Summary:Adam Starr and his Solar Legion of Star Warriors take on hoards of space pirates to keep the peace in the solar system.
Plot/Art: This is a tough one to judge as a pure comic book stand point, definitely being a situation where your mileage may vary. If you're a fan of kitschy pulp inspired sci-fi comics (like me) or if you're a huge Kirby fan and want a look at one of his earliest looks you'll probably really love this book...but for the casual reader just picking this up? I'm not certain how much you'll get out of this book. It's a simplistic plot of a space hero fighting pirates in space, there's zero characterization, the dialog is minimal, there are no motivations or back stories, no suspense and nothing really connecting the action scenes together and minimal back grounds art wise. For someone like me who just go ga-ga for the likes of Flash Gordon,Buck Rogers or even Space Ghost this book was a total win. I don't need a complex back story or character drama all the time, sometimes good guys doing good guy things just for the sake of being a hero is enough and this had that energy in spades. And from a historical point for Kirby fans it's definitely worth getting to see the sparks in 22 year old Jack Kirby's art that would be expanded on later on in his life. So if you fall into those two groups this will be a definite ten out of ten, but for others? I'm not so sure if this will hit for you.
One thing that was interesting for me is what exactly was Tom Scioli's role here? I've never seen the original stories that are collected here so I don't know how much if anything he changed artistically or composition wise. But it did look beautiful. There's a wonderful simplicity to it all that I just love.
