As others have said, first things is to see if a cover leaps to mind when I read the topic. It could be x cover fits perfectly, let's do that cover, or more broadly x title, x character, or x artist has covers that might fit that theme, and if so then I look at those covers. If I can't think of one, or I don't like the ones I thought of or found in that step, then I will start a broader search, usually using google image search with the search parameters "comic book covers (insert topic)" to see what comes up and then riff of off that. Once I have a cover chosen, I go to mycomicshop to get the link because I know the link will be usable and show up, and those images are usually of a decent size to display well. On rare occasions I will use images form elsewhere like pinterest, or take the image I found somewhere and put it in my imgur page to use. I don't usually give much thought to how many votes I will get or who will vote for it, I just pick a cover I like that fits the theme, or if I can't find one I really like, I'll go with one that fits the theme that I don't hate (not every topic resonates with me, especially when it's a single artist topic of an artist I am not a big fan of). I have certain "go to" artists or genres I probably choose more often, but that's more to do with the fact I am more familiar with those and they come to mind first than a conscious choice to go with those. Overall though, I try not to spend more than 5-10 minutes max picking my cover for the week and if I can't get one in that span initially, I will put it on hold and come back later when I have the chance to spend more time.
For example, this week's beefcake theme, the first thing that came to mind when I read the topic w/o thinking about it al all was all the shirtless or torn up shirt Spirit covers by Eisner displaying his chest and musculature, because I am a fan of Eisner and the Spirit and those covers are familiar to me not because I said hey let's go with an Eisner Spirit cover and see what I can find as an active choice. From there I did a quick scroll through some Spirit covers and then made my choice.

Much of what foxley said applies to my approach as well, i.e., if one comes to mind immediately, I'll go with that if it hasn't already been posted; if not, then I do a little searching - the 'Browse by cover subject' option Lone Star's (mycomicshop.com) advanced search page is really useful in that regard. And yeah, I try to avoid posting a cover that's too similar to others already posted, or one from a series that's already been posted.

No fixed method. I just go with the flow on that particular week, and sometimes there's no flow at all.

Usually I think of favorite covers from comics in my own collection (which spans decades). In fact, I have a specific gorgeous cover in mind that I've been dying to post for a few years now, but unfortunately the right topic hasn't presented itself! One day...
There have been exceptions. IIRC there was one contest about Slaine and I was like uh oh, what is this?!? So in that case I looked up covers online and chose one that appealed to me, but then I saw someone else had already posted it. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat...finally I found one that appealed to me and hadn't been posted yet.

If I think of one immediately, I post it, like many other have said. Otherwise, I often go to the GCD and do a Story Title or Keyword search on covers.
This week, I thought of the cover I posted immediately. Last week, for "stripes", I searched for cover appearances by the character "Stripesy" and chose the best one.

It took me a while to come up with something for stripes. Was going to pass, but then saw the Tigra cover which also had stripes in the background.

I only participate if I can recall one from memory. I then use mycomicshop.com to find the cover.

I'm another one who usually posts only if the topic reminds me of some cover I've seen before, whether through reading or just seeing it on the stands or online. Sometimes that memory is so vague that I'll have to search to find the specific cover I have in mind but I don't think I've ever searched by topic just to find one that fits. Not that I think there's anything wrong with doing it that way, I just happen to have fallen into the habit I describe.
edit: perhaps this goes without saying, but I try to think of a cover that I actually like, not one that just fits the subject. But I imagine this is true of everyone, since we want to share what we think is a nice cover with the rest of the forum - and maybe even get a vote or two!

Back when I did participate in the contest, if something didn't immediately spring to mind from my own collection, I usually wouldn't post something. Once in a long while, I would Google the prompt, which would typically bring up a cover that actually WAS in my collection, just not one that came to me right away.

I Haven't participated in the contest for years -- in fact, we might've been back on the old forum last time! But my self-imposed rule was that I could only post covers of comics that I owned, but within that "rule" it was usually whatever came into my head.

On the rare occasion that I play, it's because the prompt reminds me of a specific book. I never actively search for a cover. That’s pretty much my approach 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time, I’ll have to dig out something, so I’ll check the covers for, say, 2000 AD or the JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE - and I’ll usually find something, maybe even a cover I’d forgotten or not seen before.

I have no real method. Like most here, I see the contest and think of what pops in my head. Since its posted while I'm at work so there's usually a few posts uploaded and I work from there. I do tend to stay away from "key issues" as they've become repetitive over the years. Also I want to showcase comics that would never show up from anyone else. I like to use lot of small press stuff because the variety is better than the Big 2. Also I like to push the boundaries a bit and go close to a NSFW if it fits the contest, so small press works for me.
