Welcome to the Classic Comics Forum
Welcome to the most knowledgeable and friendly community for discussing classic comic books on the web. Please take a moment to review our community's rules, and then be sure to introduce yourself here.
1. This is a respectful community. Many members will tell you their main reason for coming here is the decency and politeness, even when folks disagree. Personal attacks, passive aggressiveness, just plain combative posts, and/or a general disregard for others will not be tolerated. If someone has offended you or another member, this does not entitle you to respond in kind. Take a deep breath, walk away from the keyboard for a few moments, and then politely inform them of how their actions are coming off offensively or use the "ignore" feature to disregard their future posts. If their behavior does not change, or if you witness a situation escalating, report the post, and all staff members will be immediately notified via both pm and e-mail. Please play nice; This is not your ordinary discussion community.
2. Going along with this, we ask that you not come here to badmouth other communities or persons outside of this community. Inevitably, someone else here has a stake in the argument over there, and bad blood spills over.
3. This is a family friendly and workplace safe community. While we have disabled the auto-censoring on this site out of respect for the maturity of this community, we expect you to practice discretion. Avoid cursing, explicit discussions, and graphic images unless you have an appropriate/tasteful reason to include them (quoting Harlan Ellison critiquing Michael Fleischer, etc). If you want to discuss content that is mature in nature or which may be offensive to some, we ask that you practice appropriate caution. Keep language family friendly, consider posting links with warnings as opposed to direct images, and be aware that there are others browsing who may be sensitive, surfing from work, or viewing with children.
4. Though the primary focus of this site is comic books (especially the oldies-but-goodies!), other subjects of discussion are welcome in the Community Discussion section. Please try to create general threads for off-topic interests (a thread for "classic sci-fi films" as opposed to a thread for "Just watched Day the Earth Stood Still", etc). We already have a Meanwhile... thread for random chit-chat that doesn't require its own thread. Had a bad day? Post about it there.
5. Consensus on this board is that a classic comic can be defined as any comic book, comic strip, or webcomic published ten or more years ago. Anything newer belongs in the Modern Comics Discussion area. If you want to discuss a series that began more than ten years ago but includes issues that are newer, it's fine in the Classic Comics Discussion. We are not sticklers so long as you make an effort to keep the discussion in our most beloved section focused on...you know...classic comic books.
6. All members are asked to please use spoiler tags for one month after the events occur when discussing specific plot points for comics and TV shows. For mediums such as films or novels, which have a longer shelf life, we kindly ask that you use spoiler tags for six months after the release date. The only exceptions to these two spoiler rules would be for specific threads which are openly labeled as containing spoilers directly in the title (for example, the All Purpose Batman Thread should be spoiler free for a month, but you could have a thread titled "Robin Rises: Spoilers!" for discussing a particular issue or series of issues where you want to discuss a shocking revelation while it's still current). Please be considerate and remember that, in addition to having many members who experience their media via DVR, Cable and Satellite On-Demand, Apple TV, Redbox, and Netflix, we have a large number of fluent English speaking members who are not, in fact, from the United States and, thus, get their television show episodes, movies, and even comics at different times than U.S. based members do. Though this should not be an issue when discussing classic comics, it's important to keep in mind in the "Beyond the Back Issues..." section.
An example of how to create a spoiler tag (replace {} with brackets):
{spoiler}I can't believe he died at the end!{/spoiler}
7. No hijacking other members' review threads. One of the forums most unique features is the wealth of well written and researched review threads that our members contribute. However, the majority of review threads are for one member alone to put down their thoughts on a particular series. While input from other posters is both welcomed and desired, there is a difference between commenting on the reviews, debating the points that the thread starter has made, posting interesting pieces of series-related info etc, and posting your own competing reviews within the thread. Lengthy replies to a review thread are fine, but if you're actually reviewing whole issues, with your own thoughts/ratings etc, then you will likely be stepping on the thread starter's toes, which violates rule number 1.
8. No spamming/advertising/promoting other forums. Posts that feature unsolicited advertisements for services, products, businesses and/or other web sites, or posts that are barely more than links to other blogs, are considered spam. It's fine to link to your blog in your signature, but your posts should contribute to a discussion and not just use our community as an advertising board.
9. Please no selling or buying of merchandise. Inevitably, a transaction goes badly, and that creates both tension in the community and legal problems for the website. It also invites people coming to the site strictly to hock their wares.
10. Be mindful of violating fair use copyright laws. Including images of comic book artwork in your posts is fine, as long as you do not post multiple pages of a copyrighted work. As a rule of thumb, the text relating to an image should be bigger/longer than the scan provided; often one or two panels is enough to illustrate your point. Entire scanned pages can be disruptive to the eye and to page load times.
11. We encourage you to express yourself with custom avatars and signatures. However, signatures should not exceed 900 x 200 pixels in size and should not be animated so as not to affect load times nor cause visual distraction.
We hope you enjoy yourself here and will jump right into the discussions! Our community is very welcoming to new posters
