A twist on the other what comics have you read/purchased. I just bid on the 4 issue set of Layton’s Hercules. I have not read it since it came out but recently I have been obsessed with getting this series. I hope it’s as good as I remember.

eBay had a 5.5 CGC Detective Comics #199. With two days to go, it was at only $100. I bid $150, but I can’t keep spending lots of money on comic books just because they’re a good deal. I think it eventually went for $250. I’m sure it’s worth $500 or $600. If they listed it for that, they probably would’ve got it if they waited a few months.

Just was outbid this morning on From Hell: Master Edition (the colorized version). My copy of the series, from the late 90s, was long ago lent out and never returned before I moved to a different part of the country, so I've been looking for a reasonably priced replacement the last few months. I vowed not to go higher than $40 CAD including shipping (about $15-25 less than brand new) since it wasn't a must have item for me and it was slightly damaged on one corner. Of course I was outbid with about 10 minutes remaining, but was disciplined enough not to get into a bidding war. Oh well, I'll get it someday for a good price

It's probably been close to 20 years since I last bought anything off Ebay. I picked up the complete run of the 1970s Freedom Fighters series, all in mint condition, for $30 plus postage. As I recall, I was the only bidder. These days, I'll only buy comics online from LoneStar or a similar site with a proven track record of honest grading and reasonable pricing.
Cei-U! I summon the caution!

When I buy things off ebay I usually just get stuff that can be bought now ("buy it now"), dont want to suddenly get sniped and outbid at the last second.

It’s been easily 15 years since I’ve purchased anything via eBay. But when I did I never concerned myself being sniped. I’d bid what what I was willing to pay (including the shipping) and bid. If I got it, fine. I’d not, also fine.

eBay is a last resort for me when it comes to buying comics. I have enough comic stores in the city to scour (if I wanted to) or call my friends up and pick up a book if it they can find it. It's nice having a group of comic friends that help each other out. I'm not really buying that many comic back issues these days. I prefer HipComics over eBay. While they have a smaller selection it's easier to find items there.

I haven't used ebay since 2020 when I was sheltering in place and had some money to burn. I do occasionally bid on things in the Lonestar weekly items, but I usually don't bid much and am outbid by the end of the first day. Occasionally something gets ignored any my low bid slides through (usually a low grade red dress cover on a non-hero book).
In the current auction, which ends tomorrow, I put bids on a few items, none of which I currently have the high bid on...
-a Hopey sketch by Jamie Hernandez
-a lot of 4 issues of Hot Wheels, 3 of which featured Toth art (the 4th had Neal Adams)
-a high grade copy of Critters #1
-a low grade copy of Lois Lane #106
the auctions start Monday night/Tuesday morning after the previous auctions end, I was outbid on all 4 lots by Tuesday night.

Generally when I'm looking for something in particular, I'll use Mycomicshop as a baseline, and see if I can do better on ebay. I most often by lots that are cheap reader copies, or sometimes a make my own lots if someone has a single comic I want for a good deal so the shipping isn't ridiculous
My last purchase was a couple weeks ago I got Iron Man #14 and # 47 for about $40. I'm not a grader, but I suspect that was about 1/3 less than I would have paid at mycomicshop.
Every now and then I'll put in an order with mycomicshop, midtown, westfield, or even mile high if there's a synergy of a sale and stuff I want.

The vast majority of my comic purchases are done via eBay. I haven't got a comic shop anywhere near me really, so especially for back issues it's my only convenient option. I use Ebay a lot generally, for clothes and records mainly. I've had thousands of transactions on the platform -- both as a buyer and seller -- and never had a problem with any of them really. It's one of my favourite shopping sites.

I have not read it since it came out but recently I have been obsessed with getting this series. I hope it’s as good as I remember. I re-read the original mini (plus the follow-up from a few years later for the first time) a few years ago ( mini-review here). I thought it held up pretty well, even if I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I did when I first read at the age of about 14.
As to the main question, the last time I bought anything off of ebay was last November, and that was an unusual case (to buy a rather inexpensive copy of the Marvel Snapshots Sub-mariner book that I'd been wanting for quite some time from a seller in the UK). Before that, it had been several years since I'd bought anything off of ebay. However, for a few years, from about 2008 to 2012 or 2013, I did most of my online book-buying on ebay. It was kind of like a golden era, when I was finding tons of really inexpensive used or remaindered copies of comics tpbs and regular books with very reasonable postage offered by sellers in both North America and Europe. After that, international postage rates started to go up, esp. for independent/private sellers, which pretty much priced out pretty much anything I could find.

It's probably been a decade since I bought anything on Ebay and comics would be closer to 20 years ago. Probably would have been one of the Zenith trade collections. I got one on there and another at ABE Books. I already had the other 3.
The last actual comic book I think I bid on was an issue of Aquaman or Adventure (with Aparo Aquaman stories), where I lowballed and was the only bidder and the seller claimed it was "water damaged" and backed out of the sale. The fact that my bid was below the "Buy it now" price had nothing to do with it, I'm sure.
I did more buying of films and tv shows on eBay, until they ran off the bootleggers. I used to hunt for non-commercially available stuff, like The Billion Dollar Brain (not on VHS, at the time, in the US) and the European cut of Legend. Once DVD became more widespread, you could get more of that kind of thing commercially, in quality prints. I did used to frequent iOffer, before they shut that down, for films that were not available in US commercial releases, particularly foreign films, like The 3 Fantastic Supermen and the 1960s Fantomas films, or the Dr Mabuse films.

The completist in me just bid on and won Layton’s second Hercules series for 1.99. I haven’t begun the first series but figure I’ll read all 8 issues together.
