With the last Sandman book, fresh of the prints, it would be a good time to reflect on the whole series. I know that picking just one, is going to prove difficult, but polls don't differentiate between multiple choices, so I went with the fairest option.

I have a three-way tis of "A Doll's House," "Season of Mists" and "The Kindly Ones."
But if I have to pick one and only one, I pick "A Doll's House" because I've read it so many times. There must be a reason that I used to read it once a year. I've only read "The Kindly Ones" twice.

I thought about giving three choices, but they would be treated equally by the software, there's no way to establish a priority and, as you ended doing, there's always a reason for picking one over the other.

"A Game of You," assuming they fixed that one chapter that was inked by a drunken monkey in 6 and a half minutes. (I heard they did.)

I dunno about best, but Brief Lives aka 'Dreamy and Dizzy's Road Trip' is my favourite.

I gave my vote to the underdog, "Preludes and Nocturnes".
Gaiman may not have found his footing yet, but it's the first book I read and the one that made me love the series as a whole.

I actually really like Overture; it had a fun plot, a talking cat and the way it tied into the Preludes was fantastic.

I gave my vote to the underdog, "Preludes and Nocturnes". I wouldn't label it the "underdog", even if by Gaiman's own admission, it was the clumsiest. The plot is one of the most engaging, throughout the series, and it had some very fine moments, specially in the first issue.

It's a hard question, because I think the best of the series are single issues, which are spread throughout the books. The first and final issues are such masterpieces, but not so much I'd give the nod to the first or last books. The best two stories are "Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Ramadan", which makes me look at those books. One features Calliope, Element Girl, and a great little story involving cats. The other gives us Emperor Norton (a hometown hero), Orpheus, stories about Rome and Marco Polo... I think I'll pick that one.
Fables and Reflections for me.

1 day in and a 7-way tie for first.
And if I were allowed to pick 3 books, then you'd have a 9-way tie.

Sandman Midnight Theatre & Fables and Reflections - are the only two that I read and I'm kind of leaning towards Fables because of the tales of Morpheus, the King of Dreams that translates of retelling tales of kings, explorers, spies, and werewolves in one great book.
Too bad, that I can't vote more than one ... so it Fables because it was Fantastic.

Season of mists was the first volume that had me floored from beginning to end. It's hard to take a completely new approach to Satan and Hell and make it work when it feels like everyone and their mother is trying to do the same these days, but I love what Gaiman does there, and it's the first time where we see Dream now restored to power, and yet somehow utterly powerless. This volume showed me the series had major staying power long after Dream's domain had been fully reclaimed.

I'm embarrassed to say the only thing I can even remember of sandman at this point is nothing more than the first few storyline titles.

Nah, changed my mind. Endless Nights. I didn't even think of it as an option but "What I've Tasted of Desire" is by far my favorite Sandman thingy (and I love everything Sandman!) And everything else ranged from interesting to great.
1. Endless Nights 2. Game of You, assuming they fixed the messed up art 3. Kindly Ones 4. Doll's House (I might be putting this a little high 'cause it was the first volume I read.) 5. Season of Mists 6. Dream Country 7. World's End 8. The Wake 9. Brief Lives 10. Fables and Reflections 11. Preludes and Nocturnes 12. Dream Hunters Haven't read: Overture
