Not a big fan of Casey's, but I pre-ordered this anyway because it's Captain Victory. Meanwhile I've never even heard of Captain Victory, but I'll give anything Casey does a shot. (+Nathan Fox and that cover certainly didn't hurt). Awesome ! Thanks Dizzy D ! Anxious to hear if you like it.

Is there another Crisis already? It's comic tie-in to the Infinite Crisis video game. Gotcha. I noticed in hondobrode's bargain thread a bunch of DC stuff involving the various worlds was on sale and then saw that and assumed they were resetting again already.

Nah, it coincides with the release (finally) of Grant Morrison's Multiversity. -M

New Avengers #23 It's all kicking off now! Loved Reed's visit to Latveria, Hickman writes a great Doom. Bruce's scene was nice as well, driving out to face the end of his life the same way he's had to live it, alone. 4/5
Supergirl #34 Another by the numbers issue. Pretty much just a recap of the events of Doomed so far, with a clichéd rescue thrown in (hey, everyone's dead except for the exact two people I'm looking for who are in the first place I look). Dull. 2/5
Batman & Robin #34 Solid enough issue, there's always something satisfying about this book. Couple of plot points I'm not liking. a) The stupid mega-techno-godslayer armour. An attempt to allow Bruce to mix it up with the big power players, rather than take the hint that if you have use such silly plot devices, you're probably writing the character wrong. b) Any uses of Apokolips these days inevitably end up with me groaning at how badly it and the New Gods are handled. I anticipate similar from this storyline. Lovely last page splash though. 3/5

last two weeks worth of comics
1. MULTIVERSITY #1 ****1/2 out of 5: You can't argue with cartoon physics. Just a warning, if you didn't like Final Crisis, this comic will KILL you. 2. ASTRO CITY #14 ****1/2: an old lady with a past helps old killer robots, but then fortune turns 3. STAR WARS #20 ***1/2: sadly, it is the end of my favorite ongoing Star Wars comic of all time 4. TINY TITANS: RETURN TO THE TREEHOUSE #3 ***1/2: I wonder what else they could turn Freddie into? 5. SENSATION COMICS #1 ***1/2: It's been years since I've read a Wonder Woman comic I liked this much. 6. BATMAN & ROBIN #34 ***1/2: This arc has been very good so far, I just hope it's a short stay on Apokolypse 7. BATGIRL #34 ***1/2: It took until the last issue for Gail to give me a good story 8. TEEN TITANS #2 ***: I like the use of Bunker so far, Raven as a rock star? we'll see 9. BATMAN #34 ***: It's nice to see Dr. Thompkins again, the guest art was not to my liking 10. WORLDS' FINEST #26 **1/2: A new Power Girl for the main DC Earth as the former stars of this title get less than half the book as they return home 11. GODZILLA: CATACLYSM #1 **1/2: What happens after the kaiju stomp everything? They come back! 12. SUPERMAN/ WONDER WOMAN #11 **1/2: several deals with several devils made here, another bad guest artist 13. SUPERGIRL #34 **: mediocre filler, maybe Michael can make it to Supergirl reset #1000 this fall, tolerable guest artist 14. JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #4 **: This title has been a severe disappointment. 15. GREEN LANTERN CORPS #34 **: When superhero relationships go bad... 16. SUPERBOY #34 *: Kuder had it for a moment and then it all fell apart with this concluding chapter.

The same way all the other similar images of female superheroes did over the course of the past twenty five years.

I am sure it got by editorial because they asked Manara to do a variant and that is pretty much typical Manara. The question that should be asked is why did Marvel think asking Manara to do a variant for a solo led super-heroine title announced at the SDCC panel called Women in Marvel that was hyping up how Marvel is focusing on strong female leads and moving away from sexualized images and characterizations that are not friendly to the female-reader market in many people's eyes was a good idea? You hire Manara, this is Manara, good or bad. If you didn't know what you were going to get from Manara, you haven't been paying attention to the work he has done for the past 45 years in comics (his first work was in '69). In general, I like Manara's Marvel output, not as familiar with his Euro stuff other than knowing a lot of it is erotic in nature. I don't like this particular cover, especially if the implication he is just swiping himself and another image he did and just putting the Spider-Woman costume on it without actually doing a new composition is true. I don't think the composition is very good on this cover anyways, as the transition from the figure in the foreground to the cityscape in the background seems poorly done, almost a bad layering job in an art program or a lightboxed image atop another background where they don't fit in scale, texture, tone, or coloring style. And that's not even taking into consideration the pose and anatomical features that are showcased in the work. -M

I mentioned a while back that my last Heavyink order was missing Life With Archie #36, despite it being on the invoice. I sent them a message and they never replied, even though they claim to reply to all messages within two days. I tried to make a post in the forum asking if anyone else experienced anything similar, and the forums were down. I couldn't view or post anywhere, and it looked like it had been five days since the last post. I tried to post again a week later, the forums were still down.
I sent another message two weeks later asking for my account to be deleted. There's actually no way to delete it from the control panel. Again, no reply. So I simply deleted my credit card info. I tried to post in the forum again, to badmouth Heavyink, forums were still down.
I should not that I don't get the shipment email until after my books arrive, and once when contacting customer service it took about a week for them to reply, so I knew things were going south.
Well, today I signed on Heavyink to see what was going on, and they said they tried to charge my card and couldn't. I looked at my calendar, and had no shipments due for over a month, so I looked at the message again. They were trying to charge me for July's comics. I checked my bank account, I was never charged.
So I thought they screwed me out of a comic, turns out I screwed them out of nine comics. I'm not paying for them either. They should have charged before they shipped, and the kind of customer service I"m getting, no way do I feel bad about this. I actually feel better.

Deadpool artist Scott Koblish said it best on Facebook:
"C'mon- it's Milo Manara- it's like getting angry at a bird for flying."
Marvel knew what they were doing when they hired him to do variant covers. It's Manara, it's what he does. He draws sexual women; this time it's just with costumes. It's no different than the other covers he did for them in the past.

Yeah, my statement was more of an attempt at humor. I am aware of Manara's past work, and I'm sure Marvel was aware of it too when they asked him for the cover. I'm just astounded that they would go ahead and publish that specific cover given, as MRP said, their recent attempts to portray women in a more diverse, non-sexualized manner. And those three illustrations of Scarlet Witch, Shanna, and Valkyrie are nowhere near as bad as Spider-Woman.

My copy of The Sakai Project finally came in at my LCS yesterday. I bought it mostly because I'm a Usagi completest and firmly believe in supporting a good cause supporting one of my absolute favorite creators, but I didn't expect the book to touch me the way it did. I've always understood Usagi to be a masterful balance between dark and light, dire maturity and child-like wonder, but seeing the artists capture those sides of the character so beautifully stunned me. From Katie Cook's adorable Usagi standing out in the rain to John McCrea's Uagi, blood-soaked and dying, it was just a beautiful volume with so many pieces that told complete and vibrant stories all their own. I'll be reading this one again and again.

First issue of Multiversity read much as advertised in the promotional articles and interviews from the last several months. A bit underwhelming, perhaps because so much has been given away beforehand by Morrison in interviews. I expect it will read better after the series is complete. The artwork was a serious disappointment, though. I'm not a fan of Ivan Reis but I've seen much better work from him than this. It was like he was trying to emulate the worst of 2000s-era superhero comics.

Robots In Disguise #32 Great issue. A good dose of plot progression, Prowl being his usual machiavellian self, and the return of Susan Journeyer and Josh Boyfriend! The resolution to the cliffhanger from last issue was a huge cop out, but the last page reveal more than compensated if we average out the bookends. Great stuff. 5/5
The Multiversity #1 Not going to comment on this too much until it's finished (was tempted to wait and read it in trade), but I thoroughly enjoyed this and it's reassured me that this series is going to live up to my high expectations. Okay, one comment: Chubby da Choona...in Monkey form! 5/5
New Guardians #34 Nothing special but a decent enough space romp. These New Guardians seem a bit brittle. 3/5
