It might almost be considered a waste of his talents, but Manara did a series of variant covers/posters of Marvel woman last year... that's just a sample of a few of them. I did pick up the Gamora poster, I just haven't decided where to put it yet. I am tempted by the Wasp and Captain Marvel posters as well... But Moebius has to be my favorite of the European artists. Another I like whose work appears in European comics, specifically Metabarons form Humanoids, is Juan Gimenez even though he is Argentine. Zoran Janjetov and Fred Beltran on Technopriests was also something I liked...cover by Beltran I liked Janjetov better on Techopriest than I did on the Incal stuff he did with Jodo after Moebius. and if you forget the stuff he did on X-Men because Morrison gave him like 3 days to do 22 pages because Grant couldn't make a deadline, Igor Kordey's work is excellent too, like on Secret History... My familiarity with European comics is limited, but I like what I have been exposed to quite a bit. -M

The comic book museum in Brussels has great original art on display. It was odd to see a page of John Romita's Spider-Man (with the Lizard) in between all the European legends. Anyway, here are some of my favorites from my childhood: Michel Vaillant: Michel Vaillant was a fine, fine series in the 70s, and the of the few last comics to deal with a sport more than with adventures. La section R was another example, and since that one was about two sports journalists readers were exposed to many different activities. The idiosyncratic "vroarrrrr" sound made by Jean Graton's cars in Michel Vaillant is still an inside joke for a childhood friend and I (when we talk about our considerably less powerful vehicles!)

I'm of fan of Henk Kuijpers' Franka series One of our European members talked about Franka on the old board and seeing this reminds me that it's something I've been meaning to try. According to wiki, the artwork changed quite a bit from the earlier volumes before it settled into the style we see here - does anyone know at which point in the series that happened? That probably was me. Problem is that I don't think it was translated that much. Artwise probably between issue 6 and 7, storywise, I think around issue 9 it really takes off. Also after issue 7 the art still changes.

What's great is the amount of detail and reference used in each story..it's crazy.

I vaguely remember that name from Heavy Metal but couldn't tell you what for.
Pretty sure it was Dark Horse's excellent Cheval Noir international reprint series.
You have to give Mike Richardson credit; a broad diverse palate he has.
Mike Richardson's great. I think he's the most unsung genius in comics. The comics to movies trend? Largely Mike Richardson building Hollywood connections a decade before anyone else.
He's also a guy everyone seems to like.

I'm of fan of Henk Kuijpers' Franka series BTW, the Lambiek's in the sign above this lady, is Lambiek's in Amsterdam, purported to be the world's oldest comics shop. Anyone interested in the larger scope of comic books, strips, animation, etc would enjoy this I think.
I've never heard of this character / book.
Lambiek's website and Comiclopia
Is it in the Redlight District? If so, I went there in 2009. If not, then there's another great comic shop in Amsterdam!

The Dutch, Belgians, Scandinavians, and French all love their comics. A quick search shows 4 others besides Lambiek and there might be more.
That's an original Giraud page ! Dang !

Well you could get the poster for about $8-9 dollars, not sure what the variant cover issue goes for. Not sure if we still have the poster at our shop, but he was blowing out all posters at $5 last time I was there, which is why I was tempted to pick up more of the Manara posters. My only hesitation is a lack of wall space to put them up... -M

Don't know if those 4 others are still around. The economic downturn also struck here and those lists could be pretty out of date. Then again, Utrecht, which is quite a bit smaller than Amsterdam, has 4 comic shops as well. (Though it's an exception over here. Comic shops here are pretty rare, though many cities have 1.)
