All I know is that I LOVE Cockrum's art, and his wife was the colorist for it. And I really like that fact.

A quick search shows that First and Eclipse were still viable but maybe the best money offer was from Lodestone.

But I think it's awesome that his wife did the coloring for the Futurians.

Actually the Lodestone series was released in 1985, Dark Horse was founded in 1986, so it wasn't there.

Women need to be louder because, apparently, sometimes, when we speak at normal volumes, we either aren't heard, or we're ignored. So, good for her for making a fuss and being loud.

A better choice might have changed the course of history. I never heard of Lodestone till I got those issues in a con for a song. Possibly, but Marvel's standard offer at the time offer included them taking ownership of the characters, which they could have then taken Cockrum off the book if it didn't sell and gave them to another creator, or having them assign a writer and editor who would control the direction of the series and characters not Cockrum. Sure hindsight is 20/20 but there were reasons why Cockrum, who was essentially taken away from the babies he co-created with the X-Men by Marvel was a bit gunshy trusting his new creations with them in a long term relationship. Even the creator-owned titles under the Epic banner were getting editorial flack-Hey Jim Starlin, you need to make Dreadstar look more like a super-hero book so it sells better or we might not be able to keep it going... So he may have turned down Marvel for the ability to tell the story he wanted not the story they were demanding...we'll never know for sure. -M I didn't know that about the Epic line. I read a handful of comics from that imprint at the time, mostly Groo and Elfquest, but if I saw the logo I would check the series out. I always thought they had a huge amount of creative freedom.

I read a handful of comics from that imprint at the time, mostly Groo and Elfquest, but if I saw the logo I would check the series out. I always thought they had a huge amount of creative freedom. Creative freedom as long as sales were good for the most part. A lot of Epic was minis so it was never a big deal, but the few ongoings would have to meet certain sales goals to keep getting published. Starlin was often given the "suggestion" by editorial that Dreadstar would sell better if Dreadstar looked more like a super-hero, hence the costume changes mid-stream. When that didn't work, and sales were plateauing or sinking, Marvel was getting antsier about keeping the book going, Jim took it to First instead, as he got a better deal and guarantees of non-interference. Marvle couldn't tell Jim what to do on Dreadstar, and they didn't own it, but they determined if they would keep publishing it and used that as leverage to make "suggestions" to Starlin. Elfquest was a different animal, it was color reprints of existing b&w material, so Marvel knew what it was getting by then, and Groo is kind of a thing on its own, and by that time the Epic line was a bit more established and certain editors had moved on from Marvel. -M

I grabbed Sandman Mystery Theatre #1 out of the dollar bin, because I've heard good things and Wesley Dodds looks cool.

I'm picking up The Futurians Comic Book at my Comic Book Store and see it myself this upcoming Friday. Sorry about letting this subject continues. I just had to share this news.
