Nothing riles me up more than the financial treatment of so many classic comic creators.Ditko,Kirby,Finger etc etc
I give credit to Bob Kane for having a family relative with him who was a lawyer when he signed an agreement with DC.But then he treated Bill Finger in the same greedy manner.And Moldorf.And Sprang.And Robinson.And on and on

I've actually never heard of Bill Finger and had no idea Bob Kane wasn't the sole creator of Batman. Just goes to show that the man needs to be credited. It's old news to people who know, I'm sure many people don't.

It's old news to people who know, I'm sure many people don't. Bill Finger is rightly regarded as a giant in the world of comics. His list of credits reads like a history of the medium itself. That his contributions were suppressed for multiple decades speaks as much to his own humility as it does the envy of his remarkable talent by certain of his peers.

It infuriates me when people point out that Finger "signed a work for hire contract" as if the legalities abolishes Kane and DC of all moral and ethical responsibilities. Okay, we can all agree that most of The Powers that Be during the Golden Age were evil, exploitative con-men and megalomaniacs, but what's DC's excuse now other than being so greedy that they can't be bothered to do for the Finger family what's been done for Kane's for decades? You put Finger's name alongside Kane, give the Finger family some spare cash (that wouldn't even register on the bottom line) and be done with it.

Reminds me a lot of what I'm reading about Walt Disney in the Mickey Mouse reprint books. |

And Sprang.And Robinson.And on and on Dick Sprang: not quite. I was privileged to know Sprang in his later years, and I learned many details of his work on Batman from the artist himself. Unlike Moldoff (and probably Finger and probably Robinson), Sprang never worked for Kane; Sprang sold his pages directly to DC (or National Periodical Publications, as it was then known). I completely agree that Finger, Ditko, Kirby, and too many others produced value for publishers far in excess of what they were ever paid. It's truly sad. |

The redirection of guilt; it work's every time! Of course, this wouldn't do a thing to prove that such behavior isn't unethical or even immoral. The simple truth is that work-for-hire contracts that stipulate that whatever you create, the company owns, shouldn't exist, regardless of the industry. The creator or creators should get full and accurate credit and a small percentage of all profits. Obviously the corporations should get the bulk of the profits (they foot the bills) but they also would be useless non-entities without the creative minds they employ. Of course deals like this exist TODAY, but should older creators be punished for having had the tough luck of being born into a less civilized time? I'd like to see the concept of financial/contractual reparations taking seriously. |

I read an interview with Sprang where he stated he only met Kane 1 time when he was working on Batman. It was just in passing and very brief. |

According to a 2004 interview with Jerry Robinson, both he and Bill Finger worked directly for DC beginning in 1940. Kane refused to increase their share of the money the strip brought in so the duo, who were being courted by other publishers, went to Jack Liebowitz, who put them on salaries rather than risk losing them. Ha, I never get tired of seeing this. Basically Bob Kane had the character concept but virtually everything else was created by Bill Finger, including the costume, batmobile, batcave, etc. Kane kept the myth of being sole creator for close to 30 years. |

The true creator of Batman Bob Kane may had the Lawyer that did the trick; but Finger did everything else ^^^ see batusi post above mine!
