Metropolis: Outside the Headquarters of the Legion of Super-heroes (A.D. 3001)
Green Lantern Alan Scott was a little overwhelmed by his day. It began in Slaughter Swamp on a JSA mission to take down Solomon Grundy, but now he found himself nearly 1,000 years in the future with two other men who also claim to be Green Lantern and a civilian with a flight ring who claimed to be a member of the Legion of Super-heroes. Before today, he was the only Green Lantern that ever existed. “How did this happen? Who are these men?” he thought to himself. Alan Scott was raised in an orphanage and never related well to many people. The engineer was the sole survivor of a horrible train accident, which forever changed his life. His first allies were other masked men like himself who together formed the Justice Society of America. Doiby Dickles was his first true friend. Alan’s heart was still heavy with disappointment from the souring of his relationship with the love of his life, Irene Miller. Meeting these other “Green Lanterns” sparked both curiosity and hope in the JSA member. “Could these men be my descendants?” he wondered.
“So, what is the plan here, gentlemen?’ asked Hal Jordan.
“We have to find my…we have to find Sonic Boom,” answered Daniel Jordan. “Chronos has kidnapped her.
“I know exactly where she is,” informed Rond Vidar as he raced towards the clouds. All three Green Lanterns kept up with him with ease.
“Where is she?” asked the pastor.
“Chronos has taken her to the moon,” answered the Legionnaire. “Let’s get some distance between ourselves and Legion headquarters first and then I will tell you more about it.”
Once the group had scaled the clouds, an emerald glow emanated around Rond Vidar. “Let me brief you. I am the Green Lantern of this era,” said their host as his three companions gawked in surprise. “Unfortunately, Green Lanterns have been outlawed in this space sector. I use the ring with extreme caution and only when absolutely necessary. Even my teammates in the Legion are unaware of my membership in the corps.”
Hal Jordan had journeyed to this century before, but was unaware of the horrific embargo against Green Lanterns. “So, basically we’re all breaking the law here! Isn’t there anything that can be done?”
“Maybe sometime in the future,” answered Mr. Vidar, “but for now we need to formulate a plan to defend ourselves from the science police. They will surely be on our trail soon.” Turning to Daniel Jordan the Legionnaire continued, “Before Chronos disappeared my ring got a tracer on him. I suggest we divide into two teams. Two of us will fight the science police and lead them on a wild goose chase while the other goes after your teammate.”
“Sounds like a good plan,” said Hal authoritatively.
“I would like to take Alan Scott with me and go after Sonic Boom,” said Daniel. The young Titan was tempted to work with this younger version of his father, but felt it prudent that he spend as little time with Hal Jordan as possible in order to avoid accidentally revealing their relationship as father and son.
Rond Vidar was pleased with this suggestion as he was most thrilled with the idea of working with history’s greatest Green Lantern. “Good idea! Hold still for a moment while I download my ring’s tracer on Chronos’ location to your ring.”
Alan Scott pondered on how the bald Green Lantern from the future knew his name. He also wondered what this “Green Lantern Corps” was, but decided to save his questions for later.
Space
Rheesa Bahi-an was proud to be on her first space mission. She had graduated from her course with top honors and was accepted into the Science Police with the academy’s highest recommendation. She could feel the nervous energy coursing through her body as she flew side-by-side via super-turbo jet pack with her fellow soldiers on this assignment, all of whom were tested and tried veterans. According to their captain, the mission was to escort a group of Green Lanterns out of the space sector. If the invaders resisted they were to be arrested.
As the team left the earth’s outer atmosphere they noticed a brilliant green glow in space. Rheesa’s heart rate increased dramatically as she realized that the report of only four Green Lanterns was horribly incorrect.
“There must be over one hundred of them!” she thought. Though her heart raced wildly the new graduate remembered the reaction principle she had been taught as a freshman: Always look around to see the reaction of your superiors to avoid succumbing to fear. Raising her weapon toward the army of verdant warriors, Rheesa took a quick glance at her comrades to find that all of them were in various stages of panic.
By the thirty-first century, the people of earth were well aware that there were many non-humanoid and strange creatures sharing the universe with them. But some of these Green Lanterns looked terrifyingly alien.
The leader of the Science Police mission signaled the Green Lanterns to turn around and leave the space sector.
Droplets of perspiration ran down Rheesa’s forehead and back as the grinning aliens continued their advance. Then one by one the science police began shooting at the corps, with terrifying results. The brigade of alien creatures began flying about like a swarm of space bees. The newest member of the Science Police could have sworn that some of their adversaries had been hit, but they appeared not even be phased! Some of the creatures dared to fly in between the members of the Science Police.
Two monstrous looking Green Lanterns approached Rheesa and began squirting a nasty looking green ooze at her. The young policewoman screamed in terror.
Then a human looking Lantern with red hair ran circles at super-speed around each individual policeman, while the one that looked like a giant moth hovered above their heads. Then one of them wrote a message, attached it to an arrow, and shot it to the wolf looking one who was salivating and licking his lips as he approached the captain of the Science police.
The wolf-like Green Lantern hung its head in disappointment. The moth-like Green Lantern picked up the message and read it too. Then the corps flew away into the distance at super-speed, apparently unaware that they had left the note behind.
Rheesa herself picked up the message, quickly read it, and handed it to her captain. The leader of the mission read its words, “NO EATING! Continue on into space. We don’t want to hurt the Science Police. We only need to keep them unaware of our true mission on planet Vulcan.”
Having read the message, the captain divided his team. One group was assigned to follow the trail of the Green Lanterns, a second was to journey on to Neptune on an exploratory mission, while a few were to report back to Science Police headquarters for further analysis of the message. Rheesa was relieved to be assigned to the group that was to head back to headquarters.
Once the Science Police were at a distance, Hal Jordan and Rond Vidar came out from the hiding place on a small asteroid where they had orchestrated the pseudo-war.
“That’ll teach the sprocking Science Police not to mess with the Green Lantern Corps!” exclaimed Rond Vidar.
“That was the most fun I have had in a long time!” said Hal, still under cloaking protection provided by his ring.
“Well, it was a great idea,” remarked Rond. “I couldn’t have done it without your help. Where did you get all the ideas for those different creatures?”
“Those are some of my best friends back in my time. By the way, I don’t think we have had the chance to do this formally,” said the emerald guardian with an extended hand, “Hal Jordan.”
“Rond Vidar,” answered the Legionnaire as he shook the hand of his favorite historical figure. “It is both a privilege and an honor to work with you.”
Space: Near the Moon
“It seems that I am at a disadvantage, here,” began Alan Scott as he and his companion flew neared the secret lair of Chronos.
“What do you mean?” asked Daniel Jordan.
“Before today I was the only man I knew crazy enough to go by a silly name like Green Lantern, a name I myself came up with because of the form of the battery by which my ring gets its power…and now it seems that there are others like me in the future with the same name and rings. On top of that, you called me by my name,” said earth’s first green guardian.
Daniel Jordan swallowed hard and prayed silently for wisdom in how to answer this hero from the past.
“I understand that you are from the future,” continued the engineer. “Do I know you? Are you my…
…are we related?”
“What? No,” said the young Titan quickly, “but your example has inspired many. Until today I never realized just how many. It seems there is even a Green Lantern here in this age. Imagine that! There are still Green Lanterns a thousand years in the future!”
“That is another thing,” replied the JSAer. “I distinctly heard the other two Green Lanterns speak of a Green Lantern Corps.”
Daniel was a firm believer in both honesty and respect, but was starting to get a headache over this. “Mr. Scott? I am sorry for being so careless with my mouth. I have never been in a situation like this before and don’t even know what I should or shouldn’t say. Can I just tell you how honored I am to work with you, thank you for your example, and ask you for your help? This mission is of utmost importance.”
A few moments passed before Alan Scott replied. “This girl we are trying to save, who is she?”
“Her name is Di Di. Her codename is Sonic Boom. She is my teammate,” said the pastor softly.
“Teammate. Riiiiight,” answered the veteran Green Lantern with a smile. “Well, if I am not mistaken, that building down there is where Chronos has her. Let’s go save your teammate
The Moon: The Secret Lair of Chronos
Her father called it ‘playing possum. The Green Arrow never gave up. Even when the bad guys had him down he would feign either unconsciousness or death. Then when the bad guys let their guard down, the emerald archer would silently listen and gather information until it was time to act. In the end Oliver Queen always came out the victor.
Di Di Queen was like her mother in many ways, most of all was in her great love for her father. Though she treasured his every word, she had not yet needed to put them into practice before now. In her two years of working with the Birds of Prey and the Titans of Justice, Sonic Boom had rarely come across a situation in which she felt that she was at a disadvantage. But while pretending to be asleep she had learned many things that led her to believe she was in greater danger than she had ever faced before. She had been kidnapped by a time villain and taken more than nine hundred years into the future. If that weren’t enough, she was being held in chains in a secret lair on the moon! But she refused to give up hope.
[glow=yellow,2,300]Deet deet…deet deet…[/glow]
Chronos spoke into a device that reminded Di Di Queen of a cell phone, “I told you not to disturb me unless there was a problem!
…Yes, I already know that the Legion recruited all of those teams from the past. I was there, remember?
…That’s impossible! No one knows about my secret workshop here, especially not the stupid Science Police!”
The blonde bombshell was intrigued by this conversation. Perhaps the cavalry was on its way. Di Di squinted her eyes to get a better focus on the strange looking device her captor was tinkering with.
“Well, what else do you have to report?” asked the gaudily colored villain.
“…they’re chasing the Green Lanterns? Why?
…WHAT!?!” Chronos ran across the room and looked out the sole window of his lunar hideout.
“How many of them are there?”
“Contact all of the other teams and have them report to the moon to fight the Green Lanterns. I cannot be stopped now that I am so close. I just have a few adjustments to make and I will be ready to retrieve the final elements that will make me lord and master of all time!”
Sonic Boom had heard enough. The time to act was now. Di Di knew that her mother was much more experienced and qualified to pull the stunt she was about to try, but the little experience she had at spot-sonics, as her mother called it, would just have to do. If she made a mistake it would most likely be her last, as the small workshop on the moon would certainly be damaged leaving both Chronos and herself exposed to the moon’s surface. The blonde bombshell took a very deep breath, held her lips together tightly, and aimed for the device in Chronos’ grip.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! KRASH!
Though wounded from the Titan’s canary cry, Chronos quickly picked himself up and inspected the damage. Fortunately, the device had caused no breakage in the wall of the space station. However, the device that was imperative to retrieving the time elements from Sonic Boom’s bloodstream had crashed into and destroyed the machinery he had spent so many months building. The time villain ripped his mask off in rage and stomped towards the daughter of Green Arrow and Black Canary.
“You’ve ruined EVERYTHING! It’s all destroyed! Do you have any idea how long it took me to prepare for this? It will take MONTHS to rebuild!”
“You didn’t think that I was going to just sit here like Rapunzel waiting to be rescued, now did you?” asked Sonic Boom victoriously.
Then the attention of both villain and heroine was diverted to the darkening of the room from the green glow coming from without the window.
SMASH!! An iridescent giant green hand tore the door away as Daniel Jordan flew into the room.
“Right on cue!” exclaimed Sonic Boom. “Hey, Prince Charming! Can you free me from these bonds?”
Daniel Jordan sighed in relief as two hands shot forth from the emerald ring of the Titan of Justice. One formed a fist and smashed Chronos into the space station wall. The other gently removed the metal bands which held Sonic Boom on the table she had been entrapped on.
The daughter of Dinah Queen leaped into the air and landed in a martial arts stance as Chronos flew out the doorway.
“Di Di, stay here,” pleaded her boyfriend. “There is no oxygen outside.” A tank of oxygen appeared on the back of the beauty’s jacket as Green Lantern rushed out of the building.
By the time the masked pastor caught up with Chronos, the fight had already begun. Chronos and Alan Scott were shooting blasts at one another. Daniel Jordan joined his fellow Green Lantern and shouted, “We have to stop him! He has been chasing us for quite some time now. He won’t stop until he gets what he wants!”
“Follow my lead,” commanded earth’s first Green Lantern.
An burst of energy shot forth from Alan Scott’s ring and created a series of giant grenade-like mechanisms near Chronos. The blasts created a series of fireworks that lit the entire sky. Then a beam from Daniel’s ring formed an enormous container of boiling green liquid inches below the villain. A giant flyswatter then came from the purple-caped hero and started batting Chronos. Then green space cobras coiled around the legs and arms of the time villain. Next, a giant creature with the body of a man and a head of a lion violently ripped off Chronos’ uniform and gear. An oxygen bubble then formed around the helpless and humbled man, who was left with nothing but boxer shorts and a bracelet.
“I think we got ‘im,” said Alan Scott with a wink. “Now, why don’t you introduce me to this special teammate of yours we just saved.”
“You idiots think you have won?” shouted Chronos with a raised fist. “I can still travel through time by activating my --“
“NUCLEUS! NOW!” shouted Daniel as a beam of energy shot from his power ring to the villain’s bracelet.
A look of horror came across Chronos’ face as his bracelet shattered before his eyes. “NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!” he cried.
“Chronos, I’d like to introduce you to the secret weapon of the Titans of Justice,” said the emerald Titan, “Nucleus, the world’s smallest super-hero.”
Nucleus grew to normal size and stowed the silvery dust from the crushed bracelet in his belt compartment. “At your service!”
Alan Scott looked at his comrade in surprise, “You mean he has been traveling with you this whole time?”
“Yup,” replied Daniel. “The stakes were high in this case and I needed an extra edge. Now let’s go rescue my damsel in distress.”
Epilogue 1: Legion Headquarters
Zatanna scanned the congregation of heroes that had returned from their successful missions. Sargona stood beside her and commented, “You know, this has been one of the best days of my life. I have always idolized you. Working with you has been like a dream come true.”
Zatanna gave her new friend a hug and replied, “I hope it’s only the first of many chances we have to work together. It's like having a sister!”
Across the room, Lady Light sat near the table of sweets prepared by some of the female members of the Legion. The beautiful Asian hoped that no one had noticed she had taken four desserts. The Titan with a sweet tooth had never tasted such exotic delicacies in all her life. She was tempted to take another, but was feeling a bit shy.
“Care for a treat?” asked a familiar voice with a southern drawl.
Lady Light looked up to see the smiling face of her teammate Atmosphere. He bore a saucer in each hand and offered one of them to her.
“Why, I think I will have one after all,” said the mistress of light with a sheepish grin.
Everyone’s heads turned as they heard the sound of a jet landing just outside the building. Soon, Wonder Man and Jemstone entered the headquarters.
Jerrica ran towards Hippolyta while Scott scanned the room and walked towards Timber Wolf and Dream Girl.
“So, how did everything go? Is Sonic Boom alright?” asked the Amazonian prince.
“Yes,” replied Timber Wolf. “She is in Brainiac 5’s lab with Mon-El and your team’s Green Lantern.”
“Brainy built another one of his amazing inventions,” explained Dream Girl.” He will make sure that Chronos will never bother Sonic Boom again.”
Epilogue 2: The Lab of Brainiac 5
“Thank you for your help,” said Sonic Boom to Brainiac 5 as she stepped off the table.
“Are you okay?” asked Daniel Jordan in concern.
“Yes, I didn’t even feel a thing,” she said in reply.
“These…elements are fascinating,” said Brainiac 5 as he studied the chronal substance that his invention removed from Sonic Boom. “Still, its best that we destroy it. This stuff has already caused enough harm. Mon-El?”
“Everyone step back,” warned the Daxamite as he concentrated. Reddish beams shot forth from his eyes and evaporated the liquid substance.
Both Sonic Boom and Green Lantern breathed a sigh of relief. The nightmare that began in S.T.A.R Labs Tower was now finally over. Shadow Lass entered the room and walked directly to Mon-El, who put his arm around her.
“Thank you,” said Daniel Jordan with an extended hand toward the red-and-blue clad hero.
“I apologize for confusing you earlier,” said Mon-El as he shook the emerald gladiator’s hand. “I realize now that the first time I met you was in my past, but in your future.”
Green Lantern stood silently with a raised eyebrow. After a few moments he said, “Then I’ll look forward to meeting you again.”
Epilogue 3
Rond Vidar was glad to take monitor duty. It was sad that the JLA, JSA, and the Titans of Justice had to return home. But he would always cherish the memory that had met Alan Scott and Daniel Jordan and even got to work with Hal Jordan. He smirked at the memory of the terrified faces of the Science Police. He was relieved that his identity as Green Lantern was still intact. Not even one of his teammates had figured out his secret. He heard footsteps and turned to see Mon-El walking towards him with arms crossed.
“I have already come in contact with the Titans of Justice before,” began Mon-El, “but the heroes I met before were different members of their team. The only one I recognized was Daniel Jordan. Until today, I didn’t even realize that he had ever been a Green Lantern.”
“Me either,” commented Rond Vidar.
“Okay, Vidar: Spill it,” said the Daxamite.
“Spill what?” replied Rond innocently.
“What was the big deal with you and the Lanterns? Spill it,” demanded Mon-El.
“It’s nothing really, began the Legionnaire. “How would you feel if your ancestors showed up from the past and were in imminent danger?”
“What are you talking about?” asked his caped teammate in surprise.
“…I’m their direct descendant,” said Rond bluntly.
“Whose direct descendant?” asked Mon-El in surprise.
“Isn’t it obvious?” asked Rond Vidar as he walked away with a smile on his face.
