Buck was a legend, in the comedy world, with work with Steve Allen, Get Smart and SNL. Back in the 70s, I had no clue who he was, when he'd turn up as guest host of SNL; but, he'd always be funny. Later, I learned more about his pedigree: co-creator of Get Smart!, Captain NICE, Quark, screenwriter on The Graduate and What's Up Doc?, co-director of Heaven Can Wait, etc, etc. He talked on a documentary about SNL, in the 70s and spoke of being a writing consultant, who usually ended up hosting because the guest pulled out. He remarked how they would save their really edgy stuff for him, like the sketch with Lorraine Newman and Gilda Radner, where he is a babysitting uncle and likely pedophile. There is no way that would have ever aired in later years (amazed that it did).
Fine actor, too, in multiple character roles, including the IRS agent, in Grumpy Old Men.
You don't see talent like that, often.
I do recall reading an article by him, about Bettie Page. He actually knew her, a bit, as he had dated Joan Rydell, a stripper and model for the Klaws, along with Bettie.

Sad news. As an unrepentant prog fan, RUSH was a top ten band for me, providing key elements to the soundtrack of my high school years. Grateful I got to see them in 2012.
We'll not see Neil's like again. Here's hoping he now resides in a stately pleasure dome, dining on honeydew and drinking the milk of paradise.

The Neil (not Neal) Peart news was the first thing I saw in my newsfeed when I got home from work tonight. Sad news indeed. I was a bigger Rush fan in high school and college than I am now, but Neil's work was truly legendary. He will be missed.

Damn, this 9-hour time difference means that the first things I saw this morning when I turned on my computer and glanced at the news feed is that Neil Peart is no longer with us. I've loved Rush since I first heard one of their songs on the radio as a preteen. Even though I recall reading somewhere that he was having serious health issues, this is still a shock. RIP.

It's been said that Snapper Carr was created to capitalize on the "Kookie " craze. Edd had better hair though . RIP

The Neil (not Neal) Pert news was the first thing I saw in my newsfeed when I got home from work tonight. Sad news indeed. I was a bigger Rush fan in high school and college than I am now, but Neil's work was truly legendary. He will be missed. and F**K Cancer. -M The fan in me wants it known I typed Neil, looked at other posts, thought wait, maybe I've got it wrong, and 'corrected' it. But while Rush has seemed to be a permanent fixture in my life they weren't a major group for me to want everything. Now to correct that sentence... I remember older kids having their first (pre-Neil) album back in what, 1975? It looked like a comic book panel sound effect. I definitely remembered the cover more than any of the music. Then the title song from the next album made an impression, Fly By Night... they couldn't have been less a fly by night group from that point on. Neil Peart really was the booster rocket to Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson! Next up I remember Closer To the Heart, I can still get a major contact nostalgia high when I accidentally hear that one. There was that big concept album 2112, and I saw the visual stuff, merchandise and even fan made stuff around it, but I guess I must've been still a little too young to appreciate it at the time. 'My' Rush for my generation though was around the corner... again with the buts though; I was basically just hearing their hits, at least they were hits in Canada... however everyone, including me had the Moving Pictures album! Back to the contact nostalgia high, Spirit Of the Radio, Tom Sawyer, New World Man, Distant Early Warning, all branded onto my brain and leading back to specific times, places and people of the early '80s for me. But Subdivisions... whoah. I hear that and I am playing Tempest with the kid in the video that went with it (at the back of cheap goods shop on lover Yates Street)! It was great to see the entire Time Machine concert on tv awhile back, wish I could've seen them live (all I got was the special issue of 'Prog' magazine featuring it... you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone as they say. Thanks for the great memories Mr. Peart!

I just found out about Neil Peart this morning. Though not a huge Rush fan, they have grown on me recently (nostalgia value) plus I've always liked Tom Sawyer, and my best friends in high school (whom I still keep in touch with) was a big Rush fan. RIP Neil.
