Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) One of my favorite Showa era Godzilla movies to rewatch. I thought the mythology and world building were interesting. The demolition used during the fights scenes and the model city-scapes felt bigger and more impressive that the previous Toho kaiju films. The aliens turning into monkey men was kind of hilarious and reminded me of John Chambers special effects make ups in the original Planet of the Apes. Not only do we get the title characters fighting but we also get the reappearance of Anguirus plus a King Ceasar team up. The final fight scene is pretty epic and there's a surprising amount of blood during the climax.

I felt that was an slight overkill on TOHO Production. The coolest part of it is the special effects of MechaGodzilla's weapons ... and that's why I loved that film. Coolest Special Effects ... just watch my avatar ... especially his Space Beams.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) Taking place a year before the debut of Mechagodzilla this film wasn't nearly as good. It does however feature quite a few kaiju including the debuts of Jet Jaguar and Megalon as well as the return of Gigan with brief cameos of Rodan and Anguirus on Monster Island. Most of the special effects models and demolition are impressive but the story unfortunately isn't all that interesting. The highlight of the film is certainly the campy all out kaiju brawl at the climax of the film with Godzilla and Jet Jaguar teaming up to defeat the Gigan and Megalon.

I agree with your assessment here. Very Campy and Megalon is one of my least favorite kaiju and looks hideous to me. I've watched that film a couple of months ago and the story is lackluster at best. Your review is spot on!

The War of the Gargantuas (1966) From the original director of Godzilla and Rodan as well as a sequel to his previous film Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965). This movie opens with a very Ray Harryhausen inspired giant octopus although this one isn't stop motion. It attacks a ship but is stopped by another kaiju the green Gaira who defeats the giant octopus and then destroys the ship. Gaira thought to be the Frankenstein gargantua from the previous movie attacks villages along the coastline. It's eventually confronted by the army as well as the gargantua from the previous film now known as Sanda. The action is exciting and the pacing is never dull which keeps the film interesting throughout. Overall this was pretty fun and I definitely want to go back and check out the previous movie.

@mechagodzilla one of my favorite bands Devo actually covers that song. I'll listen to that song in a minute ... and thanks for sharing that. I've like Devo music and I did not know that they did this song too.
