Gotham City…
Betty Kane-Parker stormed down 6th Avenue, high heels clicking. She was fuming mad that Dick Grayson hadn’t done more to protect the Miss Universe crown. Betty was the only woman to win all three crowns offered by the Miss Universe organization-- Miss Teen USA, Miss USA, and Miss Universe. In fact when the previous owner passed away, he left specific instructions that Betty become the executive director and owner.
“Hmph. If I was still super heroing, this would never have happened.” she thought as she made her way to an exclusive Gotham City restaurant. She was seated on the patio where she talked to her Aunt Kathy on her diamond encrusted cell phone.
“Aunt Kathy, can you believe how shoddy that new Bat Girl is!” she huffed.
“I believe she calls herself the Hunter Woman or something droll such as that.” came the reply from Aunt Kathy.
“Well, at least the crown is insured, but it was the one I was crowned with! I wouldn’t expect a lout such as Dick Grayson to understand that! I don’t even know why I allowed my pageant to be held in Gotham City in the first place. This city has caused me nothing but heartache! First that red head comes along and takes my name! I was Bat-Girl first, you know!”
“I know dear.”
“And then, Dick passes me over for that four-eyed mousy librarian! Can you believe that!?”
“But, you certainly did much better dear. Chuck is so hunky--and that surfer lingo is so cute.” Kathy Kane affectionately referred to Betty’s husband Charlie Parker, as Chuck.
“Talking to you always makes me feel better, Aunt Kathy.”
Betty could tell someone was staring at her. “Aunt Kathy, I’d better go. Someone wants my autograph. She hung up her phone and smiled at a fresh faced young man.
“Mrs. Parker?” he asked.
“Why yes, but it’s Kane-Parker.” Betty smiled, tossing back her blonde hair.
“My name’s Wayne Vale.” the sandy haired man smiled.
“Oh yes, you’re Vicki’s son. You work for that silly little local paper.”
“Uh, it’s the Gotham Times, Mrs. Kane-Parker. Not quite the local penny saver.” the attractive young man replied.
Wayne Vale was indeed Vicki’s son. Vicki had become pregnant and never revealed who her son’s father was. She named her son Wayne, as a dig at Selina Kyle. Vicki never quite got over being dumped for the former criminal.
“Mind if I ask you a few questions?” he asked.
“On of off the record, haha!” Betty laughed.
“I’d like to ask you your thoughts on the new Catwoman and how she stole the Miss Universe crown.”
“Well, let me tell you this! If this had been a few years ago, this new Catwoman would never had gotten away with this! When I was a teenager, Batwoman and Bat-Girl---the real one!-- would have stopped her. Since I left Gotham and Batman retired, you can tell these…these…wannabes just aren’t up to stopping crime. --you can put that in your article-- and I dare this new Catwoman to show her face at the pageant! The original Bat-Girl just might show up to teach her a thing or two!”
“Mrs. Parker, what if I really talked this up……and generated some interest in your pageant? What if I wrote Gotham’s heroes dare Catwoman to show her face?”
“Well, the original Bat-Girl is a close personal friend of mine and I assure you she’ll be at the pageant ready to teach that Catwoman rip-off a thing or two!”
“Mrs. Parker, I think you’ll like tomorrow’s headline.” Wayne smiled.

The next morning at Wayne Manor, Selina Kyle-Wayne enjoyed a leisurely breakfast with her daughter. Alfred brought Selina the morning paper.
“Anything interesting?” Helena asked.
“I’ll say!” her mother said angrily. “Look at this!”
Selina passed her daughter the paper. Helena read aloud, “Gotham’s heroes challenge new Catwoman to steal the new Miss Universe crown.”
‘Look at the writer…that tramp Vicki’s son!”
‘Mother, I know I didn’t issue a challenge to this woman, and neither did Brendon. I think this is hyperbole to sell papers. And look….the only person quoted in the article is Betty Kane.”
“The former Bat-Girl aka Flamebird? I would expect nothing less from that air headed socialite. She’s probably drumming up interest in her stupid pageant. If I wanted to, I could slip in there and take the crown myself!”
“MOTHER!!”
“Don’t you mother me! I’ve had enough of that new Catwoman trashing my name! I know I promised your father Catwoman was retired, but I’ve had it!”
“Mother, I’m going to the pageant. If this new woman tries anything, I’ll get her. I don’t like her using the Catwoman name, besides I think she calls herself Kitty Kat.” Helena said, remembering her own encounter with the new criminal.
“How low class.” Selina mused, calming down. “Helena, you don’t know how hard I worked to prove to your father and this city that I had reformed. I even helped him make Gotham City a safe place. It just makes me so mad for someone to use my old motif for crime, when I worked so hard to have the public remember Catwoman in a good way.”
“I promise you mother. I’ll stop her.”
Selina left for a shopping date with Lois Lane-Kent.
Helena called Brendon Grayson.
The two of them made plans to attend the Miss Universe pageant.
“I’m sure she read that article and will show herself.” Brendon said.
“Oh you know she will. Does Brenda want to come with us?” Helena asked.
“No, she..she already has plans that night. Plans that can’t be broken.” Brendon said.
He hung up the phone and gazed out the window. Kitty Kat had not been far from his thoughts. She was so alive…so vibrant.
“Who was that?” Brenda asked.
“It was just Helena. Nothing important.” he said to his live in girlfriend, also known as Blackbird.
“What’s with you? You’ve been so quiet…so withdrawn lately. The only time you seem happy is when you’re going out on patrol. You know, you’ve been this way since that night with the new Catwoman.”
“Kitty Kat, Brenda.”
“Whatever. I hope you aren’t following your uncle’s infatuation.”
Brendon was surprised at how perceptive she was. “Of course not! I’m just mad she got away.”
He kissed Brenda and left the room.
“Liar.” Brenda thought.
************************************************************************
“Well, well, well!” Kitty Kat laughed. “Gotham City’s heroes have challenged us!”
Her brother Fabri smiled. “They aren’t too heroic if you ask me.”
“You’re right Fabri. And look here….there’s a new…even prettier crown for us!”
“What about re-creating Catwoman’s crime spree?” her brother asked.
“Scrap that plan. We’re going straight to the top. Get your tux out. We’re going to the Miss Universe pageant!”
************************************************************************
A few nights later, the Gotham City Civic Center was alive with all the Miss Universe buzz. The show had sold out thanks to curiosity seekers wondering if Kitty Kat would show up.
Helena Wayne and Brendon Grayson made their way to their seats. Brendon noticed a beautiful blonde woman--the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen--take a seat just a few aisles down. She was escorted by a tall tan man. Her movements were familiar.
“It’s her….” he thought to himself. He decided to keep this information quiet and studied the woman.
Helena Wayne was busy studying the crowd. She saw Kathy Kane all decked out in diamonds. Vicki Vale and her son were present as well. “Good thing mother decided to stay in Metropolis. I don’t think she could stand being under the same roof as some of dad’s old flames.”
She then saw Charley and Betty Parker (Kane-Parker, if you asked Betty) being seated in the front row.
The pageant was soon underway. Helena noticed the crown in a glass case to the side of the stage.
“They certainly mean to lure Kitty Kat out.” she thought.
Soon the top 15 was narrowed to the top 10. Swimsuit was out of the way and up next was evening gown. Helena was surprised at how much she enjoying the evening.
Brendon noticed the blonde woman whisper something to her escort. She left her seat and made her way up the aisle. She was wearing a black strapless evening gown and a simple diamond bracelet. Her hair was up in a French-twist and mascara made her brilliant green eyes stand out.
She passed his aisle and Brendon told Helena, “I’m bored beyond belief. I’m going to walk around…get some air.”
“Ok, but hurry back! Kitty Kat’s bound to show herself during the crowning.”
Brendon made his way to the lobby and saw the blonde woman scurry up the emergency stairs. He followed after her, his brow sweating. He found a broom closet and changed to Nightvision. Soon he was on the roof where he saw the blonde woman. Sure enough, she was Kitty Kat. She had just zipped her suit up and placed her mask on her flawless face.
“Couldn’t resist, could you?” his voice boomed.
Kitty Kat spun around. “Ah, it’s you…the hitchhiker. We’ve got to stop meeting like this.” Despite being agitated that Nightvision had found her, she was strangely excited at the same time.
He walked towards her. She was smiling ear to ear, her hands resting on her hips. Her suit hugged her figure and her green eyes flashed in the moonlight.
“If you try to steal the crown, you’ll get caught.” he said.
“I guess you are the one who challenged me in that rag of a newspaper.”
“No, I just got lucky to find you here.”
‘I think I’m the lucky one.” she said walking closer to him, unsure what she was going to do.
“I can make it easy for you….if you’ll surrender and turn the crown in.” he said, his pulse quickening.
“oh…you can? I…I…would like that. Sometimes I just can’t help myself. I …..I need help.” Kitty Kat said burying her head in Nightvision’s muscular chest.
He found himself wrapping his arms around her. “Don’t cry…I can make sure you get the help you need. I promise.”
“You’d do that for me?” she said looking up, her eyes welling with tears.
“Yes.”
Nightvision was surprised when Kitty Kat planted the most explosive kiss he had ever felt on his lips. He kissed her back and drew her close to him. He felt her nails making their way up his spine as he kissed her even more passionately.
Just then he heard a loud ‘SNIKT” and felt a warm liquid coming from the back of his neck.
“Wha…” he gasped coming to his senses.
“Sucker!” Kitty Kat giggled as she kicked Nightvision in his most sensitive area, dropping him to his knees.
“Don’t you ever follow me around ever again or it won’t be the back of your neck I rip out!” she hissed leaping from the building.
“Wait!” Nightvision yelled trying to get to his feet.
He heard a woman’s footsteps behind him.
“How will I explain this to Helena?” he thought.
“I felt bad following you here tonight. I thought another woman was involved. In fact I suspected Helena. But now I see why you’ve been so distant.”
Nightvision held the back of his bloody neck. He turned around.
“Brenda.” he said quietly.
