It's not quite new, but I read the 'Emperor Penguin' trade from Detective today on the train... it was decent. I like that it was outside of all the crossover nonsense (just a passing reference to Damian dying, which was necessary to explain why he was gone). In fact, most of the single issues could stand as single issues, which is rare today.
Sadly, they just weren't that good. Batman Beyond-style Joker gangs are pretty old at this point. Having someone replace a well-loved character is as well. It's too bad, too because the starting point (The Penguin wanting to be known as nicer rich guy than Bruce Wayne) was really interesting.. it just fizled out and turned into some other guy taking over Penguin's empire, which is sure not to last very long.
The Poison Ivy issue was really good, though, as was the fill in, where we meet the new Penguin (when he was still a henchman).
I'm still debating on the new Elfquest trades.. I wouldn't mind having a nice set of trades for the whole story, but at this point I don't have alot of faith that will actually happen... this is at least the 4th or 5th time they've started re-issuing the trades.

Ratings for the last two weeks of comics
1. Adventures of Superman #15 ****1/2 out of 5: what a Superman/ Iron Giant team up would have looked like, with awesome Doc Shaner art 2. Earth 2 #26 ****: Val Zod gets more awesome by the issue as does the rest of the cast, did not see that Superman revelation coming 3. Invincible #113 ****: there's a new Grayson, Robot tries to cut a deal and lots of good stuff crammed into one issue 4. Star Wars: Rebel Heist #4 ***1/2: it all comes together very well, I could have used a longer epilogue 5. Action Comics Annual #3 ***1/2 6. Action Comics #34 ***1/2: Doomed remains a very good crossover and the vast casts from Action and the JLA get a lot of good moments 7. Superman/ Wonder Woman Annual #1 ***1/2 8. Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet #3 ***1/2: I get the feeling Kato is going to put the smackdown on Robin before all of this is over 9. Flash Gordon #4 ***1/2: this one keeps getting better and is now on the recommended side of the ledger 10. Detective Comics Annual #3 ***: very good story undermined by some rather mediocre artwork 11. Justice League #32 ***: never cared for Doom Patrol before and that streak will continue 12. Aquaman Annual #2 ***: I enjoyed the Wonder Woman team up with Aquaman and the one with Mera 13. Detective Comics #34 ***: Harvey had him for just a brief shining moment 14. Sinestro #4 ***: the new villains weren't much, but Sinestro himself is always interesting 15. Aquaman and the Others #5 **1/2: one of my favorite Others returns to help save the day 16. Grayson #2 **: at least Janin is making the book look pretty 17. Green Lantern #34 **: I liked the family time part, really not looking forward to the New Gods showing up 18. Justice League 3000 #9 **: slowly but surely it's getting less annoying

Was The Thanos Revelation this week? I bought that, but I think Amazon may get books a week late.

New Avengers #22 Poor art (check out how static the full page spread of Panther hitting Namor is), and lack of plot movement really killed this one for me. The events of this issue could have been told in 2 pages. 2/5
Superman & Wonder Woman Annual 2014 Not a bad chapter. Advances the plot. The panel of Wonder Woman checking her swing just in time could have been done better though, kind of killed what should have been a dramatic moment. 3/5
Action Comics Annual 2014 Definite downgrade after reading S&WW. A pretty tedious read, even if I'm enjoying the Steel & Lana stuff. 2/5
Action Comics #34 I really don't care about any of these new characters. Ghost guy. Raise the dead woman. Bleh. I've always hated the switch from Superman having heat vision to him having Cyclops-esque optic blasts, so him now having manga style super-ultimate-mega-optic blasts really isn't impressing me. 2/5
Original Sin - Thor & Loki #3 Good old scheming Odin. Tricked a bit too easily for my liking though. Not a fan of Angela, but Loki makes up for that. I do like Bianchi's art in the right setting, which this is, but it always comes across a bit 'samey' to me. I've seen it all before. 3/5
Original Sin - Hulk vs Iron Man #4 Nice ending, I liked the smart Hulk not being Banner. As suspected, Tony wasn't responsible after all, but as usual these days, there's always a little twist. An enjoyable little mini over all. And no Bagley this week, yay. 4/5
Batman Eternal #18 The Arkham plot is probably my least favourite, so showcasing pretty much everything but this week worked out great for me. 4/5
Tiny Titans - Return To The Treehouse #3 Not much to say about this. Very good, as usual. 4/5
Green Lantern #34 Not a bad issue until the last page. Highfather is just a white Darkseid clone now? Urghh. Why can't people just leave the New Gods alone? 2/5
She-Hulk #7 Pulido returns, immediately catapulting this back to one of my favourite books. Another incredibly fun issue, with an Eric O'Grady name check thrown in as the icing on the cake. Wish Pulido wouldn't do the repeated panels thing, but if it means he can keep a better schedule I can live with it. Overall, top notch. 5/5
Superior Spider-Man #32 Never read 2099, so found the first half pretty boring (I'm sure there were plenty of easter eggs I was missing), but picked up in the second half and really piqued my interest for the Spiderverse event. Loved Otto immediately figuring out it was an alternate reality and just accepting it and changing his plans accordingly. The Anna Maria thing was a bit creepy though. 4/5
Superior Foes Of Spider-Man #14 Hilarious, as always. From Silvermane peeking at Beetle on the loo, to the two page chase scene, Lieber's range and storytelling is simply perfect. 5/5
Moon Knight #6 Great issue, loving the done-in-one format. Intriguing little tale, and beautiful art. I had to stop reading and just stare at that panel of the illuminated New York skyline for a good few seconds, simply glorious. THe only negative is it's the last issue. Not sticking around for Wood. 5/5
Detective Comics #34 Very pretty, but I really can't remember what the plot is. I get the feeling I'd enjoy the plot if I could remember more about what's happened, but there's something about the previous issues that make them totally forgettable. Need to go back and re-read the arc I think. Groaned at Bullock saving Batman, but the scene redeemed itself with the handcuffing immediately after. Isn't Bullock supposed to be thin though in the Nu52? 3/5

Hmmm DC just announced a new series I may have to break down and try...Gotham by Midnight by Ray Fawkes and Ben Templesmith. Jim Corrigna is the lead character and it looks to be a Gotham Central meets BPRD style of book. Templemith's character designs look interesting. BC article
CBR articlesample art... It may be intriguing enough for me to break my new52 moratorium, especially if it is a $2.99 title. -M
