Books I got in new in December 1977one caveat here, with Christmas, I may have gotten a lot of the books I previously mentioned in this thread as I got a lot of the polybagged 3 packs of comics as stocking stuffers at Christmastime as stocking stuffers, but of the books that came out in December of '77, I got the following: Iron Man 108 (had my mail order subscription) Star Wars 9 ( Imight have gotten this later in '78 as part of a polybag 3-pack that had SW 7-9 in it. and that's it, small month. -M

Not much this month; but, damn that Legion treasury was great! Awesome artwork from Mike Grell, plus the wedding of Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl. I had read a few Legion comics, by that point; but didn't know most of the team. The book has a complete rundown of everyone, with their given names and basic background. I sat there and memorized every entry, so that I would know who everyone was, the enxt time I read the regular comic. Who says comic fans are obsessive?

Black Panther #8 - continuing what looked like the early stages of what was intended to be a long, multi-issue story set in Wakanda. I'm still curious about where Kirby was going to take this, but his tenure on the series was cut short all too soon.
Conan the Barbarian #84 - I think this issue got back to the long multi-issue story-line about Conan and his companions (journeying to Stygia, which I remember really enjoying at the time. I still think of as perhaps the peak of the Buscema/Chan issues - well, perhaps more of a whole mountain range than a single peak, since it went on for so long!
Marvel Comics Super Special #2 - can't recall if this was a reprinted story from SSoC or a brand new one, but I don't think the Buscema/Alcala combo was up to its best here - in contrast to the Treasury Edition reprint of a different Buscema/Alcala SSoC story that worked surprisingly well in colour.
Master of Kung Fu #62 - I still think Jim Craig was under-rated as an artist, even though he never really found his feet on MoKF, and in any case must have had difficulty keeping up with the grind of a regular deadline. When I read the entire MoKF a few years ago, I was impressed how good this transition period between Gulacy and Zeck was, in spite of the inconsistent artwork.
Thor #269 - pretty sure I bought this and read it, but can't remember anything more, probably because it was soon eclipsed by the Roy Thomas run that started a few issues later, which was a great breath of fresh air to what had been a moribund series for a long time.
Tomb of Dracula #63 - part of the long Dracula vs Satan story. Wolfman really raised the stakes on what turned out to be the long dénouement of the ToD series. Has anyone ever asked Marv Wolfman what he meant to do had the series not been cancelled? Surely it couldn't have gone back to the old status quo. But since the series was cancelled, we'll never know - the black & white Dracula mag that followed soon after was pretty much a reboot.
Surprisingly low issue count this time round for me - because this was still within the peak period of my comics reading. But I see that I missed several of my regular series this month in 1977 - Howard the Duck, the Avengers, the Defenders, Captain Marvel, the b&w Hulk mag, ...

December 1977 was a wonderful time of comic collecting. I was in full swing mostly Marvel zombie with scatterings of those DC which i liked. Oddly enough Marvel was ruling the distribution at this time as there was DC i would have gotten but they were never on the racks at any of the Circle K or 7-11's around my neighborhood. It was pretty much this way through the late 70's here in Phoenix. Don't know if it was the distribution deals or Marvel sold stronger than DC.
Amazing Spider-man 178 Avengers 169 Batman 297 Captain Marvel 55 DC Special Series 9 Defenders 57 Detective comics 476 FF 192 Firestorm 1 Godzilla 8 Human Fly 7 Hulk 221 Iron Man 108 John CArter 10 JLA 152 Man from Atlantis 2 MTU 67 MOKF 62 Ms Marvel 15 Nova 18 Showcase 98 Shazam 34 Spectacular Spider-Man 16 Star Wars 9 Steel 1 Super Team Family 15 Superboy and LOSH 237

One of the most satisfying Team-Ups of the era. Spider-Man utterly rejects both metaphorical and actual trophy hunting, breaks his chains, rescues Tigra, sets her against Kraven, who then finds himself (literally) trampled underfoot.

It's January 1978 and here's what I got off the stands that winter... Avengers 170 (Ultron was back!) Ghost Rider #29 (an early exposure to Doc Strange for me) Iron Man 109 (the one book I had a mail sub too) Machine Man 1 (I loved robots at the time, so picked it up out of curiosity) Marvel Super Action 7 (classic Cap reprints, I missed Marvel Double Feature) Rampaging Hulk 8 (my first exposure to Marvel's b&w mags, and oh my god the original Avengers appeared!!!) Thor 270 (Blastaar & Simonson) This was actually a fairly big month for comics for me. -M

Off the stands in Jan. '78 (I bought many later...and read many more).
Invaders 27. And that's it.
I did get Action 482 in a Whitman three-pack. But that was some time later.
Small month even for the time.

January 1978 and back to school from Christmas break and scouring all the local convenience stores for issues I can find!! Full on Marvel Zombie mode for the most part with sprinklings of DC. Distribution sucks here in Phoenix and very few companies other than Archie to be found on the racks regularly. A few bags at K-Mart will find some Whitman and that is about it. At this point funny comics not being bought because my cousins all get Archie and such so read their stuff saving my hard earned nickels and dimes for the big 2! All New Coll Edition: Ali vs Supes!!!!! Avengers 170 Batman 298 Defenders 58 Devil Dinosaur 1 FF 193 Godzilla 9 Howard the Duck 23 cuz it's a Star Wars parody Human Fly 8 Hulk 222 Invaders 27 Iron Man 109 John CArter 11 JLA 153 Machine Man 1 Man from Atlantis 3 Marvel Premiere 41 MTU 68 MTIO 38 MOKF 63 Mister Miracle 23 Ms Marvel 16 PM/IF 50 Spec Spider-Man 17 Spiderwoman 1 Star Hunters 4 Superboy and LOSH 238 Thor 270 Warlord 12 What If 8 X-Men 110
