Random thoughts on Day Seven as we start to pile up the reruns. Ben & Alicia - I think this is the first time we've seen them. This was a late cut from my list. The Thing was, along with Spider-Man, my favorite Marvel character for a long time. Which was a bit odd because I really didn't like the FF at the time. So I do like this beauty and the beast match a fair bit. And Alicia had a huge effect on changing Ben in to a decent character, from a pretty monstrous, almost villain before they started dating. I pretty much choose to disregard anything done with them after the very early 80s because Alicia, in particular, seemed to be very ill-used. Kang and Ravonna - I haven't read those Kang issues in decades. I'm glad they found love though. Deadman (Boston Brand) and Lilly Lang - I've read that book once or twice, but only vaguely remember it. Cool choice. The Badger and Mavis Davis - The Badger was a book that I never read and it seems unlikely at this point that that will change. Zatanna and Batman - I did not know this was a thing. I did come close to using Zatanna, but with John Constantine. Dr. Harleen Quinzel & Pamela Ivy - After my time. Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon - Have we seen them before? Let me just say that I never really liked this match-up. They seemed to work better as super good friends to me. Wally West the Flash and Linda Park - I read the Wally West Flash sporadically, but only vaguely remember them at this point. I'm happy for them though. Lois & Clark - Hawkeye and Mockingbird - Again, I read the first West Coast Avengers mini and maybe the first six issues...but I only have the vaguest memories of them. Apparently it didn't stick. David and Eileen - Crimebuster brings the funk. Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl - I'm beginning to wonder if the Legion wasn't just a dating app.

Random thoughts on Day Seven as we start to pile up the reruns. Zatanna and Batman - I did not know this was a thing. I did come close to using Zatanna, but with John Constantine. It was a reoccurring story line through Paul Dini's run on Detective from roughly 'Tec #821-852 is seriously one of the all time greatest run on a Batman book. It's full of really fun one or two part stories that tend to focus not only on big name villains but also a lot of seldom seen d-listers. I think there was an omnibus collecting it all and his short lived Streets of Gotham book as well that came out not that long ago.

6. Maggie Chascarillo and Ray Dominguez.
I had been planning to place this pair higher but as time went on I had to acknowledge that, as for many L&R readers, it's still the Maggie and Hopey couple that defines the series for me as far as Jaime's work is concerned, so here they go, but ask me a week from now and I might well put them back nearer the top. Because they really are at the heart of Jaime Hernandez's storytelling right now and have been for several years.
Like a few of my other picks, this relationship has been unfolding for many years, and by the time we realise that Ray and Maggie are together it's already a fait accompli. IOW, no big wedding issue for these two, and I think not even a specific moment when they realise they want to make their on again-off again relationship a more permanent kind of thing. The reader looks into their lives at intervals over the years, sees that Ray is still constant if not in his pursuit, then at least in his feelings for Maggie; Maggie is more ambivalent and sometimes they're together, sometimes not. But for the last several years they've come across more and more as an old - well, middle-aged - married couple who have settled down long term. Even Maggie's occasional reunions with Hopie don't seem a threat to their marriage - because that's what it is, for all intents and purposes.
Anyway, this has been and is an important couple in a series that has been a big part of my comics-reading life for many years, so there was no way they weren't going to make an appearance on my list, the only question being, where would they appear. Today it's here at #6.

#6 Jarella and Bruce Banner/Hulk 1970sUnlike the majority of my favorite romance choices, here's a romance that I came upon as an adult, just a few years ago in the hardcover collection Hulk: Heart of the Atom. This volume collects the Hulk-Jarella issues, namely Incredible Hulk #140, #148, #156, #202-203, #205-207, #246-248 and What If? #23. Their romance and its sad outcome, and the Defenders offering unwavering friendship and support to the grieving Hulk, made me cry. A lot. Some bright spots along the way: I love that Bruce/Hulk was finally happy and felt accepted! From Hulk #140 The happy couple from Hulk #205
