I never really liked his Next Men Art and I feel this was an extension of that style. Writing wise I thought it certainly lent nothing to the character, and kind of felt this was a money grab for him. Not that I blame him. This is a great line...

I far prefer retro projects like untold tales of Spidey and X-Men: Hidden years.. don't CHANGE continuity, but add to it and maybe give it a nudge or two

By Wikipedia: Uh, It seems it was more successful than I thought. Oh yeah, I didn't think it was considered a trainwreck more popularly by any means (just joking earlier about me being one of three people who liked it). Sometimes in smaller "fan circles" like here, a group strong opinion seems like by extension "that's how it went down" overall, but I don't think we're always really representative of the larger more casual reader population. On Amazon, the trade for it has 4 stars out of 5 for instance.

I was and still am a huge Byrne fan but this is probably my least favorite project of his. Like most others I feel it wasn't needed at all. The art was also substandard. I can't get over how bad Kraven looks on that cover above. (Though I suspect he was trying to make him look more like Ditko's.)

Sometimes in smaller "fan circles" like here, a group strong opinion seems like by extension "that's how it went down" overall, but I don't think we're always really representative of the larger more casual reader population. On Amazon, the trade for it has 4 stars out of 5 for instance. The problem is that I absolutely don't remember that from the beginning it was said that it was, let's say, another version of Spider-Man. I had always assumed that it was going to be some kind of huge retcon, like Birthright for Superman. If they had said right away that it was set in (googling) Earth-98121 the reactions would probably have been less harsh. This is also, I think, the problem with literary criticism of superhero comics. In theory it should be possible to analyze two distinct levels: a) the merits of the story per se b) how it relates to the character, his story etc. But since we are fallacious human beings we cannot separate the two levels. If we think the author is somehow doing a disservice to the character, we fail to enjoy the story. Ironically, someone who has never read anything about the character before might appreciate the story for its own merits. Let's imagine that Moore actually made Watchmen using Charlton's characters. Probably any discussion on the merits of the work would have been eclipsed by droves of fans complaining about how he had betrayed the essence of these historic characters. We'd still be arguing if Moore's Thunderbolt was actually the one from the original comics.

Good point, zaku. I’ve come across this. Example: my mother has, most probably, never read a Batman comic. She did see The Batman, and I’m pretty sure she saw the two Keaton movies. Now, we haven’t spoken at great length about any of those films, but I know she enjoyed them. Now, she no doubt had zero expectations other than the desire to enjoy the films. Yet some people, like myself, probably had expectations about how it pertained to Bat-Mythology, how true to the spirit of the comics it was, etc. So, different expectations. I am intrigued by the Mortal Kombat film. I know next to nothing about the games, so my expectation will simply be, will I enjoy it or not? But someone familiar with the lore, who may have played every game, will have a different set of expectations. Nothing wrong, just different perspectives. So, for someone with a passing interest in Spider-Man, and with zero knowledge of Lee/Ditko, may well approach Chapter One with a different mindset.

Never read it, but those covers... Dear Lord, how I dislike such overwhelming colour gradients. I get that the possibilities of computer colouring can be tempting and addictive, but for this type of comic-book art I much prefer flat colours.

You conveyed what I am thinking in a more articulate way than I would have. Too garish for me.

Did Byrne do the colours too? No, I believe it was Comicraft (if one site is accurate).
