I'm no liberal...I lean much more towards socialism. Er, uh, thinking the S word might be even more alien down there than that L word. Sounds like a great trip though, so many places of huge musical import! I'm envious. I'm not sure if kudzu is edible though. I'm a big R.E.M. fan, so I definitely wanna see some kudzu while I'm down in Georgia... Stopping off at Athens, Georgia is a must too.

Oh, the politics is just part of it. The deep south is unbearably hot and humid most of the year. They have three seasons - summer, January and February. And I suspect that vegetarianism is rare in that region also. But seriously, I know you'll have a good time wherever you go. My "uninhabitable" comment was tongue-in-cheek. (but the humidity really is incredible) The South is also notorious for its treatment of dogs. More dogs than anywhere else in the US, but they take the worst care of them. Very few if any leash and/or spaying/neutering laws. Not much local municipal/ county/ state money allotted to animal control or care. The traditional "mind yer own business" mentality. That means more than a million perfectly healthy, adoptable dogs are put down every year in the South.

Heh, that just reminded me of this bit in one of those "Pittsburgh dad" shorts you can find on YouTube: "Yeah, there's four seasons here: winter, more winter, construction and stink bugs."

As a Pittsburgher for life, and even though I'm not much of a fan of "Pittsburgh Dad", I will say that's a pretty accurate account of the seasons around here. The weather is typically garbage from November through April, then the orange construction cones and barrels come out to make a mess of things from May through October, and there is the annual stinkbug infestation from June through September. On the other hand, we do get some very pretty fall colors on the trees, so that is a plus, and the winters, while long, aren't usually crippling like they can be in other parts of the country. It isn't so much snow and ice that is the problem, but rather the cold and neverending grey days for months on end.

Thanks for all the kind words!
On another note, surely someone on this forum will defend the honor of the South.
...it won't be me, though!

I won't necessarily defend it, even though I live in it (Oklahoma). But I also won't say that the stereotypes of what the south in the US is, are all accurate and even the majority. There's as many unethical people in the south as there is in the north. I've spent half my life in the south and half in the north. I experienced more and witnessed more racism as a Yankee than in the south. Now if you want to talk about all the things wrong with the south, I got a list of them. But they're all petty or innocuous.

I'm back on the job hunt for the first time in over a year. Hoping to land something in Austin or LA.

Been working in benefits for a little over a year, but I want to jump to something more strategy oriented.

Planned out our vacations for this year. In addition to the 2.5 weeks in England in June/July (just my wife & I) we will go to the Chesapeake Bay right after Labor Day and take our daughters and son-in-laws. And early Dec to Wellsboro, PA (the "grand canyon" of PA) to see their town decorated for Christmas (again with the whole family). Also a long weekend at one of the beaches in NJ in Aug.

You're going to Wellsboro? I used to spend a lot of time up there when I worked in the natural gas industry here in PA, although it has been about three years since I've been there. Just a cool little town. There is a hobby and gaming shop there (at least there was) where I got my copy of Marvel Two-In-One #1. Hope you and the wife enjoy England! We booked another three nights in Wales yesterday, so we have 5 of our 8 nights covered, and now we're trying to figure out where we're going to stay for the remainder of the trip. It's either going to be along the southern coast, down by Swansea, or over in England in the Bath area. Sounds like you are going to have a busy and exciting travel year. I can't wait until we're at that point, where we can take long weekends or random trips to just check out Christmas decorations. I'm super jealous of you guys.

My wife and sister are scheduled to return to the states tomorrow from a quick France/England trip and this morning she told me there was an explosion in a bakery on the same block of the hotel they were staying. It's in the news that it was a gas leak. 5 people died but Thank God she is safe. I read that they were having protests over there against their Government that had turned violent on a few occasions. It's always something.

Yes it's great being semi-retired and working part time but I do miss seeing my daughters everyday. At least they live locally so I do get to see them every 7-10 days.
And we went to Wellsboro a few years ago in the fall and found out about their old fashioned Christmas. I know about the hobby shop. I also bought some comics there!
As far as England we will be going south to Worthing for 2 days for a wedding. Most of our time we will be exploring around London. We are spending time researching and planning our trip!
We plan on traveling a lot the next 10 years while we have a decent amount of disposal income and good health. In 10 years I plan on full retirement and have no idea on what position we will be in both financially and health wise. Hopefully we will be OK and continue our current lifestyle but one never knows the future.
