Went to local shop, got a good deal on some Spectre issues done by Ostrander and Mandrake. Issue 1 and issues 7-10, all for a buck a piece in perfect shape. Have heard this is a good run and wanted to see what they were like. Really enjoyed the first issue. Also picked up Batman #357, first app of Killer Croc and Jason Todd. Was a fair price and I see it selling quite high online so I will be flipping that and putting the money towards something I really want. Attachment Deleted

I was never a fan of cover gimmicks in general, but I love glow in the dark stuff, especially as a kid in the 70's, so the glow in the dark covers always got me. -M

The jungle person books are pretty fun, but it could get hard to distinguish the girl in the leopard skin bikini from the one in the tiger skin bikini from the one in the giraffe skin bikini. Still, as long as they're swinging through the jungle in a bikini fighting the greedy hunters and evil witch doctors, its a good time. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up . @ Paulie: those are pretty sweet! Great pick up!

My wife picked this up at a thrift shop - not a comic, a hardcover book about the history of comics: The author's British, and it looks good so far - I haven't caught a mistake yet!

I had that book at some point, a friend, who was a manager at a B&N at the time gave it to me for Christmas, must have been the mid-late 90s if memory serves. I know it had a lot of great illustrations, but I never really dove into the prose as my few samplings of it gave me the impression it was rather dense and dry. Could have been a mistaken impression based on a small sample size though. Hope you enjoy it.

Guess what I finally tracked down! Woot! I am now just missing the 1981 calendar to have the full set of classic Marvel calendars. This Dr. Strange calendar from 1980 is similar to the 1979 Hulk calendar in terms of format, as the 12 illustrations recreate key moments from Doc's past, in chronological order. So it starts with his training with the Ancient One, then fighting Nightmare for the first time, then Dormammu, Eternity, etc. through the key moments in Doc's history up to that point. As with the other calendars, one of the coolest parts is seeing the amazing art from Marvel's top artists, many of whom never really worked on Doctor Strange in the comics. For instance, there are illustrations from Bill Sienkievicz and John Byrne among others. Those others also include this back cover by Frank Miller! And this depiction of Doc assisting the Avengers against Surter and Ymir from Avengers #61, as rendered by the great Avengers artist George Perez! There's also a sweet drawing of Dr. Strange fighting Dracula by none other than Gene Colan. Who else? I forgot to take a picture of that one, though.

Went to a comic store today that I don't get a chance to visit very often. Their back issue supply kind of leaves something to be desired if you're looking for specific issues. However, they have a huge array of 50 cent and $1 bins that are filled with all sorts of stuff that probably shouldn't be in there. Basically, they sell keys at high prices and then sell everything else really cheap, which means you can find some deals if you're really patient. Today I spent my time looking through their $1 bins. They had a ton of stuff I wish I had been able to find last year or the year before when I was working on my Superman collection - just stacks and stacks of Bronze Age issues of Action, Superman, World's Finest and Superman Family. I did manage to come away with a lot of sweet stuff, though, including one beat up key and one very rare and very obscure comic that I think will pay for the entire haul and then some when I sell it. Here's what I picked up, all for $1 each: What If? #18 - Dr. Strange was a disciple of Dormammu Adventure Comics #327, 461 World's Finest #164 Bone Holiday Special Kull #14, 16 Rima #6 The Illustrated Story of Great Explorers Donald Duck Album #2 Superboy #112 Conan #32, 33, 45, 255 Green Lantern / Green Arrow #95, 96, 97, 120 OAAW/Sgt. Rock #265, 291, 292, 299, 300, 301, 306, 330 Wait, these are a buck each?! Okay, you talked me into it! and these keys: X-Men #129 - 1st Kitty Pryde! 1st White Queen! Starslayer #5 - 1st Groo! And something special with them. Take a look! This may not mean much to most of you, but that's the All Detergent variant of Amazing Spider-Man #184, with the All sticker intact. Still amazed I found it. Big scan hidden by spoiler tag:

Just raided a quarter bin and got these for 25 cents each:
Marvel Chillers #1 (1975) Master of Kung-Fu #89 (1980) Moon Knight #2(1980) New Mutants #42-44 (1986) Hex #10 (1986) Classic X-Men #16 (1987), #20 (1988)
Half of them are in pretty rough shape... One or two so bad I might have to throw them out after reading.

Wrapped up my first day at Motor City Comic Con. I picked up a lot of filler issues, but the crown jewel in today's acquisitions was Avengers #8. For some reason, I've always had a fondness for Kang, and obtaining his first appearance was always on my to-do list. Best yet, I got it from a dealer that I really like and respect. It's probably a VG+/F-, and he let me have it for $40.
Just finished reading it, too. I'd read and enjoyed the Marvel Essentials reprint in the past, but reading the real thing was a whole other level of joy. I flipping love vintage comics!

It's also undervalued to begin with given Kang's status as one of the Avengers two most important villains. I've owned three copies of #8, which might be the only book I have upgraded twice. I usually don't upgrade at all, but I do love Kang!
