I recently ordered Batman: A Celebration of 75 Years (I got the Superman one too. It should be in soon.)and I was extremely impressed with the presentation. A few of the stories I already have, but I liked the selection and liked having so many classic Batman stories in one volume.

I wish there was a Commissioner Gordon: A Celebration of 75 Years volume (Joker doesn't celebrate his 75th anniversary until next year) if for no other reason than to get reprints of stories that don't often get reprinted. While Gordon's role is mostly a figure to provide exposition, there are quite a few stories where he plays either a bigger or major role that rarely gets reprinted outside of volumes which aimed to gather an entire run. And with the Gotham television show with Gordon as the lead, now is a good time for a retrospective volume on the character. |

I was considering the Joker volume, but when I looked at it I saw the last 20% or so had black pages, and I really have no interest in modern (which is what I associate black pages with) non-Loeb/Sale Batman.

There's probably a lot of modern day stuff that could be included, but a few Golden/Silver Age stories that might be worthwhile:
"The People vs. The Batman" from Batman #7, where Gordon makes an astonishing speech defending Batman in court and makes him an honorary member of the GCPD.
"Commissioner Gordon Walks a Beat" from Detective Comics #121, where a criminal blackmails the mayor into removing Gordon as commissioner. Unable to sack him, he demotes him to patrolman and forces the new commissioner to sever all ties with Batman.
"The Private Life of Commissioner Gordon" from World's Finest #53, where Batman impersonates Gordon to save him from an assassin.
"Commissioner Gordon's Greatest Case" from Batman #71, where Gordon decides to see if he can deduce batman's secret identity.
"If I Were Batman" from Detective Comics #255, where Gordon is one of a number of citizens given an opportunity to be "Batman for a day" by wearing the costume and accompanying Robin on patrol while Batman is out of town.

This is such a great story! (Although it's #225, not #255. It's also the first appearance of J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter, the start of the Silver Age!)
What really cracks me up is how chubby Gordon is, and how ridiculously chunky he looks in the Batman suit.
Batman #7 is also a good one. I haven't read the others.

I'd say more but I'd rather not spoil an issue you'll be reviewing soon in your 'Batman 300 and up' thread. That's the reunion with Sarah Essen, right? I haven't read it since I was eleven. All I remember is them going to see Zorro. |

That's the reunion with Sarah Essen, right? I haven't read it since I was eleven. All I remember is them going to see Zorro. That's the one, though I don't think I had read Year One when this issue came out so Sarah Essen wasn't anybody to me. My clearest memory of this issue is that of Gordon watching Batman swing by and lost in reverie, thinks to himself that had he taken better care of himself, could have followed the same path. Norm Breyfogle's image of Gordon imagining himself in Batman's outfit is one of those striking visuals that the artist excells at. The final page is memorable too. |

I recently saw Batman: Assault on Arkham. Long waiting list at the library. It was more of a Suicide Squad movie than a Batman movie. I'm not familiar with any of the SS outside Harley and Amanda Waller. I liked how the whole fiasco played out in the movie was the result of the NSA being a bunch of asses. I gather this movie isn't set in the DCAU but rather the contonuity of a video game or two. Bats' presence was limited, but he was clever in how he went about his business in this one. A lot of villains. Riddler (Edward Nygma as Edward Snowden), Joker, and Penguin all show up.
