Yeah, that makes sense to me.
I think the first time I noticed this whole Character Cover Monopoly was with Wolverine. Even if it was a character I love, like say, Jonah Hex, I still wouldn't feel right with him on all these unrelated covers.
Seriously

The Rocket Raccoon thing has been going on for months hasn't it? I noticed yesterday that the place that sells comics here has more of each variant than regular cover. Artist variants are ok, but I don't like the wrong character or those Snorkin Labbit variants.

On the other hand, I did snag another La Mole variant...one of the better Humberto Ramos covers.

one of the better Humberto Ramos covers. Stiff competition to be sure. Not a Ramos fan at all. Speaking of variants, I grabbed the LEGO variant of Justice League United #6 today because it has J'onn on it, and the regular doesn't. It wasn't bagged, boarded and priced (as they usually do with variants), so I figured it was $3.99. Got to the register and, of course, it was $15. I tried to talk my way into getting it for cover, but couldn't. Apparently, they quit pricing the variants as such hoping people would be buying enough to not notice when a $4 book rings up as $15. Ah well. I'll go back and get it once it hits their back issue bin for $6.

Meanwhile, there is no more Legion of Superheroes. They are appearing in the current Justice League United story line though.

I really should check into some classic LoSH. I enjoyed the New52 titles well enough at the time. Continuity concerns me, though.

I started with the 2nd group by Abnett and Lanning, then read most of the first group and then read the 3rd group (didn't care much for Waid and Bedard, but liked the Shooter issues)). I got through it pretty well without wikipedia/google. Just don't start with 5 years later or so, because that one works better if you know the characters and backstory.

I think you could start with the Great Darkness Saga and (assuming you have a basic knowledge) be fine. You could also start a with Zero Hour (the 'Threeboot') when they had 2 titles with triangles like Superman. The pre-new 52 Mark Waid run is also pretty reader friendly. I didn't love it (it was good, but seemed off somehow), but it's decent. That one turns into 'Supergirl and the Legion' after 15 issues or so. My favorite is probably the Abnett/Lanning era, but I think you'd need to start with Zero Hour to appreciate it

Today I read the Winter Soldier (from after Bucky 'died' as Cap in Fear Itself)... not bad, but not great either. Brubaker does love his spy stuff, and that's fine, it's a pretty good spy story.
However, for 14 issues it's all one story that probably could have fit in 8, maybe even 6. Bucky is thoroughly incompetent throughout, which is annoying. Mostly, though, it seems odd to have a cold war-redux story in a modern marvel book... it was fine in the 80s, or even the early 90s, but yet another 20 years removed, if seems very out of place. How are their former soviet scientists still kicking around? They should be long dead of old age. The disonance of it kinda hurt my head.
I was happy they ended his relationship with Black Widow at the end of it, though, since I found that to be kinda odd... especially when they retconned it to have started in the 50s.

Are there going to be any significant stretches that I should avoid? I can probably handle a stretch of six or so bad issues in the midst of a book I enjoy. Also, if I don't like Great Darkness Saga can it be assumed LoSH is not for me, or is there another point I could skip to?

No. I'd read Legion on and off when I could get issues as a kid from the 70's. There really isn't anything you need to know other than the characters and the basics. Wiki can get you up to speed pretty quickly.
If I had to recommend a jumping in point, that would be it.
The N52 version has been the weakest since that time. If you liked it (I didn't hate it) then you'll probably like everything from TGDS onward.
