Worlds Finest #9Written by Mark Waid Art by Dan Mora Summary: Batman and Superman are struggling with how to train Boy Thunder but their efforts might be for naught when the Joker appears. Plot: Waid continues full speed ahead with this fun, silver age inspired adventure comic that artfully combines fantastic action beats with a heart felt coming of age story. While the scene with Superman going from admonishing David on his over use to consoling him when he reveals why he was the only one to escape his world definitely stole the book with its emotional impact Batman's approach with logic over heart was great in its own way. While Batman's scene lacked the emotional punch of Superman's it provided a fantastic look at how these two heroes see the world and how they approach similar situations. So far the only weak spot is the villain team of Joker and a guy called Key, I don't know if Key is some silver age baddie I'm just not familiar with or a new guy Waid has come up with but either way there has been zero build up of him so I have no idea who he is or what he wants so every scene with him in it is a total waste of page space. Still and all this is definitely one of my favorite books out right now. Art: Everything about Mora's art is an absolute masterclass on how to draw a superhero comic. The action is dynamic, and all the tiny details like facial expressions and texturing on the clothing and capes are perfect. Every panel is an absolute joy to behold which really makes the book feel special. Grade:8/10

The Key is an old Justice League villain.

Nightwing #98Written by Tom Taylor Art by Daniele Nicuolo Summary: Dick Grayson gets his own 5th Dimensional Imp, Nite-Mite! And instead of causing Dick trouble he's here to help. Plot: I could gush about how fun the fake out wedding between Dick and Babs was, but the real high point of this awesome issue was summed up in the following dialogue: "Bitewing, you can talk?" "Can Talk...thank you. Feed me, save me. Thank you." "No, thank you Haley, you're a good dog." "good human" Talking animals are a dime a dozen...but that conversation between Dick and his dog, granted magical powers by Nite-Mite was just perfect in every way. If you can read that with out smiling then you have no soul and should just give up comics. I love this book, it's really just so damn fun. Art: There are definitely some places where I missed Redundo's art as the realism just wasn't there in Nicuolo's art...but his cartoony style fit all the Nite-Mite scenes perfectly. Grade:9/10

The Key is an old Justice League villain. I figured with the silver age vibes he must have been an attempt to bring back an old character....but it just didn't work. There just isn't any build up or characterization so he just comes across as boring.

WORLD'S FINEST #9. Pretty much a perfect comic. Beautiful art by Mora. Great story by Waid with Superman Batman & the original Titans helping out Boy Thunder. I agree with thwhtguardian that the choice of villains is a bit underwhelming. This a book that I will re-read multiple times in the coming years. NIGHTWING #98. Just an outstanding fun book. Taylor just continues to shine on this title. Even with a "silly" idea of a 5th dimensional imp hero worshipping Nightwing he pulls off the concept perfectly. This continues to be my favorite DC title. STARGIRL #1. After the New Golden Age Special I wasn't sure if I would like this title but Johns did an amazing job. He made me "accept" the concept of missing sidekicks as an interesting story. NAMOR #2. Just an amazing concept with great story and art. Namor wanting to save the world after a catastrophe. And the mystery of what happened to Jim Hammond also continues.

There’s a reason he was never recruited for any version of the Injustice Society.

majestic and The Captain , did either of you pick up the Cap and Winter Soldier special? While I liked actually getting to learn who and what the circle was about...I don't know if it made the threat they pose in Sentinel of Liberty any more real. They're still head and shoulders above whatever is being done with White Wolf in Symbol of Truth but that's not saying much.

It’s in my pull bag at my LCS, but I haven’t been able to make it up there to pick it up yet. Might be able to get there tomorrow, but if not, I’ll just let it sit there until next Wednesday when new books come out again.

I really wasn't looking forward to this... I hate things like 5th dimension Imps in my Nightwing comics.. they're find for campy Silver age stories, but I was very annoyed at the thought. I was also totally wrong. Tom Taylor made it work... quite well, in fact. He's clearly amazing. OTOH, I'm still not really liking Batman vs. Robin #3 was as expected from issue 2.. Batman running the gauntlet of brain washed ex-Robins, each one aired out their gripes about Batman's 'parenting' along the way. I really want to get to the part where Damian saves the day and they get back to good Damian stories, please.

Couple indy books I haven't seen mentioned yet...
Crashing #3 really picked up. This is some story.. it's set in Boston (at least I assume it's Boston, they talk about Mass General) where there are superheroes, but they're at the 'are Superheroes the problem or the solution?' phase. The main character is a brilliant doctor with a checkered past that saves an injured super powered person against hospital, while her husband is a city councilman and the leader of a movement to have a superhero registration thing. Oh, she's also a drug addict with a dark past and some secrets. REALLY REALLY good book... top of the pile when it comes out right now. The art is a bit inconsistent, but it actually fits the story really well, so it's ok.
Just starting up is Mark Russell's latest from Ablaze Travelling to MarsIn a energy starved near future, a giant gas deposit is discovered on Mars, first one there claims it. The main character is a manager of a pet store in Alabama and has terminal cancer, so he volunteers for a one way trip to get there first. Mark Russell is amazing. Just the start of the story, but seems really promising.

It was super wholesome and just plain fun from start to finish. And I agree about Batman Vs Robin, it's so weird that Waid is knocking it out of the park in Worlds Finest...but is just this side of readable with Batman Vs. Robin.

thwhtguardian, finally got around to reading the Cap/Winter Soldier Special. It was fine for what it was, and I have to be honest when I say that I’m good with what they’re doing as long as they keep a certain crimson-masked Nazi out of the book. He’s long past his expiration date, and I can’t think of a good story involving him in years.
