5. Tom & Lili
Tom Beland & Lili Garcia from True Story Swear to God #1 by Tom Beland Clib's Boy, 2001 I prefer fairy tales to reality, myself. But sometimes a story is both. He describes this lucky series of events, an assignment to Disney World, a Stevie Wonder concert, stars aligning, the world slipping away. A chance meeting, a magical romance. He chronicled this fairy tale romance between a cartoonist from Napa and a radio personality from Puerto Rico, from their meeting to his decision to move to Puerto Rico for their romance. The saga was eventually continued by Image. In real life, Tom and Lily eventually broke up. But in the comics, it's all magic. I think we all know that the secret to happy endings is knowing when to stop telling the story.

5. Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Bernie Rosenthal I almost went with this, as I'm a huge fan of Bernie Rosenthal. But instead, I went with... 5. Captain America and DiamondbackBernie is the perfect match for Steve Rogers. But a lot of Gruenwald's run is about how Steve Rogers is, first and foremost, Captain America. He's always Captain America. There's no down time. There's never a moment where he's not Cap. We see him lose jobs because fighting villains has to come first. Then we see him lose Bernie for the same reason. Then he meets Diamondback. She's a rogue who has the hots for Cap because she's a wild party girl. They are completely mismatched, it seems. But over the course of many years (in the real world, that is), through their interactions Diamondback starts to want to change her ways and become a better person. And Cap starts to think, maybe there's more to her than he realized. Diamondback made a great partner for Captain America - both romantically, and as a superhero - because she was so different. She pushed Cap to think differently in ways none of his other partners (romantically, or superhero!) did or could. I thought they were great together, so it was a bummer when, as soon as Gru left the book, Waid dumped her to bring back Sharon Carter, who had been dead for 15 years. I guess in mainstream comics a return to the status quo is inevitable - and Diamondback was never, ever status quo.

Today's selections really impressed me on how diverse we all. I'm extremely happy to see two Captain America couples. I thought about Bernie Rosenthal as one of my mainstream picks but kept on the roster just in case as a last minute substitute. Mister Spaceman and is selection of Tom & Dhuala Strong was a great pick; totally forgot about the ABC books. Slam_Bradley, thank you for posting Hitman. Odd but fantastic choice.

5. Flash( Wally West ) and Tina Mcgee
The 1987 Flash run starred Wally West who took up the mantle after Barry Allen died in the Crisis on Infinite Earths mini series. This series written by Make Baron chronicled the adventures of the former Kid Flash and it featured realistic characterization for someone his age. He turned 20 and was written with raging hormones. He gets into an affair with a scientist who is a part of a team experimenting on his speed and abilities. The catch is that She's' married ,32 and separated from her husband. Wally walks into his mess and it makes for interesting reading.

Today's Song- "Aniron (theme of Aragon & Arwen)"- by Howard Shore & Enya #5- Cutter and LeetahDouble dipping into the world of the Pinis, my number 5 spot belongs to the main characters of Elfquest. What makes them so compelling, is that these are elves that are worlds apart. Unlike Redlance and Nightfall that I mentioned prior, Cutter and Leetah are from two different tribes of elves. From that first look, it was destined. Is it truly possible that love can be recognized in an instant for two be lifemates? It's something that Richard Pini first shows us in the original run of ElfQuest of destined pairing. You have a brutish and outdoor survivor warrior and leader of his tribe in Cutter and a sun drenched healer of her people in Leetah. The romance that continues throughout the entirety of the the Pinis comic is one for the ages. Children; grandchildren and the bonds of love between the two. It makes for wonderful reading. See I was THIS close to including them.. but then I though, Skywise really makes them a threesome, no? Or not really? Then there's the end, where they sorta leave and go their separate ways (unlike Redlance and Nightfall). In the end I just had to go elsewhere.

I'm surprised this is the first time for this one... Conan and Belit If you read the original story, there's not a whole lot that separate Belit from the others women that waltz in and out of Conan's life, with the exception that she actually dies, rather than Conan getting tired of her. Roy Thomas took that and ran.. stretching what was one story into 3+ years of comics... it's definitely my favorite Conan. Belit is more than a match for him, and you could really feel the electricity of their relationship in every scene they were together. It's too bad they weren't willing to go TOO far off REH, because Belit helping Conan take over Aquilonia would have been amazing. Would they stay together going legitmate? Probably not, but it would be some great stories.

#5 Jennifer Mays and Gabe WebbIn the 1980s, two very popular series that were driven by romance were both detective shows: Remington Steele and Moonlighting (you could also throw in Hart to Hart). They were driven by a "will they, won't they" dynamic, while also have an amateur and a professional. Jump ahead a few years and you have Mike Barr doing his best Ellery Queen, where he introduces us to detective and former government agent Jennifer Mays, proprietor of the Maze Agency. Jennifer is a beautiful blond woman, who runs a detective agency, where she is also the main agent. Think Honey West, for one of the better comparisons. Joining her on some of her cases is crime writer and Jennifer's boyfriend, Gabe Webb. The series features "play fair" mysteries, where you are given the same clues as the detective and attempt to solve it before they do and even had inspiration Ellery Queen appear in a story. Unlike many of these couples, Gabe wasn't the tough one. Jennifer was the butt-kicker, Gabe usually hid from trouble However, Gabe often spots the big clues and works out the details of the crime. Through the series, they are a warm, loving, playful couple. They go out on dates, spend the night together, hang out, go on vacations together, but avoid going beyond the casual , but committed nature of their relationship. They were greatly aided by rookie artist Adam Hughes, who grew by leaps and bounds across the series, until he was forced to abandon it for the workload he accumulated (and the dumptruck of money they backed up to his door) from DC and the art passed in fine, but less stunning artists. Even so, what held the series together were the mature characters that Mike Barr created. Jennifer and Gabe acted like adults, in every sense. They did not need "sex and violence" to give the false aura of maturity. They had the real thing. It was refreshing to see, while just as refreshing to see a capable career woman, who acted realistically.

just got back from a long day, and it's late and I'm tired. . so apologies if I do a disservice to my #5: Destiny & MystiqueClaremont made it very clear they are a couple, tho he hinted around quite a bit about exactly HOW they are a couple (and tho Mystique is a shape shifter, he heavily implied that she morphed into a male for anything physical). but that all went out the window a while back - especially in the current X-men/Krakoa stuff (which I don't read at all. . but have seen lots of images from it, and it's very clear that Mystique and Destiny are/were/are? a lesbian couple. period). and Mystique loves her to the point that she'll destroy everything to get Destiny back. so yeah. . short and sweet. .they're my #5 - and I suspect will show up on others' lists at a higher number?

I'm surprised this is the first time for this one... Conan and BelitBasically my last cut. My final shortlist included many more Spider-Man relationships, this couple, and another I'm surprised we haven't seen but am sure we will. I really appreciate how the comics expanded on their story. The original was just them meeting and then montaged ahead to her death. I appreciated seeing that montage expanded across 50 issues.

I especially liked the great origin story that Roy crafted for Bêlit. It had the classic overtones required for such a character, and was rife with potential.

In the comic, I didn't feel a thing.

I was very tempted to include this couple, but it's one rare instance in which I feel the comics did not live up to the source material. I joked about having an all Conan romance list, but I wound up having none. The main reason-I severely dislike the portrayal of Belit by Roy Thomas and feel it doesn't ring true to the Howard character and is two much a cliched comic book female of the 70s. Thomas reduced her far too often to two things Howard's Belit would have never been a) a damsel in distress and 2) catty. Belit would never have been catty, she would just have killed anyone who got in her way or offended her, and no matter what the peril she faced, she would never have acted helpless as Thomas often had here be. Since Thomas so missed the mark with Belit, the romance never rung true for me and I felt his Belit saga dragged on way too long and left Belit behind far too much. -M

I !ove Belit era of Marvels Conan but not Belit herself so much. For one thing, I dont think John Buscema came up with an especiallygood visual design for the character - physically a little too frail and soft looking, and then that fur swimsuit, which to me looked unattractively thick and heavy, contradictory as that may seem for such a skimpy garment. Her personality never came through to me either in the way I imagine Roy Thomas intended, although it appears to have worked for many readers.
