Heh... I enjoyed reading and, and feel like it was a worthwhile purchase, yes. It didn't make me want to run out and finish the run, though If I find it cheap, I may get it one day. I have so many other reads that have my attention right now. But I am definitely interested if for nothing other than the art, the outfits, and the idea of her owning a boutique (which IS odd to me).

World's Finest #76 Hamilton/Swan 'When Gotham Challenged Metropolis' A big Electronics convention is trying to pick were to go, and they can't decide between Gotham and Metropolis, so they decide to see which hero can do more civil services in 24 hours. They switch cities (to make it fair) and proceed to do stuff. Batman seems especially determined, and Lois is wondering what the deal is. It turns out that the featured experiment was putting out Kryptonite rays, and Batman was trying to make sure it happened in Gotham so it wouldn't either mess Superman up, or reveal his weakness. Superman causes a recount when he reveals he fixed the Batcave... and it turns out to be a tie. Luckily, the Kyptonite energy experiment ends up failing, so the convention splits time between the two cities, courtesy of the Man of Steel carrying the Gotham convention hall to Metropolis half way through. Personally, Superman's good deeds were WAY better (he is Superman, after all) but they were grading on Quantity, not quality Pretty fun story. World's Finest #77Hamilton/Swan 'The Super Batman' Both Superman and Batman are on the trail of Professor Pender, who hasa ray gun that can suck away Superman's powers and give them to himself. Luckily, Batman gets in the way of the ray as he busts in, so we end up with Super Batman. He helps set up Superman with a Super-Cave and a Super-Mobile so he can run down the thugs and find him. Lois is suspicious that Superman isn't doing anything Super. Meanwhile, Batman gets run ragged in Gotham doing Super-things. Finally, Superman finds some thugs that know he's powerless, but luckily, he still has his invulnable uniform, so that saves him. It also reveals Prof. Pender really blasted him with Kyptonite dust... so his Ray just gave temporary Super-powers. Supes deduces where the hideout is, and they take him out as Batman's powers fade. Lois is sure they swapped places to confuse the bad guys, and runs with it. The End.. I know like 1/3 of these stories involve switches like this, but this one was really awesome.. one of my favorites so far! They did a great job showing Batman using superpowers his own way, and Superman investigating.. very cool.

World's Finest #78 Hamilton/Sprang 'When Superman's Identity is Exposed' This is a classic in Super-dickery... someone is plastering all over Metropolis that Superman is really Clark Kent! So the Man of Steel calls Batman to investigate. While in Metropolis, Batman sees a headline about how he's furiously tracking the mob, but figured the commissioner is just covering his absence. Nope, actually Superman did it himself, because he though Batman couldn't handle the mob, so he created an excuse to get him t Metropolis so he could go to Gotham and pretend to be Batman and clean up for him. Somehow Batman doesn't sock him for it. Never mind poor Lois and her head exploding... though one does wonder how much she does actually like Clark, if she can't tell when someone is impersonating him. World's Finest #79 'Three Magicians of Bagdad' Hamilton/Sprang I guess they really liked Aladdin in the DC offices. IN this one, Batman and Robin get hypotized by their friend Professor Nichols back in time (and space) to figure out if there was really a magnetic mountain in the Arabian Sea. Of course, he doesn't know how to bring them back, so Superman has to fly back in time and save them. Naturally, Aladdin gets involved, and we get Superman playing Genie. Some cool art, but not much of a story. Some really stupid stuff happens.... Batman had never heard of Aladdin... Robin somehow gnaws the R off his uniform to leave a trail while he's hooded and blindfolded, then someone does some sewing and puts it back....A boat falls part when it's nails get sucked into the metorite (that is the magnetic mountain) when there's no way they used them back then.. etc.

Justice League of America #7 'Cosmic Fun House' Fox/Sekowsky/Sachs Snapper and his girl Midge are over the moon to go to the new fun house at Happy Harbor, and it's out of the world! Unfortunately, it turns out to be literally out of this world, as Snapper and Midge end up on an Alien prehistoric planet. He calls his buds in the JLA, and they race to the rescue. Back home, the JLA decide to investigate in their civilian IDs, while Batman, Superman, and J'onn go back to outer space to see if others are lost in space. The bad guys turn out to be yet another alien race bent on world conquest. Apparently, they've had a probe gathering weapons information for 100,000 years, but accidently set it to land to Earth, so they want it back. The captured the leaguers with deadly pick spirals, and replace Flash and Green Lantern with themselves. The call the other leaguers back to send them after Zotar the weapons master, and attempt to find the probe with Flash and Green Lantern as their cover ids. Meanwhile, the captured leaguers escape, but get fun house-ized....Flash has a giant head which somehow prevents hi from moving, Green Arrow is a midget, Wonder Woman is too fat to lift her arms, gives him amnesia. Aquaman (who was not effected) saves the day but helping the distorted Leagues use their powers and the aliens are dispatched, just as Superman and co. come back from the future. The leaguers all go to the new fun house in their civilian ids, the end! So much crazy stuff here! Epic cover, for one. The aliens are pretty much the same as all the other aliens in early silver age, but I loved sending Superman through time space on a wild goose chase.. someone's in for some Super-dickery next time! Then there's Snapper Carr fighting of dinosaurs with a stick... either he did so for a LONG time (days? weeks?) or Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman's Jet, and Martian Manhunter have some sort of method of instantaneous space travel. I had no idea the JLA didn't know each others secret ids (except for Superman and Batman, I guess).. that was weird. Then there's the dates at the end... way to protect those secret ids! Also was Kathy Kane still around at this point? I thought she was much earlier. Super fun issue!

Kathy Kane (Batwoman) was around and still appearing with some frequency right up to the start of the "New Look" Batman in early 1964. (In Detective Comics, she's in #318, #321 and #325 in the last year Jack Schiff was editor.) I think she completely disappeared from the Batman comics at that point, but Bat-Mite appeared in World's Finest once or twice after his banishment from Batman and Detective, so maybe Batwoman made an appearance in WF or JLA or something like that after 1964.

JLA #8 'For Sale - The Justice League' Fox/Sekowsky/Sachs Pete Rickerts finds a little ray gun that makes people do what he says. Shortly after that, the 'top 10' gang bosses put up a cool million (100K each) for someone to take out the League... Pete answers the call. He starts with Green Lantern, who he uses to show his power off, then calls the rest of the league in... while apparently keeping his gadget secret. He then comes up with the idea of auctioning them off to commit crimes... the difference crime bosses like that idea, and argue over who will be the best, and set the Leaguers off on various (competing) crimes. We get Flash Vs. Green Lantern, Aquaman vs. Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman vs. Martian Manhunter... but all end in a draw, as some mysterious 3rd party steals the various prizes as the fights go on. Back at the ranch, Snapper opens a letter from the Professor that invented the gadget warning the JLA about it...whoops! The crooks are mad the Leaguers failed at being crooks, so they go back to plan A.. rubbing them out! Before all is lost, Aquaman realizes he's not brainwashed any more, and saves J'onn, who them saves Wonder Woman, etc..Pete tries to re-brain wash them.. but doesn't have the gadget any more.. apper saves the day! He used Dr. Destiny's anti-gravity belt to fly around and steal the stuff first, than pick-pocketed the pick pocket. At the end, Green Lantern whines that he didn't get to save anyone (he was rescued last), and Wonder Woman cheers him up. The end! Kinda a dumb story, but hero vs. hero fights are always fun..and Snapper, while essential to the plot, mercifully didn't have much dialogue. Notes: - Odd intro, calling the JLA'ers careers 'Long and Checkered'... some of them haven't been very long yet, and none 'Checkered'... maybe the writer assumes the target audience doesn't know what checkered means, and just thought it sounded good? -- No goofy excuses to wallpaper Superman and Batman this time, they're just listed as 'On Assignment'. I think I like that better. OTOH, I'd think the crooks wouldn't want to pay out with only 3/4 of the league... no mention of that at all. -- The death traps were really lame... kinda disappointing there... it looks more like a carnival than a killing field. -- I do believe the 'Cyberniray' is the worst name for a evil gadget ever... even Prof. Doofenschmirtz does better!

In my own opinion - this is one of the lamest, almost the worst, and the silliest weapon of all time - the dreaded Cyberniray and I wished that I hadn't .12 cents of my $1.00 a week allowance at the time it was published. BTW - I still have that issue! ... I will probably get $100-120 for it today! Great Write Up too!

I know I'm a bunch of years older than Mecha and when this came out in the fall of 1961 I was a bit too young for these types of comics. So I got to ask: 1)Mecha-how old were you when this came out in Sept of 1961 and when did you begin buying comics? 2)Mecha-a $1 allowance in 1961 was a huge amount of money for a very little boy. Its equivalent to about $8 at today's valuation. I'm not doubting you owning this but is this right?

Its equivalent to about $8 at today's valuation. I'm not doubting you owning this but is this right? My Bad ... this is correct version here! Here's the rundown: I started reading Comics around I was 5-6 years of age. My older brother who was 7 years older than me brought this book and soon he reached around 11-12 he stopped buying comics and started his Stamp Collection. He sold that book to me for a buck back in 1964 that puts me around the 5 year old mark. My allowance back then was a $1 a week. Not in 1961 of which I did not have an allowance. I gave my brother a dollar that was spread out in four (on a monthly basis starting in May, quarter) payments during the summer of 1964 to acquire this book from him. Eventually, I got most of his collection later on when I was a teenager and he was getting married and that's was the story behind that book. When, I was a teenager I was making around $25 a week doing odd jobs for neighbors - mowing grass, weeding, raking leaves, and so forth. I was working like 20 hours a week and I brought 10-15 comic books from him during in the mid 70's and by time I graduated out of high school - I brought another 5-10 books from him and his stamp collecting grew so did my comic book collection too. I started getting an allowance in 1964 and stayed a dollar a week until I got a dollar raise every 4 years. By time I was 16 years of age - in high school my allowance was $5.00 a week and combine that with my odd (see below) - I was getting $30 a week pretty much the whole year of which I put away $6-8 dollars a week for college.

Detective Comics 371 'Batgirl's Costume Cut ups' Fox/Kane This is the 'cover story' for the Showcase... which I though was interesting, consider the 60s sexist nature of the sentiment. The, the first line of script: 'As a working girl will, Barbara Gordon is window shopping...' wrong on so many levels. It doesn't really get better. The story is built around Batgirl overcoming her 'feminity' to fight crime... in one fight she fixes her mask when it get knocked loose (not vanity... it was covering her eyes!)... then she screams when Batman and Robin are about to get pulverized... while lets them escape, but they lecture her about it anyway. Then a bad guy tossed mud at her, and she brushes it off. The horror! Anyway, the end would have made Lorna proud... she rips her tights on purpose and distracts the crooks with her lovely legs... the end! Yeah, this was not good... kinda an illogical story even if it wasn't sexist. The bad guys were the 'Sport Spoilers'... who play random obscure sports in public then suddenly break into crime. There's even a panel where it seems like they forget it was a Batman book... they call him the 'man of might' with 'Steel-hard muscles'... isn't that Superman?

I find "Batgirl's Costume Cut-Ups" to be hilarious. Batgirl isn't doing anything wrong, it's just the perceptions of the male heroes.
Have you gotten to the one where the feminists are picketing Batman because he won't marry Batgirl? That one cracks me up too. It makes no sense.
