others must have been transferred too! And they survived too! She had to find them! She put her mask on and burst out of the bathroom door.
“Whoa!” exclaimed the Sportsmaster in amazement at his first sight of the Huntress in her dark costume.
“Suit up, SM! We’ve got a mission!” she said with determination.
“There’s a couple of complications,” said the young man as he changed into his baseball uniform. “I think I have fixed your communicator for the most part, but there seems to be some type of component missing.”
“Don’t worry about it,” said the Dark knight Daughter as they went out the door. “What’s the other ‘complication?’
“I am no longer in contact with my other self…the one that Wonder Woman took. He is unconscious,” he explained.
“How do you know this?” asked the daughter of the Catwoman.
“I just know,” said the Sportsmaster mysteriously, “but I cannot communicate with him because he is knocked out cold. I can, however sense that he is moving. He is coming this direction. I think they are coming for us!”
“Then we will have to be ready for them,” said the woman who ‘always gets her prey.’
"If we are going to have any hope of defeating the Super Fiends we will have to take out their leader first," warned the Sportsmaster. "The others are nothing without him,"
"You mean the Batman?" asked the Huntress as she loaded her wrist launcher with a few arrows.
"Robin," corrected the young hero. The Huntress noted the dread in his voice as the heroes from two universes ran to the nearby park. Fortunately, there were no children playing there at that time. It would make a safe place to wage the imminent war. The Huntress took her place in the shadows as the Sportsmaster climbed to the top of the Jungle Gym. He only waited there for two minutes before his ‘guests’ arrived.
“Holy monkey bars, Batman! Its another Sportsmaster!” shouted Robin. “Get ‘em!”
Batman did an aerial flip with intent to ‘boot’ his target in the jaw. The Sportsmaster waited to replicate himself until the last possible second. Just before the Batman’s heel would have connected the Sportsmaster ducked to reveal a second Sportsmaster behind him.
WHAK! Thunk…Thunk…Thunk…Splat!
The Sportsmaster’s bat successfully took down ‘the Bat,” whose head and rib cage hit several steel bars before the villain landed unconscious on the ground.
Robin threw a series of bat-a-rangs at the two Sportsmasters.
Whack! Splat! One of them was hit in the forehead and fell backwards of the jungle gym to the ground beneath. The remaining Sportsmaster ran towards the trees. Robin did quadruple summersault in the air to catch up to the Universe of Evil’s last hero. The Sportsmaster replicated himself into four men, two of whom Robin quickly took out. The other two ran backwards into the woods. Robin did a flying leap and kicked both of them into unconsciousness.
Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!
The Boy Wonder fell to the ground in a drugged state. The Huntress jumped down from the tree above and kneeled over the body of one of the Sportsmasters.
Just then the Batman leaped up from the patch of dirt where he had fallen and lunged towards the Huntress. Helena Wayne knew what her father was capable of, and concluded that an evil version of Bruce Wayne could most likely be the world’s greatest assassin. If she were going to defeat a wicked Batman, she would have to do it quickly. She had only one advantage: she knew who he was, but he didn’t know who she was. She deliberately aimed her crossbow at the Batman’s abdomen. As she predicted, he agilely avoided her arrow. But that set him up squarely in the course of the second arrow that she sent with her wrist launcher. The Huntress wiped the dust off her hands and prepared to go help the Sportsmaster.
“I don’t know who you are, but you’re going down, you little witch!” exclaimed a female voice.
The Huntress whirled around to find herself face-to-face with a very tough and angry looking Wonder Woman.
