Batman The Dark Knight Returns animated film is one of the most accurate adaptations of any comic and arguably the best Batman film. Peter Weller did surprisingly well as an aged Batman and Michael Emerson's subtle performance as the Joker was very effective. A Death in the Family wasn't published until 1988-1989 while the original The Dark Knight Returns came out in 1986.

The timing isn't the question ( I remember well when Death in the Family was as I voted to Kill Jason Todd), the question is does this panel from DKR Robin imageand the ensuing narration/dialogue referring to a death of Robin imply specifically the death of Jason Todd in the DKR continuity, (pre-saging the death of Jason by a few years) or just "A" Robin as in one of Batmman's partners. The costume memorial and death were in DKR in '86, the question is which Robin if dead. -M |

I spent the last two Saturday mornings watching part one and two of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS on DVD and rather enjoyed it. It's been a while since I read the books, but it seemed like a pretty faithful adaptation. The original wouldn't have had references to Jason Todd's death, I guess. If I remember correctly, there was a Robin who had died as part of the why Bruce retired, and what made the appearance of Carrie Kelly as Robin so unlikely in that storyline-Bruce didn't want another life on the line as his responsibility. Whether it was specifically Jason Todd (who was appearing as Robin at the time in the in continuity books, I can't recall, but if I also recall, part of the buzz at the time of the Jason Todd vote was whether it was a move towards the future depicted in Miller's dystopian Bat-future. It's been a good long while so my memory is suitably fuzzy right now (and I am trying to write a Diamond order currently so my brain is complete mush at the moment) so I could well be off in my recollections. -M DKR explicitly states that Bruce's reason for retiring was the death of Jason Todd. In fact, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that, while DKR was not written to be in continuity, Denny O'Neil's post Crisis reboot was originally conceived as beginning with Year One and ending with DKR. It's not until A Death in the Family, where Bruce does not retire at the end, that DKR becomes explicitly removed from continuity as Batman's future. |

That's what I thought, but I didn't trust my memory, I just remembered the panel, the death being mentioned in DKR, and the buzz linking the two when Todd's death vote occurred. -M |

I finished Showcase Presents Batman vol 5 (Detective 391-407 & Batman #216-228). I really enjoyed it, but other than Man-Bat and the "introduction" of The League of Assassins there are no established villains. I'm curious, was this a deliberate decision?

A quick glance at Mike's Amazing World shows that for years there, none of the traditional Batman villains appeared on covers. The trend was definitely toward mysteries: straight, Gothic, eerie, supernatural, etc. |
