After finding Absolute Batman to be utterly boring and feeling that Absolute Wonder Woman just felt like it was trying too hard to be dark and edgy I didn't have much hope for Absolute Superman...but I was wrong as this actually proved to be a solid read. Despite being set in a broken world where the bad guys won it still managed to capture the core of who Superman is and did so in a new way that still felt organic rather than forced. Unlike the original Ultimate Marvel Universe, this isn't a world I'd ever want to really see long term but Aaron definitely sold me on exploring it more here. This isn't simply, "It's Superman...but look he lobotomizes his enemies with his heart vision! Isn't that cool?" It's well thought out and the changes aren't just done simply to be different but because they make sense to the story. The same can't be said about the absolute takes on Batman and Wonder Woman. Why did Batman have an axe head that doubled as his chest emblem? There's no logical reason behind that, other than shock value and that's pretty dull. Wonder Woman was slightly less egregious, it was definitely over the top with the giant sword and the skeleton horse making it look like it was trying to be a Meatloaf album cover come to life but it at least had somewhat of an in story reason: she was raised in Hell. It's a really shallow and over the top way to express that and it wasn't super interesting to me as a reader but it had at least a thin veneer of reason to it beyond, "Hey, isn't this bad ass!?" which was all that seemed to be the thought behind Absolute Batman.

I love Jeff Lemire so I'm willing to give him some time to find his feet on JSA...but this issue was pretty unsatisfying. I don't want a broken, dysfunctional JSA, I want them bright and optimistic and this wasn't it. I really think this would have benefited from a slower, more character focused entry than what we got here. I'm a long time reader and I know these characters pretty well even I was a little lost, who's the new Sandman for instance? He looks like the one from Earth 2 but I don't remember him being incorporated into the new universe. Same with the villains, I remember the evil sandman from the Sandman mini that came out last year...is that the same guy? Didn't he die? Who knows.

Action Comics Superman story was great. I also loved the Green Arrow Annual as an epilogue for Williamson's run on the character.

I didn't know how I'd feel about Superman meeting his parents on Krypton yet again but he managed to pull it off. The characterization was great, and I'm really interested to see where things go.

I loved Infinity Inc. so it was cool seeing them again, so that didn't bother me as I love seeing them both but this deconstructed start was just a little tired. Lemire is a capable writer so I'm hoping things get better.

Batgirl was a pretty solid start, and while yes we've seen the "tough love from an awful mom" storyline before that doesn't mean it can't be done well. I think my only real trepidation is that it's part one of six...is there really enough mileage in this kind of plot to be worth six issues? Three or four? Sure that's fine for a "who am I?" kind of story...but six? At that length it has to be more than just "fine" it needs to be truly excellent.

I don't know what to make of these Absolute titles. While its something for a new-ish direction or whatever DC is up these days, these 3 titles aren't working for me. Good creator names on them but they're my cup of team. I had to read the first issues to see what the hype is.... eh, hard pass. Like most of the DC stuff these days.

I find it funny and perhaps even a little insightful, my LCS sold out of AB #1 the day it was released. Same with AWW #1. However, they still had some of the variant copies of AS #1 available at the end of the day so I was able to order a copy to put in with my regular pull list subscription to be mailed to me later this month. (Make of that what you will). The previews I've seen have looked good and for the most part, I have faith in Aaron's writing. As for AB, I can see some your points. I read it digitally and the most interesting facet I found was Bruce apparently being childhood friends with his rogues gallery. It gives off kinda a Peter Parker-ish vibe which I think changes and perhaps even adds to that dynamic. I'd be interested to see how that develops.

I read this digitally and honestly, this felt more like an issue of the Avengers than the JSA what with everyone arguing and yelling. For me, Lemire is usually a solid writer so I may give this a few more issues to see where it's going but this was a rough start. Also, I thought it looked familiar. Jay racing thru the infinity that is the Tower of Fate was used previously back in JSA #1 or #2 by Robinson/Goyer. And yeah he was having about the same luck back then too.

Action Comics Superman story was great. I also loved the Green Arrow Annual as an epilogue for Williamson's run on the character. Can anyone explain to me why oh why Action Comics has gone to a weekly schedule? Bi-weekly I can understand and better yet, afford. Trying to add it to my pull list now simply blows up my monthly budget.
