I went to and made purchases in a phyisical comic book store (unless you count Ollie's) for the first time in more than two years. I was sort of hoping they'd have DC Special #28, which is practically the only Bronze Age Legion of Super-Heroes appearance that I don't have. I'd figured there's virtually no chance of them having it, but they did!! I got this comic when it came out, in my Easter Basket, Easter morning, 1977. Subsequently, I lost it, but the cover and concept of it haunted me for years, until the internet came along and I could search for it. I'm not the biggest Milgrom fan, but what a nice cover! The funny thing is that my memories of the interior included a story which included Calendar Man, with images of all the pages of his calendars whirling around him... but he's not in the actual comic. I guess I got two , and am conflating the two in my memories.

Trump was a beautifully produced magazine, with excellent work, but in it Kurtzman starts to get his tendency to be so close to the object of his parody that it's barely a joke. Also, this collection has parts of the unpublished third issue which would have included this:
I'd consider the Kirby omnibus if I didn;t have most of it in one form or another. I'll just use this opportunity to scream again about publishers claiming "work for hire" on one hand and packaging/marketing reprints on the strength of a creator's name on the other.

Bought on the 13th, shipped the following day, received on the 5th via USPS International Economy + Correos. Second LS order to arrive (on time) out of four; so far one arrived well outside the estimated delivery window and another didn't at all. Not much luck with the post and MyComicShop so far, for what might be the best overall service around: Some more Gruenwalds, I already have about 50, which is roughly a third of his run: basically the last thing he managed to finish before dying. Some reprints for some "key", expensive issues. Some Iron Mans I still recall from way back in the 70's.

For me it has some of Ron Lim's best comic art (maybe tied with his Silver Surfer stuff and Thanos Quest for me), too.

Can't say I'm a fan of Lim's, what I CAN SAY is that Gruenwald made him work for me.

OK, buckle up-- this is a pretty long post. I went to the Russellville, Kentucky Comic Show on Saturday, Oct. 2. The show hasn't been held since Nov. 2019 due to you-know-what. But I ended up coming home with a full short box of stuff-- I didn't buy any major keys because the market for most of those is insane right now. Instead, I bought a huge variety of books (typical for me)-- all types of genres because I simply love them all.
Let me say that I lucked out and was able to pick up some nice high grade copies of several sleeper books, which I'll point out along the way. I also lucked out on Charlton bronze-age stuff... at some pretty sweet prices in bulk deals.
Last, this is only about half the box as I don't want to bore everybody with my oddball space fillers (mainly World's Finest and G.I. Combat "Dollar Comic" issues, as well as a few other misfits). So here we go-- starting with the super hero books. A very late issue of Strange Suspense Stories featuring Captain Atom, a Sand/Superman issue, and a couple of very nice issues of Doom Patrol, including the final issue.
Moving on, we have a very nice copy of Metamorpho (these books are almost always trashed when you find them), the final issue of Hawk & Dove with a classic Gil Kane cover (need only two more issues), Fantasy Masterpieces #5 (only one more needed), and the Wonder Woman one-shot from the DC Special Series.
The final four issues that I needed of Anthro (already had 1 and 6 and the Showcase issue), this completes the run for me. On to the Romance titles-- Mainly Charlton, but there is an early ACG nurse cover thrown in for good measure-- Last of the romance books, and first of the war titles-- beginning with a fairly early issue of Heroic Comics, and a nice silver-age Charlton title... More Charlton war title goodness--- Last of the war titles, including a Russ Heath grey-tone wash cover, a couple other really nice DC books, and an issue of Charlton's Fightin' 5 Onto the Western stuff-- I'm particularly pleased with the first book-- An early copy of Gunsmoke Western featuring Kid Colt-- this book comes in around 7.0 condition, which is pretty incredible for a white-cover Marvel/Atlas book of this age (1961). Also, an issue of Charlton's Billy the Kid, and two super-clean copies of Judge Colt #2 & #4-- Four more issues of Weird Western-- the Scalphunter era. I'm rapidly closing in on completing this run-- about 6 more books to go. Western odds & ends-- including the infamous "Nun with a Gun" issue of Geronimo Jones, two issues of Black Fury, and an issue of Gunhawks to round out the lot. Horror/mystery/sci-fi is up next-- beginning with 4 fun DC books-- including a nice Wrightson cover...
Now, a veritable Charlton mother lode-- I still have a long way to go to complete these runs, but most of these books are in really, really great condition. Last of the Charlton titles, plus an issue of Ripley's--
Miscellaneous horror/sci-fi, including a late Dave Stevens cover-- As far as regular-issue comics go, I'm down to needing about 5 more Stevens covers to have them all. Finally some additions to my collection of suggestive/risque/questionable Archie covers... including an uncommon Andrew Pepoy variant cover for Afterlife with Archie. Thrown in for good measure is a gorgeous copy of the obliquely suggestive Chili #2.

You cleaned up tartanphantom! You sir, have a serious addiction to be proud of. Like you, I buy just about anything that looks good and catches my eye, except my buying tend to be lower grades as my budget has never been as flexible as yours. It's great seeing you share your love for esoteric titles while showing there is so much more to find than just superheroes from the Big Two. There's not an issue you showed that I would turn away or ridicule as I can admit for having many of the same ones already, if only a bit more rough around the edges! Superb spending sir. I congratulate you on your short box of trophies!

Nice pick-ups, Icctrombone and tartanphantom! Lot of really cool stuff in there. I'm on vacation this week and hope to spend at least one day on the comic hunting front. There are a lot of home projects to work on, especially outside, but we're getting rain a couple of days, so I might head indoors to the $1 boxes at the LCS one of them.

Bookery Fantasy, a longstanding comic shop over in Fairborn that also has another game/comic shop across the street and also specializes in pulps, movie posters, and vintage paperbacks posted this week that they were moving several hundred paperbacks over to the $1 clearance section, including a number of Ed McBain books, which is a series I am just starting to explore, so I decided to take a ride over on Saturday and see what they had. I found a bunch, plus picked up three back issues in their new arrivals section. I then went across to the other shop where the dollar vault is located and picked up 11 dollar books. I only got though half the new arrival boxes before I had to leave, there were about 8 more miscellaneous comics longboxes and three longboxes of unsorted Archie books I didn't get to, plus the entire basement dollar vault I never got to, but I still found a few interesting things. So this is the three books I ended up getting in their collectibles side... a pair of issues of Space Usagi, completing the second mini (I still need issues from the first and third series) and one of four (now three) issues I needed from the King run of Flash Gordon those three were $3.95 each minus the 10% discount you get for spending $20. Across the street this is what I got out of the dollar bins-a Halloween themed red dress cover from Betty & Veronica an issue of William Messner-Loebs Journey and the 1/2 issue of Astro City... three issues of Millennium's Doc Savage... a small press 80s Cthulhu mythos comic and the first issues of the Mister E mini... and three issues of the short-lived 80s indy series Silverheels... and as for the vintage paperbacks that drew me there to begin with, this is what I picked up... (I accidentally picked up 2 copies of the same McBain novel, but it was only a buck) here's the ones I get sans the double... I also got a handful of Avenger volumes I needed and a trio of John Jakes novels... a Dashiel Hammett classic and a Shadow novel... I was on a limited budget and had limited time, so not a huge haul. but I knocked a few back issues off my list, added my first red dress cover in months, and got a nice stack of paperbacks to add to my winter reading options. -M

Great grabs there @mrp for comics and books! Plus you scored more than just 1 Red dress issue partner. That Flash Gordon also has a lady sporting a Red dress!! Way to keep that unique collection growing.
