Rom is not an all time great series. It was a fun series that they did as much as they could with a lame toy. But it was a fun read, month after month and Sal always delivered on the art.So true. I'd just add that they so transcended the lame toy that many probably forgot that it was even a licensed property.

How does Micronauts compare? Could it be described the same way? I've never read either series, but I was always kinda curious about them as a kid. Micronauts was better, at least the initial story line. The story was good, even if it was as derivative as all get out, but the Michael Golden art was outstanding and the characters more compelling. But it was also a good comic based on a lame toy.

I had Rom #1-#75. Loved all that great Sal B art. And the later Ditko stuff too. Indeed. But, don't forget one issue ( #56) from Doc Bright

That "lame" toy was one of my favorites. I loved the way that it functioned, and the three attachments. I wasn't a HUGE fan of the comic, itself, but enjoyed it and loved the backstory of who ROM was and his mission vs. the Dire Wraiths. The toy itself had basically NO story information on the package, and the comic really helped to flesh it out. Conversely, my other favorite toy was the Space 1999 Eagle One, which I played with endlessly. I had never seen the tv show, and to this day, I can't sit through even one episode. I was better off without knowing the backstory for that one, I think.

By the way, this link gives me a "404 missing page" error, now. The Dire Wraiths have struck again. Edit: A corrected URL is here link

I heard over at CBR that Marvel now has rights to all the Hasbro stuff. So expect some GI Joe and Transformers as well. That's interesting because I read that Hasbro was going with Skybound for G.I. Joe and Transformers after their license with IDW is done with
Anywho, this is an amazing announcement and I will most definitely be buying the omnibus when it comes out. Hopefully Micronauts isn't too far behind either

Like ROM, Micronauts also ran as a back-up strip in Marvel UK's Star Wars comic, but in the late 70s and early 80s, prior to ROM. I liked Micronauts enough to read it back then, whereas I usually skipped ROM. Micronauts wasn't great, mind you, but as a kid I liked it much better than ROM and the artwork was always very good (was it Michael Golden?) I keep meaning to check out Micronauts again as an adult and see how it holds up.

Micronauts seemed more complex to me, as far as the depth of the characters and their worlds. Even if they did keep recycling Karza in the stories.

Micronauts was my all-time favorite series from Marvel during that time. It had its ups and downs, and the art ranged from the best with Michael Golden, Pat Broderick, Butch Guice, and Gil Kane, to some underwhelming jobs by Chaykin, Ditko and others. It had very complex and rich world building from Bill Mantlo, initially inspired by Star Wars, but quickly developed its own quirks and nuances. Honestly, the toy tie-in was very much secondary to the overall universe he built. It's interesting that Mantlo's creations... the Microverse, the Enigma Force, etc. outlived the Micronauts' various series, and were integrated as much as they could in the greater Marvel universe, without the actual toy license.

Looks like they just announced a Micronauts omnibus as well for April 2024.

I'd definitely pick these up if they're epic-style pricing and format. Calling it an Omnibus, though probably only if they hit Ollies since it'll be a 75-100 hardcover.

Really looking forward to the ROM: Spaceknight & the Micronauts Omnibuses next year. I never though either would ever be reprinted due to the copyright/licensing issues which had been holding up reprints for years. I believe that they have plans to reprint each of these series in their entirety. Definitely getting both sets of Omnis. I'm a big fan of both series, though didn't collect them as much as I would have liked back in the day due to being a kid & my financial limitations at the time And, I haven't read either of these titles since the '80's, given that my handful of original floppies are long gone. I liked how both ROM & Micronauts were firmly entrenched in the MU. And, as far as I'm concerned - even though both comics were based on previously released toys - ROM & Micronauts were/are Marvel characters.

I hope they're going to include The New Voyages in the last volume.
