Mr Romita Sr. has passed at age 93. Post artwork and any stories you remember about one of the ( I consider) founders of Marvel comics. The first comic bought for me was this book containing Romita artwork. This was the first non Kirby Fantastic Four book.

I think it would be great to share around our favorite covers and pages. I'll start. His first issue of Spider-Man, #39.

As a huge fan of John Romita's work on Spider-Man, it's a little strange that one of my favourite pieces of art by him is this drawing of Peter Parker and the gang outside the Coffee Bean cafe from a '70s Marvel calendar, rather than something from a comic book... It's hard to explain exactly why I like this picture so much, and there are surely countless other examples of Romita's actual work on a Spider-Man comic I could've shared instead. But I dunno...this drawing has the look of an old high school photo to me, with everyone smiling and looking young, with all the endless possibilities of youth before them (with the exception of Aunt May...ouch!). And just like a faded old high school photo, it evokes pleasently nostaglic feelings in me for a simpler time and reminds me of all those fantastic late '60s issues of Amazing Spider-Man that Romita drew. It's a wonderful piece of art.

I just mentioned yesterday in a FB discussion (before the news broke) that the only signed non-comic art I ever saw by Romita was this oddity (from NatLamp)

He did an admirable job replacing Kirby on the FF before Big John B took over.

For some odd reason, two of the characters that immediately come to mind for me when I picture Romita's art are Kraven and Man-Wolf: (Hey, you don't suppose Man-Wolf might show up in the upcoming Kraven film?)

He said killing Gwen was his idea, not Conways.

He said killing Gwen was his idea, not Conways. Love that clip and the relish with which he enjoys being the man who killed off Gwen Stacy. My understanding of it, from things I've read over the years, has always been that it was Roy Thomas who first suggested killing off a member of Spidey's supporting cast and between him and Gerry Conway they came up with Aunt May as a suitable candidate (although Conway has on occasion attributed this to John Romita). But after discussing it, both Conway and Romita thought it was a bad idea to kill Aunt May because it took away the element of May always babying Peter Parker, which they felt was a core part of the book. At Romita's suggestion, Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy were selected as more suitable candidates, with Romita favouring Stacy. Ultimately, Conway and Thomas agreed, and then Conway, with help from Romita and Gil Kane, came up with the story in which she would be killed (repordedly with Stan Lee's blessing, at least initially). So, while it was Romita who suggested that Stacy should die, I wouldn't say that it was completely all his idea.
