I find "Batgirl's Costume Cut-Ups" to be hilarious. Batgirl isn't doing anything wrong, it's just the perceptions of the male heroes. Have you gotten to the one where the feminists are picketing Batman because he won't marry Batgirl? That one cracks me up too. It makes no sense. Well, she tried to make up for it...

Wow... times sure do change! That sounds pretty funny...I'm sure it's in there (it goes up to like 1974)

Another really good one in that Batgirl collection is that JLA story where Batgirl is the JLA's only hope against Queen Bee!
I read that for the first time early this year (my library system has that Batgirl Showcase) and it was the first time I ever saw Queen Bee. I can hardly tell you how much I love Queen Bee. She just totally kicks ass and doesn't care one bit that she makes absolutely no sense as a character.
This is why I love the DC Silver Age so much. Between Queen Bee and Catman and Lois Lane, Queen of the Leopards, and the Revolt of the Girl Legionnaires and Mouse Man, I'm always finding new stories to be amazed at.

That's next on the docket, I think (the next one is definitely a JLA issue)... the cover promise some serious Silver Age weirdness!

I have quite a few of the originals from the Batgirl Showcase volume. The Batgirl-Supergirl Plot, Brave and Bold #78, several issues of Detective, Batman #197 (with Catwoman!).
I had the Batgirl Showcase volume from the library earlier this year and I really enjoyed seeing the stories I hadn't read yet. But now I'm thinking about those stories again and I'd really like to read some of them again (especially that JLA appearance) so I've requested it from the library system. I can hardly wait!

Detective Comics 371 'Batgirl's Costume Cut ups' Fox/Kane ... Then a bad guy tossed mud at her, and she brushes it off. The horror! Anyway, the end would have made Lorna proud... she rips her tights on purpose and distracts the crooks with her lovely legs... the end! Sid Greene inked this story. I always felt his inks made black costumes/black tights--in particular Batgirl's and Green Lantern's--look like they were unravelling (when I mentioned this on another board, someone else termed it "woolly"). Here though the unravelling effect fits right in!

JLA #60 'Winged Warriors of the Immortal Queen' fox/Sekowsky Zazzala is back, and she's foiled the JLA's previous attempt at keeping her from immortality... but that immortality has come at a price.. she's becoming immobile. .. that seems to happen alot in the DCU. Anyway, she tries to turn the JLA into drone bees to get the ingredient she needs to reverse the immortality. Her plan fails on Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman, but she adjusts her rod and is able to capture the rest of the league. Batgirl, who happened to be tailing Batman at the time he was shrunk, follows him, and ends up fighting the miniature, bee-sized, brainwashed JLA (which was highly awesome). She loses, though, and joins the bee club. After that, it's pretty much a standard JLA story... they break into teams, find stuff, and cure Queen Bee. She double crosses them, Atom uses nonsensical DC science to save the day.. the end. Not a great story, but the Batgirl part was epic.... I mean, check this out.. just this splash was worth the price of admission! Incidently, Sekowsky's Batgirl seems alot younger to me.. probably just a style thing.

I love the way she's using the Atom like a baton to hit the Flash! Ha ha! Take that, Flash!

I couple other things I thought of why looking at this again...
When did Green Arrow and Green Lantern start finishing each others thoughts? It seems like they thought they couldn't possibly have a panel with no words (though it would be quite appropriate here).
Also, I forgot to mention the last page... it's a very Bendis-like fan troll! The mention over the course of the story that The Queen's Magno-Rod thingy uses Green Lantern energy, but doesn't have the yellow weakness.
After the good guys win, Hal is very excited to use the ring to analyze why so he can overcome it too.. and it immediately blows up in his face, a la Looney Tunes.
( can't find the panel to post, sadly)

One of the great things about getting actual old comics (as opposed to reading reprints) is all the extra material that you seldom see in a reprint collection. Seeing the advertisements is like opening a time capsule of the country's cultural past. And the house ads, those are great. And then there's the letters pages, which are usually fun and interesting, but sometimes you come across something unexpected and special.
I got a decent G copy of Detective Comics #376 (spine roll!) last week, and guess what? The letters page (Batman's Hot-Line) is completely devoted to Detective Comics #371, the issue that featured "Batgirl's Costume Cut-Ups"! And again guess what? The first letter is from Irene Vartanoff!
Irene Vartanoff was a prolific letter writer in the 1960s and she's still around, still writing about comics on her blog.
The editorial comment refers to her as a "femmefan."
Her letter starts out: "Oh, no! This is too much! When I saw the cover of Detective 371, with its dramatic scene (notice the sarcasm) showing Batgirl contemplating a run in her tights, I was ready to commit hari-kari."
But she changes her tune in the next paragraph: "'Batgirl's Costume Cut-Ups' turned out to be fantastic, instead. Without proving that she is one dumb cluck of a cute chick, Batgirl managed to have one heck of a hilarious adventure! Thank goodness!"
The next two letters are not so enthusiastic. I've selected a few excerpts:
"... GOOD GRIEF! A girl who wants to be a crime-fighter doesn't go around screaming when she sees someone in danger; she does something about it! The whole story seemed to have stepped straight from the Batman-TV show, camp and all." - Mary Ann Held, Lodi, N.J.
From the next letter:
"You are unfair, unjust, biased, prejudiced and downright woman-hating! If "Batgirl's Costume Cut-Ups" wasn't a direct "cut" at us girls, I'm Light Lass! Who does author Fox Think he is - a female psychologist?"
And it ends: "Print this, you anti-feminists!" - Selina Zane, Phoenixville, Pa.
The other two letters are positive, but one of them tries to make a dumb point that Batgirl is way too athletic and wouldn't have such nice legs. They would have too much muscle on them. So Batgirl's legs would look like the legs of Juliet Prowse! (That's his example of legs that wouldn't look nice - Juliet Prowse!) The editor pounces on this (rightly in my opinion): "Sorry, Mike, kiddo - but the legs of Juliet Prowse are regarded as among the most sensational in Show Biz and otherwise. All of which leaves you without a leg to stand on!" - Editor

Yeah, I agree! I love reading old letter columns and such... it really adds to the experience. I've got a few odds and ends, but not much DC (hence getting a bunch of showcases and this thread)... some day, though Thanks for sharing! Clearly, the 1st writer gets it (at least, is on my wavelength).... though I can't deny that it felt a bit Adam West-y.
