Hi Confessor , Captain is CLOSE above. . but let me clarify. there are actually NINE candles on a Menorah (either electric, or traditional candles). 1 for each day, and the Shamash - the "helper candle" that is used to light the others. A "true" menorah will never have the Shamash on the same level as the other 8 candles, it will either be higher, or lower (which is why you see many menorahs like these: you often see similar layout of candelabras in a Church, or at religious services, but without the Shamash at a different plane? it's not a true Menorah. anyways, you light one candle (and the Shamus) for each day. So on the first night, there are two candles lit, on the 2nd night there will be 3. you replace the candles each day, so the menorah will always start with the #of candles that match the day of the Holiday it is. the candles are lit at sundown - I just lit ours at 6pm, since I took a nap today after gorging on Chinese food (tho really, think that was due to the Hydrocodone I took to help with my back, which went out at some point overnight. . so the drug makes me sleepy, but at least not hurting. . LOL. . getting old SUCKS). but tonight is the 4th night, so our menorah has 5 candles lit: the 4 on the lower tier, representing night 4, and the Shamus. make sense? there are still 4 more night, so the last night will be this coming Sunday. one thing to keep clear, Chanukah is not a "religious" holiday as Christmas is. . it's a festival of lights, that just happens to fall around the same time of year (tho on the Hebrew Calendar), so it often gets lumped in and folks think it's a really religious Holiday. it's not. there are really only 3 "biggie" religious Jewish Holidays: Passover (which celebrates the Jews leaving Egypt, and happens to be around Easter. . . the famous "the Last Supper" painting is depicting Jesus at a Passover Seder (many folks don't realize that). Rosh Hashonna - the Jewish New Year Yom Kippur - the day of atonement (10 days after Rosh Hashonna)

Yom Kippur. Not to be confused with the English 'Yum, kipper', which just means someone got a good tin of kippers. Er, am I going to have to atone for this joke? Happy Chanukah bert!

Merry Christmas, folks. I hope your indulgence in naked consumerism has been happily punctuated with quality time with loved ones and gluttony.

Lots of fascinating info here already, Rob Allen, @bert and beccabear67. Thank you for that. In particular, I had no idea about the existence of the Chanukah Bush or that blue was the Chanukah colour As far as I know, blue and white are the colors associated with Judaism in general, not just Hanukkah. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_in_Judaism

Check Mark Evanier's blog. In the last few days he's posted several different versions of Tom Lehrer's song "Hanukkah in Santa Monica".

I imagine there might be a couple of folks here at the CCF who, like me, are fans of Universal horror films and board games. Wondering if anyone could provide a review of this game. Looks like it could be a lot of fun.
