The Brownstone, Manhattan
“Good morning team!” Emerald Archer smiled as he strutted into the JSU’s monitor room. The room was empty except for Liberty Belle, who was sitting at her laptop intently. He swung his cap around in one hand, with a can of Pepsi in the other; whistling happily as he walked in. Liberty Belle rolled her eyes as he looked her up and down and said, “looking cute today, Belle!”
“Go and perv on someone else,” she scolded, but with a slight grin, “I’m pretty sure today is somebody else’s turn.”
“We haven’t exactly got a wide range of females in this team,” Emerald Archer replied cockily, “you, Huntress, Batwoman and Fury, and the last one is taken!”
“Speaking of Fury, here she comes now,” Liberty Belle said, as Fury and her husband, Hawk Warrior entered the room, hand in hand. They kissed passionately, causing Liberty Belle to blush and look away.
“You know, Batwoman is taken too...” she pointed out, “so don’t think you can get lucky with her either.”
“Oh, c’mon, we all know Batwoman and Robin have no chance!” The archer replied. “The missions have been so tense with those two...maybe if she dumped him, she could get with me. I’d know how to push her buttons,” he chuckled. He quickly shut up as Batwoman stormed into the building, followed by Robin who looked annoyed.
Liberty Belle closed her laptop shut and stood up, pulling out a flash drive and gliding over to a huge computer. “You know, if you ever want to actually get a girlfriend, then you should treat us with respect, instead of looking at our ‘assets’,” she said to him. Emerald Archer grinned as he caught up to her, leaning across the keyboard and into her eyes.
“I guess you’ve got a point...not that I’m listening to you anyway! So, what’s the flash drive for?” He enquired, looking up at the monitor. Suddenly, a satellite map appeared on the screen, with blue dots scattered around Manhattan.
“This is where the Ultra-Humanite has been sneaking around lately, robbing banks and other little petty crimes.” She explained, as the small group crowded around her.
“That’s not befitting of the Ultra-Humanite at all!” Fury exclaimed as the six heroes gathered around the monitor screen. “Something is going on with him, I just know it...”
“He’s trying to attract our attention.” Robin explained.
Hawk Warrior felt uneasy as he was stood in between the strained couple of Batwoman and Robin, and the tension could be cut with a knife. “Why else would he commit these pathetic crimes so close to us?”
“There’s a pattern, look,” Batwoman pointed out, tracing a shape with her finger. “It’s like a hexagon. My guess is that he’ll strike next on 52nd street. And judging by the time of each crime, I’d say we should be covering the area within the next hour before we’re too late.”
“Okay, let’s go and settle this,” Fury laughed, cracking her knuckles. “It’s been a few days since I’ve busted some heads!”
Suddenly, a new window popped up on the monitor. Jade Sentinel greeted the team whilst what sounded like carnage raged on in the background.
“We need some reinforcements down here! We’re in trouble!” He shouted. Liberty Belle gasped as Dreamsweeper suddenly appeared behind the team leader, flying backwards as if he had been hit by a train. There was a loud scream and a huge explosion, and suddenly the picture rattled.
“Jade Sentinel, what’s going on down there?!?” Liberty Belle asked.
“Solomon...Grundy, he’s...back and more powerful than he‘s been in a long time! I need three or four reinforcements, NOW! I’ll send you the co-ordinates. Jade Sentinel, out!”
Liberty Belle immediately sprang to action, running over to a set of teleporter tubes in the room. “Emerald Archer, Fury and Hawk Warrior, you’re with me! It looks like somehow, Grundy’s come back.”
“What? How did half of the team find him anyway?” Emerald Archer asked as he ran onto a teleporter.
“Some old lady was complaining of huge noises coming from under a swamp near her home. Now we know why,” Hawk Warrior explained as the four heroes disappeared.
Robin and Batwoman were left by themselves in the monitor room. Batwoman alerted the spare team-mates to Ultra-Humanite’s plan, and immediately made haste for the door. Robin frowned as he followed her, catching up to her on a nearby rooftop.
“Di Di, please, can’t we talk?” He asked, as the blonde bombshell formerly known as Sonic Boom jumped over a building with expert precision.
“We’re on the job, Dick, so no, we cannot,” she replied, jumping down into an alleyway. “We’ll talk later.”
“That’s what you said yesterday, and the day before,” he replied.
DiDi Queen sighed as she began to run faster, definitely giving Robin the message to back off. “Girls,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head, as they ran into 52nd street.
The street was in utter chaos. Men and women were screaming, running in different directions to get away. Fire hydrants had been set off, spraying water all over the road. Buildings were set alight, and the fire department was desperately trying to extinguish the mess. Batwoman ran into the mass of people and destruction, holding her mouth closed as the heavy smoke hung around her. Suddenly she felt safer when she saw the Huntress swing off a burning building, two small babies in her arms. She handed them to their frightened mother, before heading back in.
“What in the name of Clint Eastwood is going on here?” Vigilante asked as he rode in on the scene, twirling a gun around his finger. He quickly joined Batwoman and Robin, as Sixty Minute Soldier, and the new recruit to the team, Wildcat II, teleported into the street. Shining Knight appeared from the skies riding Winged Victory, landing next to the group.
“What is up with Ultra-Humanite?” He asked, as suddenly a car hurtled towards them through the smoke.
“GET DOWN!!” Robin shouted, quickly falling to the ground. The Sixty Minute Soldier took a defensive position, stopping the rogue car in its tracks.
“I don’t know what’s up with that great ape, but I think now is the time to stop him!” He suggested, running into the smoke. The group followed him, being careful of more flying cars. Soon, Ultra-Humanite was in view, smashing the road with his huge fists.
“You better tell me what’s going on, Humanite,” Robin warned, flipping over the behemoth as he slammed his fists at the old Boy Wonder. “Attacking like this is definitely not your style.”
“I’ll tell you what I want!” Ultra-Humanite growled, grabbing a innocent women in his huge hands. “I WANT DR. FATE!!”
“What ever for, you freakin’ chimpanzee?” Wildcat said, punching the Ultra-Humanite right in his face. Ultra-Humanite screamed, trying to grab the young superhero with his free hand, but the boxer was too fast for him. Sixty Minute Soldier rushed forward, using his super strength to pry his fingers off of the woman. She thanked Sixty hurriedly, before sprinting away. Huntress landed on top of the Ultra-Humanite, her job saving civilians finished. She grabbed a Batarang from her belt and dug it into the ape’s shoulder, smiling as he bled a little.
“GET THE HELL OFF ME, PUNY HUMAN!” He shouted, grabbing her by her arm and flinging her halfway down the street. She looked around for a way to break her fall, but she was helpless. Winged Victory whinnied as he saw his master’s teammate in trouble. He galloped forward and caught her on his back, like an expert.
“That’s my horse,” Shining Knight praised as he ran past Huntress with his sword in hand. He leapt and slashed through the Ultra-Humanite’s armor numerous times, exposing his whole body.
“Now, Vigilante!” He shouted to his best friend, moving out of the way of the albino ape’s path. Wildcat also pounced out of the way, as Vigilante fired two bullets through the air. The huge clouds of smoke certainly didn’t help his aim. One bullet missed, missing their villain’s oversized brain by mere millimetres, but the other bullet managed to shoot through his chest. Ultra-Humanite cursed as the pain went through him.
From a rooftop, a woman with long black hair watched the fight through a pair of binoculars. “This team seems pretty good, for a ‘Fog of War’ battle. Now all I have to do is wait for my opening and then attack...” she grabbed three small spheres from her pocket. “Hopefully, I won’t have to resort to my father’s old tricks for assistance.”
Robin sprinted towards the enemy as Huntress and Batwoman fired bolas at Ultra-Humanite’s feet. The ape began to topple, his balance finally disappearing as Robin jumped onto his stomach and pushed down. He quickly took a Batarang from his belt and held it at the ape’s neck. “Now tell me, Ultra-Humanite...why do you want Dr. Fate?”
“Because he and the pesky Justice Society of America ruined my plans and banished me to Hell!” He replied angrily. He tensed his leg muscles, the bola’s literally ripping apart. He punched Robin square in the face, earning himself a bloody fist. He cursed again as he clutched his chest. He flinched slightly as he pulled out the bullet, throwing it onto the floor. “Barely pierced my skin!” He mocked, running into a small electronics store on the corner of the street.
“A-After him!” Robin murmured, clutching his bloody face.
“Dick!” Batwoman gasped, rushing to her boyfriend’s side. “Are you okay? Here, let me help...”
“So now you show interest in me? Focus on the job, Batwoman,” he snapped. Batwoman’s eyes widened, as if she was truly sorry.
However, a large explosion grabbed the duo’s attention – also that the rest of the team had been blasted away from the electronics store and were now sporting various injuries.
“Tend to the wounded,” Robin told Batwoman, “I’m going in there to finish off that huge ape.”
Batwoman nodded, slowly getting up and going to her teammate’s aid. Robin ran into the electronics store, despite a dislocated bone in his nose, and a swollen eye. Once again, the Ultra-Humanite had completely destroyed the store. A small acne faced teenager sat in the corner, trembling. “I didn’t sign up for this!” He cried, escaping as Robin marched toward the out of character villain.
“Ultra-Humanite, this definitely isn’t your style. Unfortunately, Dr. Fate is away visiting some friends in the Middle East, and he won’t be back for a few more hours yet. Unfortunately for you, you’ll be in prison by then!”
“You will have to do, worthless human!” Ultra-Humanite scowled, picking up a computer and chucking it at the caped crusader. Robin dodged it with ease, firing a smoke bomb at Ultra-Humanite. “That buys me around ten seconds, max,” he thought to himself, using a grappling hook to swing across the shop near a plug socket.
Ultra-Humanite charged at him, choking along the way. Just as he was about to hit him, Robin grabbed a small toaster and smashed it over his head. Whilst he was still dazed, he quickly pulled a socket out of the wall, and pushed Ultra-Humanite against the wall. He thanked his rubber insulated suit as electric shocks burst through his foe’s body.
After around ten seconds of shocking him, he let him fall down in a heap. He untied his cape and caught the blood gushing from his nose, and began to walk out of the store, tired but triumphant. Suddenly, he was tackled to the floor, and sighed as he saw the hairy white arms pick him up. Ultra-Humanite aimed a fist at his head, when his eyes suddenly rolled into the back of his head. Robin gasped as he loosened his grip and fell onto the ground.
“Looks like you were in trouble there,” a woman grinned, “seriously, all you had to was locate his weak points and he would be down within seconds.”
“Two questions; where exactly is his weak point, and who are you?”
“The answer to question one is obvious; where every man’s weak point is.”
“Unconventional...perhaps borderline cheating...but it did the job,” Robin replied, as the woman smiled.
“And the answer to question two, should be obvious. Does my suit not remind you of anyone?”
Robin looked at her costume and smirked. “I’m guessing you’re a relative of some very intelligent man, the former Mr. Terrific?”
“You got that right,” she smiled, “except I go by the name Terrifica.”
“Terrifica, huh? It has a certain ring to it,” Robin remarked, as the duo left the store together. “Hey, where’s your spheres?” he laughed.
“I only resort to them in emergencies. If I had the choice of not using my father’s technology, I really wouldn’t.”
As Robin was about to reply, the site before him certainly took his breath away.
Batwoman was on the floor, in a small pool of blood. Huntress was groaning for help, clutching her ribs as her tattered cape lay on the opposite side of the street. Wildcat’s costume was cut open along his torso, with blood sticking to it. A shiny silver helmet was lying in a pool of vomit on the floor around him, while his hand was covered in his own blood.
“Lightspeed’s helmet?” Robin murmured to himself.
Vigilante, Shinking Knight and the Sixty Minute Soldier were grouped together in a circle, taking a defensive position. A blur was running around the trio, punching them and kicking them at the speed of light.
“You better get some of those spheres out quick, because this is definitely an emergency,” Robin warned Terrifica, “we’re about to face the fastest man alive.”
