Shazam #3. Another near perfect issue by Waid & Mora. It has enough wacky stuff that fits the character perfectly but balanced with some modern seriousness. Waid is really nailing what makes these characters unique. This is the best Shazam titles since Power of Shazam. And Mora's art is just phenomenal!

Birds of Prey #1Written by Kelly Thompson Art by Leonardo Romero Summary: In order to save her adopted sister Sin, Dinah enlists the aid of Cass Cain, Big Barda, Zealot and...Harley Quin!?
Plot: I usually like to talk about the book in chronological order, and I try to avoid major spoilers...but that ending gave me an ear to ear grin. Let's just say that if you love Gotham Academy as much as I do then you need to pick this up. So, my reaction to the twist at the end over with I'll go back to the start and say that although this is pretty much your typical gather up the team kind of a plot it's well executed and has some pretty fun character moments as each team member is introduced. I know that some fans will be put off by the lack of Babs and Huntress but there is a plot point explaining the change up, sure, it's vague and mysterious now, but it seems like something that will be explained as the story progresses. I'm not sold on Harley being able to go toe to toe with Cass just because she's unpredictable but I'm not opposed to her very presence on the team. All in all, although light on plot the action was great and it had a fun tone so I'm all in on this book.
Art: I absolutely love Romero’s art in this issue. I've never experienced his work before but his visual style is perfect for the light tone of the book and the simple Toth like line work was just beautiful so I'm going to not only be looking forward to more here but also tracking down more of his work.

Peacemaker continues to be a riot, I loved the fight scene with the baby deathstrokes and the heart to heart with teen deathstroke was perfect.

Yeah, the event definitely played into the feeling of it going a little slow but even read together it's not as far forward plot wise as I'd expect by now. |

Ha, I almost tagged you in the review knowing your love of Gotham Academy. Thompson has said that the classic line up will come back latter on as well so you won't have to wait long. Until then though the team she went with was written well, I especially loved the interactions between Barda and Cass. |

It was the best New Comics Week that I’ve had for a while.
Peacemaker #5 and JSA #6 were some really great, fun comics!
Birds of Prey #1 was pretty good. I was a little wary, so I flipped through it before buying it. I like the art. It’s got a lot of my favorites - Barda, Dinah, Cass, Harley. I read a couple of pages where everybody was teasing Cass because she can’t tell a story. That made me giggle. So I decided to give it a try.
Scarlet Witch #8 was OK. I’ve been enjoying the series so far.
That leaves Batman #137 with the latest chapter of the Gotham War. I’m liking this cross-over quite a bit. It’s true that a lot of it is pretty stupid. Batman is way off-model, for starters. I’m just so happy that it’s not another cross-over where one of the villains is targeting the Bat-Family because he is so concerned that the entourage is bad for Batman. In this one, Batman himself targets the Bat-Family and easily dispatches some of them in one or two panels each. 🙄 That was pretty bad. I’m not recommending it for people who have a low tolerance for a certain amount of stupid crap in cross-overs. I like cross-overs IN THEORY and despite the dumb stuff, I’m seeing a lot that I like in Gotham War. SO FAR!

It was the best New Comics Week that I’ve had for a while. Peacemaker #5 and JSA #6 were some really great, fun comics! Birds of Prey #1 was pretty good. Grade:9/10 Holy Cow! Did they just do that? really??? I had no idea Black Canary had a sister, nor have I ever seen Big Barda act like Vandal Savage or Cassandra Cain talk, but I'm in. I don't have to say why and spoil anything. Also, fantastic art and I'm intrigued by Thompson's take on Harley. |
