Absolutely. He essentially dropped two scenes: the Flitcraft story and the final, not-even-a-full-page exchange with Effie back at the office. But don’t forget that Hammett wrote it with intention of it being adapted to film. There is not a single interior monologue in the entire novel. What is amazing is that two times before Houston, Hollywood managed to mess it up.

I can guess on the movie ... it's hard to remember what I've watched the most. It's probably because this is the movie I've known the largest part of my life and like it as an adult and child so it's probably been watched the most. Movie -- Disney's Robin Hood Comic -- Astonishing X-Men #1 (though I read the whole Age of Apocalypse when I do read it) Song -- Crimson & Clover by Tommy James & the Shondels Book -- Charles Bukowski's Women

Movie -- His Girl Friday, The Thin Man, or Psycho Comic -- Mechanics by Jamie Hernandez or Kurtzman's MAD (in paperback form) Song -- Walk on Hot Coals by Rory Gallagher (live version) Book -- A Feast Unknown by Phillip Jose Farmer, What's Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies, or Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett

Movie-Probably The Wizard Of Oz since that was an annual "event" movie on TV during the 70s and 80s and then watched the VHS and DVD versions as well
Song-Could have been some top ten hit from AM radio during the 60s or 70s which they would play on the radio every 3 hours. But if I had to guess I would say Stairway To Heaven by Led Zep or Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd which was played to death on FM radio and whose albums I owned and played quite often
Comic-Has to be a comic I owned as a little kid when I didn't have many and read each one till the pages fell off. So I'll go with Batman # 156 and "Robin Dies At Dawn"

I wish he'd done more sequels - I really liked the whole premise of the Tarzan and Doc Savage analogues, the secret council of the Nine, and all that.

I can name ones I've watched/read/listened to a helluvalot, but the most...? No. My picks were ballpark estimates as well. Except for the Avengers #4, I think I always come back to that great, great story.

Much of the early triangle era, a few DC Digests, the Gibbons/Rude Worlds Finest mini, the JLA/Avengers mini, and all of Morrisons JLA would certainly all be in contention...

I think in another reality we could have been close friends, shax.
