Take, meaning take what you want for free ? That's so cool. Yes, and I agree!

Years ago in my job, a co-worker brought me a bag full of magazine/comics that his son was throwing out. Among them were Epic Illustrated. One of the books was the first appearance of the Starlin's Metamorphosis Odyssey and another was the first appearance of Dreadstar. There were also other stuff like Heavy metal and some of the Marvel Magazines from the80's. Not bad for free.

Been trying not to accumulate stuff in the past few months, but sometimes one of those deals pops up that you just can't pass up. Case in point, about a week ago a guy was offering the whole set of Planetary on the auction page of the most popular Croatian comic fan site for a very reasonable price: I've been wanting to read more of Ellis' fan-favorite stuff for a while now, and Planetary seems like the most manageable, in that the series lasted less than 30 issues, it's collected in just a few trades, and there's only another trade's worth of ancillary material - which isn't the case for say, the Authority or Transmetropolitan. Another more or less recent purchase (ordered about a month ago, but the usually slow moving international mail means it only arrived this morning) was this wonderful Love & Rockets collection, which has been a priority on my want-list for quite some time now: Almost exactly a year ago, Amor y Cohetes was the topic of discussion on this very thread, as I was complaining that it was OUP and thus impossible to find at at anything resembling a reasonable price. Apparently, though, Fantagraphics reissued it earlier this year, so new copies started to appear again at all of the main bookseller sites. Got mine from Book Depository and even had a 10% discount coupon to boot!

A close contender for the all-time top 10.

Finally!

Five more of my comics from my collection to CGC preservation came back today in the mail. Love this Neal Adams cover for Star*Reach Harold Hedd: Hitler's Cocaine. These were the first underground comics I ever bought. California Comics. Great Ed Watson covers. Can't show you those.... NSFW. Maybe later.

How come when I inadvertently post a cover with some topless women, I get flagged for it, but not someone else like in this case?

Ebay purchase arrived today. Luckily, I got this well under market value. An 8.0-8.5-ish copy for sure, perhaps even slightly higher (even though my photography rates a 2.0). It's the cleanest raw example of this issue that I've ever seen. Posting this mainly for Crimebuster 's benefit, as he is the only other person I know that even collects this "cult" title. And no, it's not going into the Trading Challenge pool.

If I ever had the chance to get issues of this in the wild at a price I could afford, I would, but sadly this is just one of those series I doubt I will ever own, as I have other priorities that would get whatever resources I had to get before I paid the going rate for these. Congrats on the get though. -M

{Spoiler} I absolutely loved Star Reach! I read that issue again just a few weeks ago, oddly enough.

Only found out about this one earlier this year, around the same time as Vicki.....so this set had 7 issues....might get around to it.
Never heard of the publisher Fitzgerald Periodicals...
Also, what was considered 'low distribution' in the 70s? Did these books only go to certain States?

For the first time since last October, I went out and BUYED THE OLD COMIC BOOKSES. All of these are from the $1 boxes at one of my usual haunts. Oddly, I had just gone in looking for a couple of Funko Pops for my younger daughter, but I got sucked into a couple of hours of scouring those boxes (they're unsorted, so it's kind of like looking for a needle in a needle stack to find things that I actually want). Seven more Jonah Hex issues for my collection. Never thought I would enjoy a Western comic, but even when it's bad, it's still pretty decent. I've been picking up the Killraven issues of Amazing Adventures whenever I see them cheap, so I was really happy to find this little bunch of four of them in one of the boxes in the back corner of the store. These are the first issues of Kull I have ever bought, but as I'm reading the first 115 issues of Conan right now, it just kind of felt right, and for a buck, I really couldn't go wrong. I buy any issues of Batman I can find in that general time period. The two issues of Micronauts were bought because of the inclusion of mainstream Marvel characters, but it's not one of my regular books to buy (I have a handful of others, including the ones with Psycho-Man from the teens). It's like ROM in that respect, in that I don't actively seek it out, but if I see a cover that catches my eye, I might buy it.

Those 40c Jonah Hex books are my fave westerns....not that I've read many westerns but I never say no to Jonah Hex. I have the two Showcase Presents collections that have all of the Weird Western Tales stories and the first 25 or so issues of his solo series. I'm not a big B&W comic fan, but the art in those is just stunning and it really hooked me. The stories are almost always interesting, even if for a while it is very much like the old Hulk show where he rolls into town, helps some downtrodden person by becoming the monster, then leaves (although Hex gets PAID, while Banner just hitchhiked his ass down the road like a hobo). I haven't read many of the color versions yet, since I'm particular about not reading a series until I own all of it, but in this situation, I might make an exception. Probably get into it after I finish Conan, as I'm waiting for the next Spider-Man Epic Collection to be released in the fall before continuing that one.
