I still have a working VCR and a few obscure films and tv series on commercial tape I can't replace. A Coronation Street special release (with a new framing sequence) on the various women through the years to walk t'cobbles, the Jan Svankmajer Alice, a few Nation Film Board Of Canada docs, some Japanese films under the Kino imprint, but I did replace the 1927 Wings with a DVD edition. I think it was around $30 for the VHS tape of that movie but less that a third of that for the DVD. Commercial tapes were massively expensive for quite awhile.

I haven't owned a VCR is probably 10 years now, but I still have an apple box full of VHS tapes.
They're mostly convention bootlegs, Doctor Who tapes and my boxed sets of Star Wars/Indiana Jones, but generally its stuff that holds sentimental value to me and even though I have replaced a lot of it with DVDs I don't see myself getting rid of them anytime soon.

Back to things I love(d) about comics... I loved the slang, in the Marvels words like fershlugginer I wouldn't know from, and E.C. gave us potrzebie! Also I always liked the crazy Yancy Street Gang vs. The Thing shtick that kept going for decades! Maybe the high point was that one Two-In-One where those lousy fershlugginer Yancy Streeters even got co-billing! It was only a bit of a letdown that they were construction workers with a lot of their faces in the shadows of hard hats, I mean for all we might know those were really Bleeker Streeters under there! I guess you just had to take them at their word, and they did seem to mean well this time...

I've gotten so used to exclaiming 'Great Caesar's Ghost!" and "Great Scott!" just to see how people would react that I now do it sincerely out of habit. Hard to convince people that you're being serious when such utterances involuntarily come out of your mouth, but it feels like a wonderful new quirk has been successfully grafted on to my brain.

Maybe one of the blunders in comics was when Mark Waid revealed that the Yancy street gang never pranked the Thing. It was always Johnny Storm sending him packages and tricks.

yes indeed I absolutely love using comic book lingo, slang, references, especially around people who don't know it, don't understand it or can't place it. Confusion is grand fun. Holy Batpoles boss, by the bristling beard of Odin that's a great idea, my Spidey Sense is tingling so it must be time to go to the bathroom, you sir are a true son of a Banth, Let's get to work cuz it's CLOBBERIN' Time. The blank look upon some peoples faces while others get the humor and understand is truly priceless!
I have a male nurse friend here on one of my units and we will pass comic book (and television/movie) quips at each other endlessly when together and sometimes the other staff just walk around asking what they heck is wrong with the two of us. Great fun indeed!

Cei-U!
Of course, we also saw Ben and Reed fighting in World War Two...

Yeah, it's even worse than his questionable use of Doom. Waid had great story ideas in that run, but poor attention to detail like this brings it down.

"There is no Canon, there is no Canon..."Well, except by Pachelbel (in D). Maybe people only liked to rile up The Thing because they knew they couldn't do those things to The Hulk. I picked up one from an old Basil Wolverton page in a Fawcett comic... "Zounds, your peeppers are as sound as a hound's." But "By the hoary hoasts of Hoggath" might best be left out of some social circles.

I was just thinking about Mark Waid earlier today! I was reminded that he's the one who needlessly RE-BOOTED the LEGION universe 3 separate times. 3 !!!!! I actually bought LSH new as it was coming out longer than any other comic in my life. I may have longer runs but that's with back issues & reprints. LEGION I bought from 1978 up to at least 20 years later.
And it was-- OF ALL PEOPLE-- Mark Waid who finally made me quit. It wasn't like when I quit buying SPIDER-MAN on 3 separate occacions, because I got so disgusted and thought it had gotten so bad. No. It was more like... "Okay, I'm bored. This just ISN'T doing it for me anymore."
Have not looked back since. And I was in KLORDNY for 15 years!!!

I was sad when the Legion got rebooted that time. I was loving Abnett & Lanning's run--the only time I was ever into the Legion, in fact--and then they wiped it out. A&L's series was fun and Waid's was rigid and humorless (Kitson is a good artist but his style seemed to emphasize this point). I quit after a couple issues.

Absolutely no reason why Cosmic Rays couldn't be the explanation for their slowed aging or immortality. Comic book reasoning Just Because!
