The Bull is an inhumanly strong prisoner held in Australia, though not an Aussie or a Brit if his syntax is any indication: “What good freedom if Bull have no boat? Bull can’t swim back to America!” the Fly is a Dwight Frye-type (typically, he is treated poorly and doesn't make the cover, just like his fellow victim of low self-esteem and a lack of self-advocacy, the Highwayman) who somehow is able to climb the stone walls of his New York prison cell (bitten by a spider infected with the bubonic plague, perhaps); the Highwayman, a superior marksman, is about to be hanged when he is sprung; Cap’n Salt is a pirate and “Indian” a “renegade tracker.” My Tomahawk collection does not yet include this issue, so I had not noticed this, but this contains a glaring anachronism. Tomahawk is set during the Revolutionary War (or earlier), and Australia was not settled as a British penal colony until 1788. In fact, one of the possible uses for Australia considered by the British government was to allow it to be settled by American loyalists displaced by the war. Nice catch, foxley. You’d think that they would have known that, given that they knew their 18th century history. I mean, who knew that the colonials used elephants as bobsleds?  |

My Tomahawk collection does not yet include this issue, so I had not noticed this, but this contains a glaring anachronism. Well, errors can creep in even the best researched works. I'm guessing the writers weren't as strong as on non-American history.  |

In which I keep taking a look at the previous day's picks (well until the weekend when I seldom make it here for long). For whatever it's worth. Which really isn't all that much.
Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite - By all rights I should hate this pick. But I don't. For reasons we shall see later. Foreshadowing or spoilers...you make the call!
Red Hood and Black Mask - This is a good fifteen years after I gave up on Bat books. But if that's Jason Todd I'm morally opposed to the little punk being alive. And I want my money back!
THE SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER-VILLAINS - I loved the SSSV when I was a kid. Which is why we don't let kids run things. Because they're dumb. That said, I've not seen this version. But I'm not sure I like Manhunter being there...because, I say you he dead.
Monster Society of Evil - We'll likely see them again. There's a lot of foreshadowing today. Though the future is always in flux.
Roberto Rastapopoulos and Allan Thompson - I've only ever read the first three Tintin books. So I don't know these fellers. Some of these days I may make it back to Tintinville.
The Sinister Six - Apparently Day Two just took a look at the current iteration of my list.
Evil Mutants - I was an adult by the time He-man and company came along. So I got nothing here. I do feel like there had been evil mutants before this though.
The Frightful Four - I considered The Frightful Four, mostly from nostalgia. So I'm glad to see them here. Paste-Pot Pete was just awful.
The Ani-Men - I vaguely remember these guys. Did they appear somewhere besides Iron Man? Because I never read more than a handful of Iron Man issues in this era. But good for them for showing up. I'm sure their mothers are proud. Oh...never mind. Rob has them too. And I remember then from Daredevil. Still...I'm sure their moms are happy they're working.
Braniac and Luthor's Army - Have I mentioned lately how much I hate Crisis and how awful a story I think it is? Because if I haven't, I should. It is kind of cool to see all those baddies drawn by Perez though.
Savage Land Mutates - I've read that issue, but it's been a long time. Good for them for showing up and mutating. Amphibious should hang with Stegron and the Lizard.
Dormammu and Loki - It's been sooooo long since I've read those books. It's kind of cool to see Dormy "teaming" up with someone. But these guys are too egotistical to work together for long.
The Terrible Trio - I'm so happy to see them here. Honestly, I should hate these guys. I despise this era of Batman. But for some reason I've always LOVED The Terrible Trio. They were perilously close to making my list. And maybe they should have. They'd make awesome Megos.
The Ranger Killers - I'm glad that someone loves Tomahawk. I mean we all need love. I got nothin' on these guys because I've only read any Tomahawk after Frank Thorne took over. I love that the one is just named...Indian. I mean the creative juices were really flowing when they came up with that name.
Sabac, Eclipso, Dr.Sivana and Lex Luthor - This was well after I'd stopped reading Big Two long underwear books. So I got nothin'.
The Folding Circle - What happens when they're folded. Are they then the half-circle? I've never read an issue of New Warriors. This was after I'd stopped reading Marvel except for select creators. But good for them for finding a job.
The Vendetta - I need to re-read The Inferior Five. I don't even remember these guys.

The Wrecking Crew /cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/23981564/defenders_wrecking_crew.jpg) The Defenders issues at this time has some amazing Gil Kane covers, which combined with the beautiful Sal Buscema interiors made them irresistable, both to my 13 and 58 year old selfs. I dont know what it is about the crew that does it for me, maybe cos they just dont quit, they just stick to their schtick. Or maybe its Sal having them flying off screen in a trail of teeth...whichever, you always know youre in for a knock down dragout fight, no super clever malarkey going on here, just big boy fisticuffs with a side order of beatdown. |

11. The Triumvirate of Terror11. The GatherersYes, I went there. I admit it: I like the Gatherers! I've always been a sucker for alternate universe stuff, and The Gatherers have a great premise. They are all Avengers from universes where the Avengers were defeated and their world destroyed. Now they have banded together to try and stop it happening to other universes. Sounds like good guys, right? One problem: it turns out that their leader, Proctor, is actually the person destroying each reality they are trying to "save," and The Gatherers are all dupes who don't realize they are actually the bad guys causing the very apocalypse they are trying to prevent. The most frustrating thing is that at the end of the story, a number of The Gatherers are unaccounted for, and most have never been mentioned again. Talk about your loose ends!  |

I thought it was a great concept and a good storyline but that Harras fumbled the execution towards the end and drew it out way too long. But I did like them. -M |

#11 Villainy Incorporated from Wonder Woman #28, 1948I first came across this group in the WW reprint contained in Adventure Comics #416. WW sure had amassed a solid rogues' gallery; these villains had all faced off against her previously in Wonder Woman or Sensation Comics. The leader here is Eviless, and all of these characters exist in one form or another to this day, as does Villainy Inc.  Be careful what you wish for, Steve

Human Torch & Acrobat Strange Tales #106, Marvel, 1962  A few explanations for the vote. One, the team name. Two, the berets. Three, the matching outfits with the prominent "2" on the sleeves. Human Torch left the FF to become a bank robber. Of course it turned out he was only playing along with Carl Zante to figure out his plan. But he was pretty deep undercover, so much so that even his thought balloons made it seem like he was now a bank robber.
