I supposed to pick them up Sunday from my friend Jesse at the Jim & Dan Comic & Toy Show, but I just won 13 issues of Miller's Daredevil run (169, 170, 171, 172, 176, 178, 179, 184, 185, 186, 189, 190, 191) from his weekly FB auction today for a total of $45, so working out to a little more than $3 an issue (they individually ranged from $1 to $8). In comparison, Lonestar lowest ask for a copy of 169 on their site is $41.50 plus shipping, so I think I did ok on the bunch. He had few more Miller DD's up, but I had copies of those already. I've been slowly putting this run together the last year and a half or so after I got a low grade 158 from Jesse. Not sure I'll be able to swing a 1st Elektra (168) unless I luck into an affordable low-grade copy like I did with 158, but we'll see. I'll post pics of these (and anything I get there) post show on Sunday sometime.

These weren't a purchase, but a lovely care package A-OK from our own Icctrombone that showed up in my mailbox this afternoon. Thank you so much for your kindness George. Getting random comics joy in the mail box always brings a smile to my face. Ironically, I had just snagged a copy of DD 170 yesterday in the FB group auction, but I messaged Jesse and told him to pay that copy forward to someone else in that FB group since George sent one in this batch and I have no need for 2 copies. I'm really excited about that Millie red dress cover too. -M

This is the first day of my Vacation and I'm all alone since my wife went to Chile to visit family until next Wednesday. I celebrated by going to several far away comic stores. I didn't get a lot , but that's part of my strategy to purge many of my books and only buy what I'm collecting. Today - I Got these low grade books for .50 cents I got the following for a buck each.

Ironically, I never got around to reading it but that passes the statute of limitations for being a comic reading slacker, so I had to send it to you. It looks like a Beatles cover also, Enjoy!

Well, it's been a hot minute since I posted something here. June 1st marked my first comic-hunting expedition since last November. I won't get into details, but between the tax man and the wife hitting her insurance out-of-pocket maximum for the entire year well before the end of Feb. 2024 (less than six weeks into the new year!), the hobbies have taken a bit of a back seat, and I'm quite sure that I fully contributed to more than one doctor's BMW payment.
Anyways, with that in the rear view mirror, I'm finally dipping my toe back in the comic safari routine.
As usual, lots of mixed-bag stuff here- purchased at a local shop-- I found 11 of 12 issues of Camelot 3000 for 49 cents apiece (issue #12 was there as well, but it was coverless, so I skipped it). Also found a few more issues of Young All-Stars for the same price, which I am trying to complete (along with Infinity, Inc.) Also found a bunch of Gold Key and Whitman variants of Turok-- another series I'm working on, but a long way off from completing-- Found a few very nice DC 25-cent issues, as well as a black cover 100 pager that has to be in at least 6.5 condition-- the spine is virtually flawless apart from a few color flecks on the spine corners. Other than that, the spine is not crushed or rolled, the book is flat, glossy, and gorgeous. Except for the Teen Titans issue, I already had the other three, but these are much better copies, so I consider them upgrades to my existing horde. A few odds & ends wraps up the haul from the shop, including a Spire book that I didn't have.
Apart from that, my Charlton itch was scratched when Crimebuster called me a couple of months back and had sourced several for me during his various comics outings. I always have to thank Scott for looking out for me-- he always seems to find some great books, and I appreciate him keep an eye out for the Charlton stuff. The last two issues pictured above are Trenchcoat Brigade #1 & #2, which I also picked up on my store visit. Still looking for 3 & 4, though.

It's going to take me a bit to sort, organize and take pics, but this is what I came home with from the Jim & Dan Show today. Part of it was the stuff I got from Jesse in the FB group, part of it was an artist there with Jesse today selling off part of his brother's comic collection because his brother didn't want it any more so it was getting bulked out and there were several (5-7) longboxes of stuff priced at 3/$1 (of which I came away with 75 comics for $25. Everything else I got today was either $1 or $2 an issue, the short box came free from Dave, that first artist/dealer... -M ahem 75 not 765 (grrrr typos)

Here's the first batch of stuff I brought home today-this is the stuff I had gotten via Jesse's Gem City FB group auction (including those Miller DD's I mentioned) that I picked up from him at the show today not stuff bought at the show today... Starting with the dozen Miller Daredevils I got... The other Marvel books-X-Men 150 is one of the issues I had as a kid as I try to recreate my childhood comic collections... some misc. Indy stuff... That Flash Gordon issue leaves me with needing only 2 issues to complete that King/Charlton/GK run. As a bonus, it features Rich Buckler's 1st professional art in a back up story about George Washington. The Thrilling Science Fiction book is a reprint book and contains a Matt Baker story (as well as Reed Crandall, Krigstein, Wood, and more). Some misc. DC including the Millennium Ed reprint of the 1st Question some Bat-related books... Some GLs... The Metamorpho mini by Mark Waid and Graham Nolan... and some Superman stuff... And that's that batch. I'll be updating lists on these for a bit; I may or may not start on the other books tonight, if I do I will post more tonight, if not tomorrow or Tuesday. -M

Ok batch 2, these all came from the same dealer and were $2 each. A whole batch of Kubert war books. Finished my run of Blitzkrieg, and after these I only need 4 issues to complete the run of Unknown Soldier after it changed titles from Star Spangled War Stories. Another dealer had a 50 cent bin, but these were the only books I found in there... that same dealer also had $1 bins, and these came from those... a 12 cent Archie with Veronica in a red dress... some Batbooks (the Joker issue was actually from a different dealer but was the only book I got there) and some misc. DC books...the DCCP came form the previous dealer, the others from 2-3 other dealers I only got a couple books form each. Excited for the Wanted #7 as it reprints a GA Kubert Hawkman story I don't have in any other format. and from a different dealer's dollar bins, I got these two Kubert Sgt. Rock beauties... That's it for this batch. -M

Last batch for tonight, this is the $2 books I got from the very first dealer I went to, the one who also had the 3/$1. I'll sort and take pics of the 3/$1 stuff tomorrow. Some $2 Batbooks... Some Flash & GL, plus a Lois Lane... Some Teen Titans/Titans... and some World's Finest... so the rest tomorrow sometime, all that's left is the 3/$ books, but there's a bunch of them to get through. -M

Ok time for those 3/$1 books, I am going to break them into 3 groups by "theme"-all 70+ books were DC issues (Dave's brother was a big DC collector, there was some Marvel stuff too but it wasn't stuff I was actively looking for and very little indy, most of it I either already had if it was stuff that interested me, or didn't fall into anything I was interested in. The three basic groups are: Titans, Superman and Misc. DC. First up, all the Titan related books I got out of the 3/$1 bins: Late era Perez New Titans issues 1 and 3 of JLA/Titans by Phil Jimenez-I had randomly found #2 at the Roma $1 comic liquidation a week or two back so this was the rest of the series an arc from the '96 Teen Titans series featuring the current version of the original Titans and a large chunk of the '99 Titans series (#1 was in the $2 books, the rest of the first 20 issues of the series in the 3/$1 boxes, and I snagged them all) That's it for the Titans phase, next up a handful of Superman related books... -M

3/$1 Superman goodness-The Ambush Bug issue of Action was one of Dave's favorites and he was gushing excitedly about McFarlane Toys doing an Ambush Bug figure complete with a Cheeks accessory (I seem to remember we had someone using Cheeks as their avatar for a long time in our early years, Repitlisaurus maybe? But they haven't been active in a while). That lead to a long conversation about DC toys, including us both gushing over the Bug from the Super Powers line and talking about Plaid Stallions recent post about it as well (which we had both seen) and making custom DC figures from the old Marvel Toy Biz line (The Plaid Stallions post by Brian had his custom Blue Beetle made from a Toy Biz Daredevil he had done in the 90s with the Bug, upcoming JSA figures from McFarlane and the new Dr. Fate Mego figure we both wanted but neither of us had seen in the wild. All the while I was browsing through the bins pulling out comics to buy. That's it for Supes, and "Toy Talk," on to misc. DC. -M

Last batch of the 3/$1 books and last books of yesterday's Haul. A bunch of various DC titles. I'll probably never have the chance to own the original SSWS issues with Mademoiselle Marie, but Dave did have the 2010 one shot revival (I have the Our Army at War and Our Fighting Forces one-shots that happened at the same time but never found this one before). Some more of the Wally Flash... a little bit of GL... and some post-Grell Arrow, I really like the character of Connor and Aparo was on art immediately after Grell left, but I've never really read this era so 3 for a buk is the right price to samle a large chunk of the Hex issues I needed to complete the run, I think I just need 4 issues now... and a couple of Batbooks featuring Wildcat, Mike Wieringo is a personal favorite artist (another who passed way too soon), but I never read much of his Robin stuff, so I snagged that one and that's all she wrote for yesterday's haul. It was a fun show, there was more to explore at the show and it was open for another 2 1/2 hours after I left, but my depleted budget and my old hips telling me I had spent too long walking on concrete indicated it was time to leave after being there for 3 1/2 hours. -M
