No, the actual Alicia was never a Skrull. The Skrull storyline was subsequent to Byrne and undid things by saying it was never Alicia after all, but a Skrull replacement (who came just as Ben and the other heroes left for the Secret Wars) who ended up falling in love with Johnny. They later recover the actual Alicia who has been imprisoned the whole time by the Skrulls (and then there's a whole bunch of weirdness between Ben/Johnny/Alicia for awhile). Thanks for the info, supercat . I knew someone would know this. That I was really just trying to be ironic/ sarcastic/ satirical with those suggestions only proves how comics, like politics, have essentially killed all irony, sarcasm and satire. PS: Welcome to CCF, and keep up the great comments. I've enjoyed all of the ones I've seen! Gotcha, and thanks for the encouragement!

Same here, but as Byrne was writing both Fantastic Four and the Thing, we got the Johnny-Alicia thing on Earth and Ben finding a new girlfriend (Tarianna) in space. (That one wasn't a Skrull, but turned out to be a psychic construct modeled on Grimm's "ideal" woman, who coincidentally had the same body as Sharon Ventura, the lady who eventually got to be his real girlfriend on Earth and eventually turned into the new Thing. Because continuity can never be messy enough!) And people say Dickens is tough to follow.... Not that I really want to parse this too finely, but wouldn't Alicia have been Ben's perfect woman, or did Tarianna have Sharon Ventura's body and Alicia's intellect? Or, if I can go by everything I've read about Byrne's notorious Big Barda-Superman story, was Ben's blow-up doll, er, fembot, er "psychic construct" just his perfect physical woman? I'd agree that Ben's ideal woman should have been Alicia, although I doubt that in the real world there is such a thing as one single ideal partner for anyone (or rather a single ideal set of qualities found in an individual). Relationships are very much about growing together, and I doubt any kind of machine could craft an ideal partner just on a supervillain's say-so. My guess is that Byrne wanted to shake things up romantically, and perhaps introduce in Ben's mind the idea that Alicia might not be the sole woman for him, thus paving the way for his not killing Johnny when he found out he had been replaced in his lady-love's heart. I don't know. It was really just soap opera stuff, happening because the writer said so.

In the 1960's - Ben: Alicia, I'm not good enough for you. Alicia: Don't say that Ben dearest!
In the 1970's - Ben: Alicia, I'm still not good enough for you. Alicia: Don't say that Ben dearest!
In the 1980's - Ben: I love Alicia so much I'm never coming back. Byrne/Retcon Skrull Alicia: Johnny! Real Alicia: Seriously? It wasn't enough for Byrne to have Annihilus brutally almost kill me, he breaks up my relationship with Ben, tries to hook me up with Sue's little brother, and then it turns out I was actually a prisoner of the Skrulls. Sculpt THIS Marvel!

^^ This kind of stuff is why some fans insist NOTHING counts in Spider-Man after Steve Ditko.

wanted to shake things up romantically Isn't that what Roy Thomas said to John Romita, " Why don't we KILL OFF one of the regular cast members" in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ?

I don't remember when exactly Reed was replaced by a Skrull during Secret Invasion, but it could be that both he and Alicia were Skrulls at the same time for a while!
I can't wait for future storylines to reveal that during that time, Sue was actually a doombot, Franklin was a clone and Johnny was in fact Proty. (Oops... wrong company).

Let us not forget that the Skrull gave birth to an egg.

Let us not forget that the Skrull gave birth to an egg. Namor getting a bit "handsy" there. Hated that stupid ponytail! Stupid 90s!

Not to mention Sue empowering females everywhere by basically wearing a swimsuit as a costume. On the other hand, Ant Man's costume has rarely looked better. I'm planning on hitting up 70s FF after finishing Fraction's 2012-14 run, but man, that DeFalco run keeps calling my name...

It was actually one of the last runs I collected before I quit reading superhero comics. I didn't get to the end, though. One thing I remember about it vividly was the amount of effort they put into trying to boost sales on the book. There were all sorts of special covers and numerous guest appearances.

I continue reading FF after Byrne left but only for a little while. I did see the wedding, but missed the Skrull stuff. Unlike Byrne's run which I've read over and over, the following issues only got read once and I no longer own them, so I don't remember how the wedding went down at all. Considering how long Ben and Alicia were together, it probably happened too quickly.
Though I'm aware of the Skrull thing I try to ignore it and consign it to the fuzzy dustbin of other crazy, ill-advised stuff that's happened in comics.

I don't mind swimsuits as superhero costumes but for this particular character it doesn't work, especially as the specific design seemed intended strictly for shock effect.

Moreover, I don't think her power extends to making her stretch marks invisible, and yet ...

Sue altered the costume when the entity that was inhabiting her left. It wasn’t a swimsuit anymore.
