Gotham City…
Helena Wayne didn’t blame Brendon for needing a respite from the pageant. Despite the fast pace, she knew sitting still wasn’t his idea of fun. Just then the announcer and the top 10 came back on stage. She could see Betty Kane-Parker shifting in her seat.
“Must be nervous. Either the wrong girls made the top 5 or she’s worried that Kitty Kat will show.”
The announcer began, “Here in random order are tonight’s top 5!”
The crowd began cheering.
‘First up, Italy!!!! Take your place, Brazil!!! You can relax now, Ireland!!! Only two more spots and one goes to Germany!!! And rounding out the top 5 is….Trinidad and Tobago!! There they are, tonight’s top 5! One of these lucky ladies will soon be wearing the Miss Universe crown!”
“Don’t be so sure!” a voice hissed.
The audience gasped as a woman in black appeared from nowhere and jumped on stage, shoving pageant contestants out of the way.
“Kitty Kat!” Helena said as she made her way to an exit. “Your break is over Brendon.” she thought as she looked for a place to change to the Huntress.
In the front row, Betty Kane-Parker grasped her husband’s arm. “She actually showed up! Excuse me dear, but I have to teach this woman a lesson!”
“Betty! No!” her husband the former Golden Eagle pleaded. “You haven’t been Bat-Girl or Flamebird in a long time….”
“Chuck’s right dear. Please don’t do anything rash.” Kathy Kane joined in.
“Don’t worry. I’m just going to make an appearance. I wouldn’t want to fight her and ruin my hair.” Betty said knowing full well she was lying. As she ran up the aisle, she bumped into Wayne Vale.
“I knew she’d show!” he said to Betty.
“Great work Wayne. Can’t talk now, I have to summon Bat-Girl. The REAL one. Be sure to get a good photo of her for the paper.”
“I will.” Wayne said as Betty ran away. “I’ll be sure to get your good side, Bat-Girl.” he smiled.
Some of the audience were leaving while others sat glued to their seats, fascinated by Kitty Kat. It had been several years since one of the Batman’s rogues had pulled such a stunt and several of the high society members were amused.
Kitty Kat shouted, “ Here I am Bat-Family! You challenged me to take the crown and I did! In fact I have two of them. Show yourselves so I can scratch your eyes out!!!!!!!!!”
The crowd erupted into applause.
“My goodness, Chuck! I think they believe this is part of the show.” Kathy said looking around the auditorium.
Meanwhile on the roof, Brenda was tending to Nightvision’s wound. He was a bit embarrassed as Brenda administered first aid. She was very quiet and he could tell she was not happy.
“Brenda, I--”
“I know. We haven’t exactly been on fire in the romance department lately. I noticed a change in you about the time Kitty Kat appeared. I had to follow you tonight to make sure it was indeed her and not Helena. Brendon….why? I saw her kiss you and you certainly didn‘t resist.” she asked.
“All I can do is apologize. I love you….I love you like nothing else.”
‘Do you?” she asked sarcastically.
The duo heard commotion coming from the theatre.
“Help me up…Kitty Kat’s going after the crown.” Nightvision said weakly. He tried to stand and fell forward.
“Uh uh, Brendon. You’re still bleeding. I’ll catch Kitty Kat. I have a bone to pick with her anyway.”
Brendon watched as the moonlight illuminated Brenda’s scuplted body. Within minutes she was in the figure hugging costume of the Blackbird.
“What was I thinking?” he thought to himself as he stared at Blackbird’s silouette.
“You stay here. I’ll make this quick and then we’ll finish this discussion.” she said.
He could tell he had hurt her, but still he couldn’t deny his infatuation with Kitty Kat.
Back in the auditorium, Kitty Kat was swinging her whip over her head. The stage had cleared and Kitty Kat was caressing the Miss Universe crown. Her eyes lit up as it sparkled in the stage lights.
“No one to challenge me? Gotham City, I think your protectors are full of baloney!” she laughed.
“That’s all you’ll be eating where you’re going!” came a female voice.
“You again? I should have known you wouldn’t be far behind that hunky friend of yours. Well, I made quick work of him and I’ll do the same for you!” Kitty Kat said, slipping the crown into a bag and attaching it to her golden belt.
“Nightvision? What did you do to him? Huntress demanded swinging her fist at Kitty Kat.
“Let’s just say I hope he doesn’t get razor burn!” Kitty Kat laughed as she ducked. She tripled somersaulted over Huntress’s head and landed behind her. Before Huntress could spin around, Kitty Kat kicked her in the back of the neck, dropping her to the ground. She grabbed Huntress’s dark hair and whispered in ear, “I know you’re HER daughter. She took my father and I’ll return the favor!”
“What are you talking about?” Huntress said, twisting her legs and knocking Kitty Kat back.
“You want to fight? GOOD!!!” Kitty Kat hissed, her lips snarled. Within seconds the two women were locked in combat, matching each other punch for punch.
“She’s like an animal. She should already be out--I will be soon if I don’t stop her.” Huntress thought, her head throbbing.
Just then a woman in red and yellow swooped from the rafters.
“Do not be afraid, citizens! Bat-Girl ---THE REAL ONE--is here!”
“Oh Betty.” Chuck said, burying his face in his hands, suddenly wishing he had his Golden Eagle armor.
“She looks so pretty! That’s her old Bat-Girl costume except it’s yellow where it used to be green! Bravo Betty, bravo!!” Kathy Kane clapped.
“I demand you return the Miss Universe crown at once!” Bat-Girl said, landing on the stage.
Wayne Vale stood at the stage’s base snapping away with his camera.
Huntress struggled with Kitty Kat, “Get out of here! This isn’t a game!”
Kitty Kat punched Huntress in the face, dazing her. “There! Your face will be blue and purple like your tacky costume!”
Kitty Kat smirked at Bat-Girl. ‘Well girl, don’t just stand there! Show me what you’ve got!”
“Hmph!” Bat-Girl sniffed reaching into her Bat-purse. She produced a bola and threw it towards Kitty Kat. She quickly jumped into the air and the bola went whizzing by, hitting Huntress’s legs instead. She was already woozy from Kitty Kat’s punch, and fell to her knees.
“I’ve had enough of this!” Kitty Kat snarled as she attacked Bat-Girl, claws flying. Bat-Girl punched back, but struggled against the younger Kitty Kat. In a turn of luck, Bat-Girl managed to land a punch to Kitty Kat’s stomach, knocking the wind out of her.
Kitty Kat grabbed her stomach and doubled over. Bat-Girl was stunned (and thankful) Kitty Kat was seemingly stopped. Ever the showoff, Bat-Girl walked over to the villainess and announced, “You see Gotham City? If not for the original Bat-Girl coming out of retirement this awful woman would have gotten away with her crime!”
“FOOL!” Kitty Kat screamed kicking Bat-Girl in the face, knocking her down.
“Betty!” Chuck yelled running to the stage. He felt a hand on his shoulder stopping him.
“Keep your seat sir, I’ll stop her.” It was Blackbird.
Chuck stood back as Blackbird charged Kitty Kat.
“How many of you stupid Bat-women are there?” Kitty Kat said, rolling her eyes.
“Not sure, but this bird will stop you.” Blackbird said.
“Well, you know how cats like to kill birds….” Kitty Kat said clawing at Blackbird’s face.
The two women rolled around on the floor, each punching and kicking.
Chuck made his way to Betty. “Have you lost your mind?” he demanded.
“Chuck, baby. Don’t worry. I owe that witch and I’m getting my crown back!” Bat-Girl said as she wobbly stood up.
Huntress had shaken off the blows from Kitty Kat and was ready to enter the fray.
“Brenda! I hope Brendon summoned her and he’s ok. The quicker we stop Kitty Kat the better I’ll feel.” Huntress thought as she pounced into the fight. In the blink of an eye, Bat-Girl was in the fight as well. Despite the odds being stacked against her, Kitty Kat was holding her own dodging punches and all manner of Bat-devices. Looking upward, she noticed a sky-light.
“Sorry ladies, I’ve had enough. All of this horseplay is murder on a girl’s hair.” Kitty Kat pointed her fist towards the skylight, a line releasing from one of her jeweled claws.
“She’s getting away!” Blackbird shouted. The three ‘Bat-women’ charged Kitty Kat as she catapulted upwards and smashed through the skylight laughing. Huntress, Blackbird, and Bat-Girl had all lunged at once and all three girl’s heads had smashed into one another as Kitty Kat was lifted into the air by her claw-line.
Each girl was rubbing her head.
“This is all your fault Bat-Girl! You should have left this to me and Blackbird! We could have caught Kitty Kat, and now thanks to you she’s gone!” Huntress said noticing a knot on her head.
“Oh shut up! I would have had her if she hadn’t surprised me with that kick.” Bat-Girl replied.
“You’re both wrong! I have personal reasons to get her and you both got in my way.” Blackbird said.
The girls all continued to bicker as a sleek, graceful figure lowered herself from the shattered skylight.
Her ears were irritated at the girls’ argument. A long purple-clad arm produced a whip and cracked it loudly over the trio’s head, quieting them.
“Well, well, well. I see three little girls who need to stop playing at being grown up crime fighters and go back to playing with their Barbies. I warn you girls, stay out of my way and let an adult handle this.” the voice hissed.
Huntress’s eyes widened. “Mother…..” she whispered.
“CATWOMAN!!!!!!!” Bat-Girl and Blackbird said in unison.
