These came in over the weekend-- a couple of nice, tight issues of National Comics from 1947 and 1948... complete with original Granny Gumshoe stories (thanks a lot for "hooking" me, Crimebuster ). My Classics Illustrated collection continues to grow, particularly the "World Around Us" series-- this time with the Railroads issue. A drop-dead gorgeous copy of All-Star Western #4-- I already had this, but this copy is a vast improvement over my "reader" copy. And the Neal Adams cover rocks.
Other fun stuff includes an early issue of "Fear", another issue of the ever-elusive Charlton "Haunted Love", the first appearance of Ditko's "Static" in Charlton Action, and another addition to my Dave Stevens collection, an issue of "Cheval Noir".
Crappy photography still abounds though...

tartanphantom jealous of that Cheval Noir. I am trying to put a run together and that one is proving elusive (and the few I have seen anywhere are a little pricey). Great haul overall. -M

I have been hunting a decently priced copy for awhile... it was one of those synchronistic moments on Ebay-- seller listed it as a 6.0 with a BIN price of $8.99. I discovered it about 10 minutes after he listed it... couldn't hit the BIN button fast enough. Turns out it's more like a 7.5 than a 6.0 copy. Sometimes fickle fate is unusually kind.
I still need a copy of #1 though... I may have to pay the going rate for that one.

I have a #1, which I got for less than cover price, and I am down to needing 8 issues to finish the run, but it's one of those series dealers rarely bring to shows, and lots of shops don't keep in their back issue bins because of lack of demand from the super-hero crowd. I haven't done a lot of searching on ebay for it (I've pretty much stayed off of ebay since I've been out of work except for checking going rate on stuff I am selling for obvious reasons), so haven't run across it there often. -M

Made a stop at the Eisner-nominated comic shop The Laughing Ogre while in Columbus yesterday. It's a great shop, with lots of great displays, well-organized, bright, friendly and welcoming. It has a great stock of new comics and trades-the selection on trades is vast and the variety of genres and material available is incredible. It has a modest back issue section (maybe 40-50 long boxes of stuff plus some wall books, but it is heavy on recent back issues, older stuff was a little sparse. I dropped about $100 there, but a lot of it was on supplies. I found two recent releases (The Good Asian #1 and #2) that had sold out at my lcs that I wanted, and picked up 1 back issue and a pair of trades... They had one issue of the Brubaker Catwoman series that I needed... and I picked up Usagi Yojimbo Saga Vol. 9 and Vol. 2 of the original Eastman and LAird Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (they had vol. 1-3, I had the issues collected in Vol. 1 in the IDW Color Classic singles, so grabbed Vol. 2) I had hoped to get some stuff at the Half Price Books on Lane Ave by the campus of OSU, but when we got there we discovered the shop, and the entire place it was in was now a giant construction pit. Sometime in the year since we had been there, the entire building had been razed. I was sad. There are other HBP in Columbus, but that one because of its vicinity to OSU always had a nice eclectic selection of trades and vinyl that the other stores never matched, and it had the best selection of vintage paperbacks of all the Columbus branches. I'll have to visit the other stores next trip to Columbus and see if any of that eclectic selection has made its way there. We also stopped at a game shop called the Guard Tower on the way home. No comics, but a very well stocked game store. I discovered a potential rabbit hole called Warlock Tiles for use with D&D but so far I have resisted the temptation to jump in that rabbit hole. I did buy three pre-painted minis for use n our upcoming game, the first minis I have bought in a couple of years though. -M

I sure hope you don't have to make a saving throw vs. "overdrawn book of checking"...
+3 to party morale--due to the Paladin's charisma aura, he has everyone in the party feeling confident.

+3 to party morale for living in the moment.
I've been selling off vintage rpg stuff and older painted and unpainted metal minis, plus our overstock of pre-painted plastic minis the last few weeks on an rpg auction FB group to the tune of $200-300 per week since I started, so everything I spent yesterday came out of those funds. If I hadn't been selling that stuff, yesterday's stop at Laughing Ogre would have been purely a window shopping trip. If I do dip into the Warlock tile pool, it will be with that money too. I don't want the main stuff though-no walls, floors, etc. but the accessories, the dungeon dressing, stairwells, etc. would add to my arsenal of goodies to drop on my players... -M

A Father's Day gift from my 31 yr-old son (and my comic collecting buddy)--
He knew that I was looking for a decent copy of Weird War Tales #1, and lo and behold, he gave me a very nice copy last night! Also, although they are not in the "classic" category, he also gave me the first three issues of a new title that he thought I would enjoy, "Geiger".

What a bummer - that was my favorite Half Price to stop at anytime I was in Columbus. I remember seeing a guy there once unloading a big collection of underground comix. I winced at the thought of what they might offer him, given how notorious HPB is at low-balling.
