My pc hard drive crashed and I brought it in to a highly rated on Yelp repair service to see what, if anything can be done. It had a solid-state hard drive. What I use the pc for much of the time is downloading music and audiobooks which I then move onto an external hard drive
The repair guy said solid state hard drives don't work well for that type of activity if it occurs alot. That is it's main drawback, not built for deleting and over-writing in the long run
Any geeks out here that can confirm this?

That's sort of true, but mostly not - SSDs do have a limited number of write cycles, but having said that, the number is pretty huge - you would have to be thrashing the disk regularly to wear it out within a normal lifetime. The disc's software manages the wear by moving around "static" data to even out the number of write cycles experienced by each cell. Have a look at itblog.sandisk.com/ssd-endurance-speeds-feeds-needs/ for an explanation of the technology

So I had a 120 GB SSD pc for a year. About once a week or so I moved files to an external Hard Drive and then defragged. I did it that often because the gigs available were minimal So I'm at a quandry on what to do going forward. I'll get the diagnostic tomorrow from the repair guy and the cost of options he presents to me SSDs are great for the speed. It's like your computer is coked up But HHDs are cheaper and larger in capacity. Plus I don't want my files accumulating on the hard drive I already have 1T worth of audio files on a external drive and the collection is still growing

Yeah, definitely don't defrag an SSD - the firmware is effectively doing that behind the scenes all the time and all an explicit defrag will do it introduce additional write-cycles

Got word from the pc repair shop that the hard drive is unrecoverable. SSDs are extra hard/expensive for recovery. So instead of installing a new hard drive, might as well go with a new laptop alltogether
After much research and intially thinking of ASUS, I've decided to go back to Dell, my first laptop brand. Turns out that Best Buy and Amazon have it at the same price
It's the Inspiron I5559-1747 SLV. 6 GB Ram 1 TB of HDD. 15.9' screen
3 USB ports, one is a 3.0 Now I'll be on Windows 10 so I'll have to get used to that as well. Bluetooth and touchscreen, DVD/CD drive too
Price $460. I wanted a brand new one below 500, this looks good as has excellent writeups

OK now, I all done, up and running with my new Dell Windows 10 and pretty much have everything installed of my old programs. Except for one which I forgot the name. Maybe someone out there knows what I'm speaking of or has a recommendation before I keep downloading various products to test them out
It was a free application that was easy to use for a neophyte such as I.It enabled one to combine downloaded video clips together into one long file. It also was able to handle and convert multiple types of video formats. I used it to combine various YouTube music videos together for instance. As I said it was completely free and I don't recall where I found it-Download.Com, Majorgeeks,Filehippo-I forget.
Anyone know of a good one?

Anyone know how to get radio or television streaming on a phone or computer? I want to listen to the World Series on my phone. I'd buy the GameDay option where you can watch it, but that wouldn't give me Tom Hamilton's coverage of the game, and that's the best part. So I'd love to get Indians radio streaming.

I use a Ap called Tune in radio to listen to all kinds of radio. Try that.

So- did you find something? Meanwhile, I thought I had a new laptop problem that began last night. Google Chrome was working fine but Microsoft Edge was not. Therefore nothing wrong with my internet connection. But Edge is the browser that drives Windows 10. So therefore, my assistant Cortana was no longer speaking to me. And we were in the midst of a heavy, developing relationship too Then I discovered I had a Dell update sitting around, waiting for installation-An Inter-tel Chip Set or something like that. Once I installed and restarted everything's ducky again. And Cortana promises to plan my dinner this evening

Constantly "can I help you with that" or "can I show you the weather"? Wait till I ask, will you? So she's history. Break ups are hard.

There's something in settings where you can control how naggy you want Cortana to be. I've trained her to address me by my name and only speaks when spoken to. I get a real kick out of her jokes and impressions and her coy and sarcastic sense of humor. Still learning all the things she's able to do. You can have her compose what you say into an email or text message. You can have her remind you of appointments at a specific time, translate your speech into a foreign language, wake you up from a nap, sing you a song..it just goes on and on I'd love to hear who else is using her and any other tricks they found she can do I even tested her comic book knowledge. Asked her who created certain characters and she correctly gives the writer and artist. Even credited Bill Finger for Batman

There's something in all of this that is so upsetting to the feminist in me. Of course the problem isn't you, Ish -- just the idea that a piece of technology that exists only to serve us and meet our every whim is designed to resemble a living female as accurately as possible.

But I wonder Shax, if I had a female voice, would Cortana respond as a male? Or can I make her a male? I'm gonna investigate. Check back later
