In the most simple terms I suppose no other country had our westward expansion into a "new" frontier that developed the unique mythology surrounding the American Wild West and cowboys and guns were a big part of that. Well, beccabear mentioned Canada; the other country that immediately came to mind is Russia (expanding eastward rather than westward to sure), and eventually taking over a far vaster territory. Bolded the rest of my statement that was making my point. Maybe Russia does have a mythology built around their expansion.

A map of New York City shared in another thread got me thinking about something rather random (and maybe pointless, but "pointless" is my middle name)...
Why have I never seen photos/footage of New York State Police troopers in New York City? Obviously, New York City has its own force in the NYPD. And you see plenty of NYPD cops in photos/footage.
Someone should give a prize to the first person to share a picture of a New York State Police trooper/trooper car in New York City.

You don’t generally see them in the city, it’s not their jurisdiction. I year or so I started to see them in the highways and expressways of the city. In fact that’s all you see on the highways, no more city cops stopping motorists for speeding on those roads

Do they not have jurisdiction in the city limits, then? I mean this with love, but US law enforcement confuses me. City cops, sheriffs, state troopers, etc. Different uniforms in every city. Different uniforms in every state. No sheriffs in Alaska or Louisiana because those states don't have counties. I mean, if I fall down a manhole in Los Angeles, who will come and help me out? An LAPD cop? A California state trooper? The Los Angeles County Sheriff? Where does the 911 call go to? We do it simple here in Britain (as long as you don't ask why London has two police forces...)

Wow, seems a novelty seeing a state trooper car within the city. Thanks for the image.
I'd love to visit NY one day!

I was speeding in Pasadena one day and a deputy was parked on the side. He gave me a speeding ticket and literally said, "You didn't think I could give you a speeding ticket did you ?"
He's right.
Now I know better.

Oh, confound it... The graphics card of my computer seems to be shot. The thing is barely eight years old... It’s practically new! Can’t trust these new gizmos anymore.

Sorry to hear that RR !
I was just thinking back on how young my Dell is and I think it's 11 years old now.
She's held up pretty well; getting a little slower with some of the programs that require more speed and memory so maybe in the near future I need to upgrade.

Mine's ten. I did get one circa 2000 up and running to use an old scanner incompatible with the 'new' (ha ha) PC... one last time as it turns out; it burned right out finally (and was showing streaks in the images sometimes before that). It was a nice large flatbed, seems very hard to find anything like it now.

I can’t imagine how demand could have shrunk so much that not one is being sold anymore (unless it’s those professional things that costs several thousand dollars). Even photocopiers can’t handle 14 x 17 pages anymore, not even to shrink them. 11x14 seems to be as large as it gets.
