Wow that makes 3 of us going to England this year. @mechagodzilla and The Captain and me! Exciting, isn't it? Though I think The Captain is visiting Wales primarily, but he may hope across the Severn Bridge to visit the English, I guess. Let's hope you all have nice weather for your visits (it can often be a rare thing here in Britain). Here's some handy British phrases to help you get around... {NSFW Content:}

My neighbor has been tearing his house apart next door and putting part of it back together (yet again) for the last few days off and on, as it goes on longer the less time I am able to sit at the PC which is on the wall next to the noise, so you might not see me too much some days. Especially when there are big crashes of beams hitting concrete or hitting the bed of a truck to haul stuff away. Stuff being hauled off is mostly newer than what we have, plus this guy made the modest single family house into three (or maybe even four) suites to rent some out years ago, and the driveway widened to accommodate more vehicles. I'm not a great fan of this neighbor, all I can do is endure and wear ear plugs. The front and back lawns have long been chopped up into little separate walled patios. Plus he hates the deer and chases them away and tries to scare them as they nibble on his shrubs. On the plus side I have one side without the lawn crews that show up every week no matter what at every other property around here with giant headphones and massively loud riding mowers/blowers/trimmers. Doesn't even matter if anything has grown or anything is there to blow around, they do it for the hour they are paid for. Midurban, is it much better in some rural areas with logging or dirtbikers? Vent mode off. Oh for the tranquil paddocks with ewes of Yorkshire dales, eh wot? I will just stare at the tea box and try to imagine.

That is correct about our trip being mainly Wales. We're going to fly in and out of London, spend a partial day in Manchester so my wife can look for where her great-great-great-or so grandparents were from, and we may hit Stonehenge time permitting the last day. However, the majority of the trip will be spent in the land without vowels.

My brother and I are taking a road trip to see another brother who just turned 50 for a party we're throwing him.
I'm gone Saturday and Sunday as it's about 200 miles away.
Girlfriend has been feeling poorly for 3 days now. She volunteered to watch my pup until I get back Sunday but in our discussion tonight she says she has double ear infection and strep as well, so I look it up. Can dogs get strep ? Rare but more than likely they can get the strep as a transient bacteria to pass it to another human, which would be me !
Tomorrow I'm picking up an automatic dog feeder and just leave her in the condo. Been thinking about it anyway for day trips.

My Welsh grandmother lived in Manchester in the years just before World War I. When the war started, all the men in her family went into the army, and she went home to help run the family farm. Have a wonderful trip!

BigPapaJoe , regarding a career as a cartoonist or taking a job that sounds pretty good, I don't believe it's an either/or proposition. I've dreamed of being a cartoonist since primary school, the same way I dreamed of becoming an astronaut, a scientist, a hockey player, a novelist, a martial artist and an archaeologist, or of living abroad. Dreams are what motivate us. Some things we realize early on will never go beyond the very first steps. I naively sent my résumé to the Canadian Space Agency when they opened a competition for new astronauts in the early '90s and never even got a "no thank you" note. But then it's understandable: only truly exceptional individuals with the right skill set would even be considered for the first tiers of selection. Hockey player? Forget it; I was strictly amateur time. Novelist? I did write a lot of stuff but am not particularly gifted, skilled or interesting as an author. Scratch all those dreams. Some things we can achieve, at least partly. I did become a martial artist by going to the dojo for a dew decades. Not a good one, mind you, but at least it's something. Living abroad? I managed to do that in Germany and the U.S., for a little less than a decade all told. You, my friend, are having more success than I at that specific dream! So, good for you! Living in Macau sounds all kinds of cool. Some things, next, we manage to achieve because we have staying power. I started drawing comics in primary schools, as mentioned above, and I never stopped. My material was crappy and derivative at first, with poorly-rendered adventures featuring thinly disguised versions of popular characters. Then I got better, little by little, creating my own things. Then it started to get good enough that other people would be interested in actually reading it. I won a few amateur contests, I made a little money on the side. It was clear, while I was in grad school, that if I was to earn a living I could not make drawing comics my priority. I don't mean that it's a bad plan in and of itself, but there's a bit of advice I got at the time that I took to heart: when considering a career as a cartoonist, look at the professionals and compare yourself to the very best, not to the average Joe. My art wasn't bad, but it wasn't equal to the best in the field. That didn't mean I had to give up that particular dream: just that I had to find some other way to make it work than target Marvel, DC or Dargaud. Today, twenty-five years later, I teach science for a living. It's a good job, a challenging job, that I truly enjoy. I am also a cartoonist. I kept drawing all along, taking odd jobs here and there designing logos, t-shirts, newspaper and magazine ads. I publish cartoons on a website. I also created my own publishing house so that I could publish my stuff (two graphic novels to date, with more to come). Could I provide for my family just by drawing? No, definitely not; but there are very few people who can actually do that for any length of time. Such folks are very talented, or very lucky, or both, but most of all they are few in numbers. That doesn't mean that the rest of us can't enjoy the personal satisfaction of creating our own stuff and getting recognition for it. It's not my place to give you any advice, but if you want it here it is: pursue your dream of being a cartoonist, and don't see it either as a burden (don't regret the time you spent honing your skills; that time is never lost, no matter what you do later on) and don't consider giving it up altogether for other considerations. As long as you're willing to work at it, regularly (regularity is THE thing), you will make it; it doesn't matter if you produce one page a day, a week, a month or a year. Best of luck, friend. Thanks for sharing. Your story, and insight was helpful. Which is why I continue coming to this place. At the very least, I woke up this morning with a much more optimistic attitude than I've had the last 4 or 5 days. I think your post, in conjunction with some other things I did last night is responsible for making me feel better. I just hope the confident sensations has a longer shelf life than it seems to have for me. In any case, I have four months until I go to that hotel bar. Hopefully, I'll take my seat (which I've already picked out) feeling a lot better about my life's outlook compared to now.

One of things you can look for with a child that gets strep frequently. As far as your girlfriend giving the dog strep and the dog giving it to you? Miniscule risk. If your GF has strep you have already been exposed if you have kissed her or shared a drink in the last 6-7 days.

She’s got free run of the condo. I pick up any poo and regularly clean the rugs and carpet. No worries 😉
